Majora transforming masks are dead people, so whose...-spoilers-

the deku sprout in the beginning is the butlers son, the goron is a creepy ghost and the zora is fishfood. What about Fierce Deity?

People suspect there once was a "Fierce Deity" whose spirit was sealed in a mask, similar to how Majora was.

So was Fierce Deity's Mask made when Majora's Mask was made just in case something went wrong with the controlling power and the Fierce Deity Mask is able to neutralize it?

I like the theory of this.

Kaepora the owl spoke of the land's guardian deity when he taught you the down left up song. Keeping with the parallel dimension theories: As Link was the defender of Hyrule, FD was the same for Termina.

Obviously, he died. Of all the theories I heard of how he died, I like this one the most:
A long time ago, the moon had decended upon Termina before. He sacrificed his life to stop it/or whatever evil entity that had caused it to fall.
But yeah, he died to protect the world, and where he fell, from his life-force, up sprang a giant world-tree. So yeah, that little theory would have him croking on the moon, which is a little far-fetched, but I like it anyways.

From that, you could say he was the one who originally felled Majora, turning it into a mask (a battle on the moon, mayhaps?). . .

So why is it that when you receive the mask, the game asks you something along the lines of "could it be just as evil as Majora's Mask" ?
Seems a strange question to ask about a guardian of the land

Mainly because power corrupts, corrupt people are seen as evil.

I think Link himself would know better than to sence evil from a mask just because it's powerful

Strange indeed. I saw a pic with the full quote: "Can this masks dark powers be as bad as Majora's?"

Ewww. For closure on the theory, one must assume that the quote is nothing more than a red herring designed to keep the player guessing.

Or you can look at FD the Guardian at another angle: How far did he go to obtain power to protect the land? Did he sell his soul?

In Japan, FD was called Oni Link. And as you all know, 'Oni' - means demon. So maybe he sold his soul to a demon, gained its powers, saved the world, and when he died, his essence, the good and the bad transferred into the mask/tree.

Or it could be pure evil.
I'll never admit that though, I still love that Guardian Hero theory.

Well, actually Onis are like demons, they were once good though, and fell victim to a lust for power, and became corrupt. So perhaps F.D. did save Termina, but then used his power for evil, and was sealed in mask form...

I don't recall any quote from Kaepora about a guardian of Termina (and he probably didn't mean the FD anyway), so all that's known of the Fierce Deity is that he's not an actual person. The mask never comes to life, and there is no mention of any Fierce Deity in the entire game (only the mask via gossip stone). The mask is completely optional, and the ending does not change if you have it or use it. Seeing as how Majora's Mask gives you the FDM (which is unreasonably idiotic), and that the FDM is supposedly more evil than Majora's Mask, I doubt that it actually ties into the story, seeing as how it would completely overshadow the title mask.

Seriously, if there was some god that lived in Termina before the Four Giants and was more evil than Majora's Mask, I doubt that they would be forgotten. Heck, they would probably wipe Termina off the map long before the Four Giants came. That would be a critical part of Termina's history, and would also help the game be more in-depth. Furthermore, how would Majora's Mask get the mask, and why would Majora's Mask give it to you?

Also, in the Japanese version, the FDM/MM thing was like a game of tag, meaning that the FD isn't necessarily a god (demon at best), and could just be some gift so you can play the "game." Regardless, the FDM being canon makes Majora's Mask the dumbest Zelda villain, and Link would have to be less intelligent than Majora's Mask to try it on. I doubt that the FDM is relevant to the plot, if even canon.
