Zelda Wiki

This thread is discussing the website which can be found here. This is an awesome website which contains heaps of information about every main part right down to every miniscule part of anything in the Legend of Zelda Series, and beyond. So if you don't know what it is, please check it out. It is a valuable resource for research, theorising or just general reading. It is a wiki that anyone can edit, and write articles on, and is run by the webmasters of the main zelda sites, including ZU'ers such as Scott, and our Jason I believe is actually the founder/ webmaster of it.

Now, the point of the thread is for me to ask this. Do you think it is worth making an account, to help edit and write articles about Zelda? and is it hard? Meaning is it hard to edit and change pages as well as write, or relatively easy? Is there anyone who knows what it's like from experience? What should I know before I make an account? Because I'm considering making an account and want some imput. I'll PM Jason to put his opinion in the thread, but everyone elses is also appreciated. Also you can use this thread to discuss the site as well, if you please, but firstly can we focus on the main questions?

Uh, it's TOTALLY worth making an account and editing, and I don't say that just 'cause I founded the place >.>... anyways, I approve of this thread! Because the wiki needs some good lovin' on ZU at the moment.

I've always found MediaWiki, the software that runs the wiki, to be incredibly easy to use and easy to learn. One of the things I like about it: I can figure it out with no trouble. But all that aside, the wiki is missing a lot of information and needs a jolt of activity right now - especially since things are going on behind the scenes with plans to make the wiki better! I'd say now's a good time to join up and start contributing, since we're about to make it much more collaborative-y.

And we're missing a lot of Zelda info, so adding that isn't bad either.

Yes, I highly support the website, and visit constantly.

I even made a page for Darknut King (DK) ^_^

I'll be sure to look around and update soon.

Well. I've been pondering it for a while now, and with that I think I'm definately going to join. I'm just wondering if you'se know of a instructions like page to using MediaWiki. I mean, I should be able to pick it up pretty easily, but just for beginnings. Wikipedia's got this page HERE to explain how to edit pages using MediaWiki, but just wondering if you guys, or anyone else for that matter knows a place of in-depth instructions. For general use, editing, creating new articles, pictures etc: I assume that the Wikipedia instructions would be rather similar anyways. Thanks guys...

I just found some pages at ZW answering what I wanted, I wasn't able to find them before, but, well, I've found them now, and one of them is actually a copy of the Wikipedia page I linked to, so, it's all good...

What sorta things are they needing done? I checked out the 'wanted pages'. But since I didn't sign up I got an error page.

Anyhow, I'm interested in helping. I don't think I have any resources that aren't common to an American LoZ fan. So.......what could I do?

Do anything necessary to make something better. If you want to make an account, go ahead, there's nothing stopping you.

I am a current co-owner of the Zelda Wiki, so if that somehow means anything to answering your question then I am glad to be of help.

There is actually quite a bit of stuff that needs to be done, and it doesn't all require some vast unforeseen knowledge level of all aspects of Zelda. In fact, most of the stuff is based purely off common english sources. While some things delve deeper including Japanese translations, those are few and far between. Thats one of several. Well over 50+ pages still need to be created. That doesn't even include all the pages that need to be reworked, which can be found here: Category:Articles needing attention - Zelda Wiki.org

The wiki stuff, in general, is easy to learn. Most of the formatting questions are easily answered by looking at similar pages, and copy pasting the format. After sometime, it will become natural. In the end, there is a lot everyone can do for the Wiki, and while us owners are indeed working hard on improving the place... we can't do it alone. We need the help and support of anyone interested.

Zelda Wiki is a fairly good resource, and as Jason said we have a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes to make the ZW not only look better (in terms of formatting), but making things easier to find as well. The Wiki is a project that is truly all about the fans. You all adding and building the pages is up is what makes the place truly tick.

I have now joined the Wiki, under my internet alias Melchizedek, if anyones wanting to know who I am at the wiki... I just edited the article 'The Carnival of Time' then, as my first thing, and I must say...easy....I didn't think it would be so easy, but it was, and now I'm pumped up to help the wiki with any Zelda knowledge I can remember... I've got to work on my user page now...

I do have one question, that hopefully you Jason, Nathan or someone can Link me to an answer. Is there a page at the wiki where I can put some ideas I have for the wiki so that other users can discuss whether they are good ideas? Because I've got a few ideas...

Could we get a banner or sig addon to promote it and ourselves as an editor/writer on it for this site? Or would this site forbid that? It seems like a good idea.

I just made the Four Swords Character list. I'd like to add pictures and stuff like that. Anyhow, Could one of the experienced wikiwriters give me a review or something so I'd know how well I'm doing?

That's great that you joined! It's fun isn't it...

Regarding the sig banner. If you look on the left hand side of the wiki, it has a list of the Zelda sites that support it, and ZU is one of them. So I'd think ZU wouldn't mind that, though you'd probably want to check with Jason. If you could get someone to make a banner in the sig shops, using the ZeldaWiki logo, and saying something like. "ZeldaWiki Contrinutor", and clicking on it links to the site, I for one would be proud to put it in my sig. So if you go through with it, please notify me...

No problem. Adds you to buddy list too. Incase you're wondering, at the Wiki, I'm under the name Melchizedek...

My quick advice to you, would just be that when you're creating new articles, such as character lists, check out the lists from other games, so that they are in a similar format. Also don't be shy, if you screw up you can undo your changes, re-edit or a sysop will fix it up. And most importantly, have fun...

Also, check your user talk page...

In case anyone's sitting on the fence about whether or not to join. I'll say it's more fun and challenging (mildly) than I thought it would be. A quik poke around the site would reveal that games like TP and OoT have been heavily worked on. There's scant information on the lesser known titles. Such as Tingles games, the NES ones, and GBs.

The easiest way to format like Melchizedek says is to view other pages and do what they did. Saves you from getting your work butchered much xD. So far all of the edits done to my writing has been for the better.

No problem. A delayed response is better than no response. Thanks for the link, I will discuss my ideas there. don't thank me, for the support, thank Jason for founding the wiki, because I enjoy contributing... But yeah, thanks... I've gotta actually edit the wiki now, I've been working my user page HERE for a while, but I think it is finished now.

This threads been good. Me and Axiomist have joined the wiki out of it, so it was worth it. I'm at the wiki, more than ZU these days...

Bump for banner opportunities.

I recently joined ZW and would like to say it is a great Zelda related site. It needs work, but that's what we are here for.

I would highly recommend any Zelda fan to register or at least edit some pages.

Anyone can do it, especially with the aid of the "help" link on the site.

Also, Jason, Mjr162006, Melchizedek, and Nathan are all frequent editors of ZW that are also present hear on ZU, they can offer you help, don't be afraid to ask!

The Zelda Wiki.org Contributor banner is available. There will be a thread for it.

... That banner looks very nice. I am SO jealous! Well... I just gotta start editing more.

Though I'm having a hard time, I'm not as experienced and knowledgeable as most about Zelda games... but I do what I can. I wish I could do more though.

Ahh. This brings back memories of my n00bieness back in April. I've come a long way at the wiki since this hesitant to join thread. I like the above peeps encourage everyone to join and help out in some way.

As for the Contributor banners, they are available to dedicated wiki contributors with proof of over 1,000 edits. Just speak to the almighty Jason.

The sad thing about digging up this thread, is good old Axiomist. This thread encouraged him to join the wiki, but he's gone all inactive.
