The Romance Thread IV: The Debate Continues

I think that the reasoning for so many people choosing Zelda just isn't justified. Just because Link goes and saves her doesn't automatically mean that they are in love. For example, in Oot Zelda puts on a more-or-less 'business' apparatus, and is more interested in saving the world than interested in Link (which is understandable, but still). For example, in the end she makes Link go back in time to re-live his life where if she was in love with Link she would have clasped his hand and skipped down the heavenly staircase from cloudland and rebuild Hyrule together.

As far as I know the only confirmed interest that a girl has shown in Link is Princess Ruto's, and that is something we all wish never happened, as Ruto is a fish humanoid and in my opinion, heros and fish humanoids don't go to well together.

Well, I still believe...Ilia is the best choice for Link in TP

Maybe in your world, but this is Hyrule we are talking about in the Zelda Universe.

I like the Idea of Ruto and Link.

First off: for a bit of mod business: I've noticed a decent amount of posts that contain: " OoT: this girl, MM: this girl " and such. People, explain your choices/thoughts or it's just spam. Now carrying on...*takes mod hat off*

Agreed. Link saving Zelda cannot be taken as evidence that he loves her. BUT, his reactions to her kidnapping can be, among other things. I'm speaking of OoT obviously, and there's other small hints that convey more interest than pure business:
Ruto: " And you..you are searching for the Princess, Zelda? Hah! you can't hide anything from me!"
( this implies she uncovered the secret about his feelings...and he reacted in a way she could see. )

later...Impa: "..There's nothing to worry about. The Princess is safe now. Soon enough you will meet her..." blah blah etc.
( he's obviously worried about Zelda: and likely asked about her or showed his concern visibly. )

In terms of romance in general with Zelda games: It's never outright said, but when it comes to romance, IMO, the Zelda games are all about subtlety. Hints from other NPC's, Link's reactions etc, I feel are the more accurate pointers to how HE may feel personally. In terms of how the game treats a romantic possibility: the more openly suggested ( verbalized ) it is about possible romance between Link and another character in game..the less I take it seriously. That's because the dev's will never outright tell us how Link feels about someone, or that he seriously WILL end up with someone. If that happened, we would no longer "be Link", as we would lose the choice. There's always question..though I still feel hints exist to how Link feels, they just aren't open.
In some cases, like with TP's Ilia, is it ever outright said: "Link, want to marry Ilia"? yet it seems obvious by his actions/reactions nonetheless. Same goes with OoT and Zelda, IMO.

And in terms of Zelda sending Link back: She always does the right thing, regardless of her personal feelings. It's part of her character. She sent him back to make things up to him...not because she didn't necessarily feel anything for him. In fact, she seemed pretty upset at doing it.

In TP, some of you say that Zelda isn't best for Link because they have no time to bond. What about after the events of the game? I'm sure Link and Zelda spent a lot of time together. After all, they do seem to like each other.

I don't see any real reason for them to spend enough time to get intimate with each other.

I saw a comic once where Ruto came in with a kid that looked like a blue skinned Link with yellow hair, a fish tail coming from his rear. He said "Daddy!"

And then Link woke up screaming. It was funny stuff.

Yes, he saved Hyrule and Midna, as well as the Twilight Realm. He met Zelda twice, and had a brief battle with her on Epona. They probably became friends, but why would Link start spending a lot of time at the castle? He's closer to Malo and Talo than he is with Zelda.

Once again, nicely said. If you read the manga, he gets really emo and whatnot for a short amount of time after Ganondorf kidnaps Zelda right before his eyes in the Desert Colossus. (I know that the manga isnt official Nintendo canon, but it is approved by them. And they really dive deeper into Link's character than the game ever does.)

I recall reading somewhere that the purpose of the manga IS to deepen the storyline and characters. While it does deviate in some areas: for instance Sheik is portrayed to be different than Zelda, where in game I don't see the difference...I would think the purpose of the developers overseeing it is to ensure "the spirit" of the game is maintained, which I believe happened.

Why would he? Because he can no longer fit in anywhere else. It's dependant on the "feeling" you get at the end...but the last shots of Ordon I felt were disjointed..how on earth could Link ever reassimilate into such an idyllic naive lifestyle again? I thought Ordon echoed the Kokiri Forest in a brilliant way...innocence and beginnings...Link knew nothing before it, and nothing of the outside world. But now that life is back to normal for everyone but him...I can see him seeking wisdom from Zelda. She alone can identify with his plight.
Whether romance will happen or not..the possibility is there, but IMO, not focused on like it was in OoT/MM. Otherwise, I can imagine him seeking to furthur aid Hyrule or take off on another journey to get his head on straight..like LA or MM.

I really don't know. I do believe that Nintendo has Link portrayed as someone who doesn't just slide back into his old life. Like you said, LA and MM happened. They happened because he was restless. I don't think he'd stay in Ordon, but I don't know if he'd be drawn to Zelda. If it were me, I'd probably join up with Telma's group and spend time with them, more than I'd try to find time with Zelda.

I agree with you. Link seems to be the type that, once he went on a major quest, he would have to do something productive and very physical--like join the Hyrulean Army, or become Captain of the Knights of Hyrule, like he does in my fanfic! XD

Now i dont agree with you. ZeLink is my top OTP and thats that. I respect other opinions, dont get me wrong, but I love Link and Zelda together. Just love it. Just read the OoT manga. But i could see him joining Telma's group and working with them for a time.

but thats just me.

oh, and i watched that video thats link'd in your siggy and i laughed my butt off! I love all the "OOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooOOOOOOOO"'s! and i loved the subs! (Obviously) rolf

I just read the Oot manga for the first time and I thought is was awesome! except for the cussing. And when Zelda sends Link back to his own time, she says she LOVES HIM!!! And he was about to tell her the same thing. Of coarse these comics aren't official, but i still love them. If you haven't read them yet, i encourage you to do so.

The OoT manga is an art work that needs to be translated and officially brought over to the states. End of story.

I didnt mind the swearing because, for the most part, it was used tastefully, rather than just putting it in there for fun. Link is definitely justified in his use of damn.

Actually, There is a website that has it translated perfectly. I can't remember what the site was called, but i found it by googleing zelda manga. They also have the manga of other zelda games, like MM and TMC.

P.S., the links to the comics on this website don't work...
