In games, there's a golden rule about this. It's called "don't include anything that doesn't add to the game".

Ok I made that up, there is no golden rule. But it's called common sense. If there's no reason for there to be magic, then why include it? The game worked fine anyway.

The only item that required any sort of "magic" ammo was the lantern. So we got the lantern oil. Other than that, there were no magic items that needed a magic meter. Including ice and fire arrows for the sake of just including them would've been stupid. We have enough useless items as it is.

Oh, and "number one Zelda" didn't even have magic. It was introduced in AoL.

Re: Magic

What this game was REALLY missing that I enjoyed from OoT was the use of magical instruments. It's fun changing day into night and affecting other details of the game with the instruments. I hated waiting for the sun to rise and set in TP.

Re: Magic

I agree with that, I enjoy watching the sunrise but it was a total pain waiting for night and then for dawn - even though I want the days to be long. Still, they should give us an equivalent to the "Sun's song" in every game that uses the day/night cycle, unless the cycle is crucial for some puzzles.

Actually, there is a quote which could be used here -

"A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." - Antoine de Saint-Expury

You forget the Magic Armor, but your point is still equally as valid.

And not only was magic introduced in AoL, magic has actually only been in 5 out of 14 Zelda games.

The main use of each item its to make everything easier when fighting an enemy.

Haha! Yes, I got it on my first playthrough to try it out but quickly forgot about it. I don't understand why they included it. They could've removed the dependency of Rupees and they could've made Link slower in battle or simply disable certain moves or something like that to even things out.

Of course, every zelda has some form of magic, but this thread is discussing the lack of magic meter in TP. Or, at least, that's what I understand it to mean.

Re: Magic

Sometimes I wonder that there should be no use of magic in Zelda at all. But it sounds kind of silly actually.

They did TP well without any magic.

Re: Magic

They did do tp well with out magic, but if they had put magic in it I would of liked it a whole lot better. I would of said tp is better than Oot, but too bad no magic

Re: Magic

I think that magic would have been ok-only when needed. TP didn't need it.

Re: Magic

You all seem to be forgetting that as Wolf Link, you used Midna's magic sometimes. (but still no magic meter )

Re: Magic

On the back of TP's boxcover there is a picture of Link doing the Jump Strike and a magic meter...Also in some versions of TP if a Blue and Yellow Chuchu mix they make a green chuchu...if you scoop the green jelly it'll give you no definition...and the jelly doesn't do anything. xD

Nintendo obviously was going to have magic in TP. I bet it could've been used for Link's hidden skills, spin attack and maybe even Midna's magic too. Perhaps they decided to drop the magic meter because it would cause too many problems...pretty much, TP has magic without the magic meter...Link/Midna have no limits.

I noticed this before the game came out on the official zelda website in the screenshots section of the TP page.

When i first saw this i was excited to see that magic had made it into the new game but upon completion of the game i was confused, i thought that i may have done something wrong, or completely missed something, but i hadnt it just wasnt there.
Nintendo must have initially wanted to have magic in the game but something obviously changed their mind between when they started on the game and the release date.
It was originally intended to have magic in the game but they took it out because it wasn unnesescery to have it in the game. They obviously replaced the firearrows with the ball'n'chain that to me is more enjoyable than firearrows. And in no point of the game was there any indication of the need of icearrows so having only one of them would be unbalanced. And like in TWW Zelda was the one handling the Lightarrows in the bossfight so there was no need for them either. To me it seemed much nicer to have a more ralistic wiev in the lantern having to use oil instead of magic. And there are other games where there are no magic either and they are nice. There is no magic in TMC or PH either so it seems the new Zeldas have atleast for now passed beyond the magic usage.

Like I was saying earlier, only around one third of the games have a magic meter - 5 of 14, to be exact.

Re: Magic

I don't mind the lack of magic so much. It was already similar enough to OoT
