Symbolism in Zelda
Do you have any instances of symbolism in Zelda? I have a few.
Post easter eggs, little secrets, stuff like that. My first one: TP is really religious! In the Yeti Mansion, there's a big chapel you fight monsters in. There are pews and an altar. In Hyrule Castle, there's lots of religious undertones. The throne room seems to double as a church. There's an altar to the goddesses. In kakiriko village, there's a temple. Any other instances of symbolism? |

To add to that, and not to be crude, the four statues surrounding Stone Tower Temple are somewhat phallic. I finally realized that after I read that Majora's Mask article on the homepage of ZU.

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
That one cut scene in TP in which Lanayru warns Link about the corruptive power of the fused shadows. Link and Ilia are both humans who are supposed to live in harmony. Ilia's dagger and blank eyes represent the conflict among people. When Link runs for the triforce, dark Links spread up around it, suggesting that darkness claimed to have power. The fused shadows surround the triforce like a fortress. Link's good side is destroyed by his bad side who chose to join the dark Links for power. The evil Links get punished for their sins. Another thing, Dark Link is an evil version of Link which would make him a symbol of humans fighting against humans. I think the falling Ilias are a symbol for insanity. Those are just my thoughts.

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
I wasn't too crazy about the falling Illias but that still was one of my fave cutscenes with the symbolism pertaining to the ever popular Dark Link. With cutscenes in TP I still like the Master Sword one as it was so King Arthur and English cultural patriotism and all that good symbolic stuff.
Valhelm mentioned the church altar in the Snowpeak mansion and the only one I can think at the moment similar to that is the sculptured reliefs on the walls of the Temple of Time

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
Wind Waker had some less than vague allegory going on.
In the game, Hyrule was a representation of Heaven - a mythical place of paradise and promise. Ganondorf played the part of Lucifer - a being who coveted said paradise so much that they would seek to claim it as their own, only to be cast down by the powers that be. With that in mind, Ganondorf's form as a serpent can be seen as more than the something done for aesthetic appeal. It's a stretch to call Link and Tetra the representatives for Adam and Eve, but with many skips and bounds through the land of logic, such an association wouldn't be considered too absurd.

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
The Triforce is the crest of the Hojo clan in feudal Japan, and coincidentally the logo of Delta power tools.

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
I think Yeto and Yeta are suppose to be based off the Abominable Snowman myth in the Himalayas. That creature is supposed to be a Yeti anyway. Did anyone know this? I didn't until fairly recently actually.

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
i think everyone has heard of the abominable snowman. and its no myth, its true he exists. we had a very nice convosation about snow over snow cones and ice tea.
Mentioned earlier about the yeti's living in that chapel thing, i think they may have moved in while it was abandoned or something, i doubt that they are religeous themselves

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
Yeah, I've heard of it too, I just didn't know it was a Yeti.

Re: Symbolism in Zelda
Doesn't FD Link have a triangle and a crescent moon on his chest? I'm pretty sure that they're the symbols. Also, FD Link wears white while Majora's Mask, as well as the place where it is fought, are colorful. So the triangle represents the triforce (Link is associated with it) the crescent moon represents the order of the moon phases (Majora disrupted this by making the moon fall) and the white clothing is to contrast Majora's colors. I don't know what the helix sword is, but it looks cool.
