Why'd they make them goddesses?

I've always wondered why they made all three women. I mean why didnt they make one of them a guy? Did Nintendo ever release a reason? And just a little side question...is there any orgin of where the names came from?

Well thats pretty much my question....discuss at your will.

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

I'm not sure really. Perhaps nintendo Just couldn't think of a guy. But all the same their names where made so Because nintendo wanted them to be so. I'm sure there is a more in-depth reason in the games, But I have no recollection upon what that would be. Perhaps we should Discuss this further.

Maybe it was to make up for the lack of female main characters. I mean beside Zelda there arn't many more.

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

If I recall they never stated why they were women. I mean c'mon whenever you go one of the fairy fountains in Oot do you know how creepy that would have been to have a male fairy come bursting out of the water? hahaha, I think Nintendo used women because they would appeal to the main gaming community which is men. (Ladies please dont get mad just stating a fact) =)

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

I think it could also mean that if there was a dude there. it'd sound a bit weird.
The goddesses are meant to be played by a female sort of role, purely because of some of the stuff that the godesses do. THey're peacefull people, and having a man in with that really wouldn't mix

You are thinking of the Great Fairies. This discussion is of the godesses: Din, Nayru, and Farore.

Once again, this is discussion of the godesses, not sages. Also, Malon is not a sage.

My opinion-who cares? Does it matter? They are godesses. They were made godesses. They will always be goddesses. Feminine goddesses. And they will always stay that way. Who cares if they are female or not? That's how Nintendo made them, and that's how they will stay. I don't think I want any transvestite godesses...

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

Having female goddesses creates a more majestic creation story. If a male god created Hyrule, it would probably be a crude story with him molding the planet out of nothing. With females, it gives the sense that they are mothers. They brought Hyrule into existance as a woman brings a child. So rather than making hyrule, it has the sense that they gave birth to it, which in turn makes the land seem more majestic.

I don't know...it seems that it fits the story better. And anyway, the main boss is a guy, so I guess it evens out.

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

Women are always the creators in many cultures. They represent pureness, wisdom, motherhood, protection, etc. Men represent strenght, pride, power. I think it fits better with women.

By the way, if someone says FEMALE GODESSES, I'm gonna get real mad.

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

I've personally never thought why Hyrule had three goddesses. I think it's just that they didn't want gods because of america's thing about religion and games so they decided on having three goddesses to keep america from raising an unholy racket about how a single god is so similar to it's religion. Or they could have decided for three goddesses on nothing more than a whim.

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

I think it was to avoid being sexist. They needed some strong female characters.

The original game was prety sexist. Link's mission is to save a helpless female.

Re: Why'd they make them goddesses?

Mother nature, father time. I think that applies here. Women tend to make things, at least in mythology, that are beautiful and tender. Hyrule and the world could be considered to be both, as there is life within the realms of Hyrule. Furthermore, I also feel that men are more on the arrogant side, and as such, it would only require one man, to make a bad Hyrule. Destroying the Triforce theory, so it's almost like it's important for them to be at least three, and using the stereotypes of men and women, it makes sense.

Also the fact that the majority of the gaming audience, is men/boys and back then was even more so, it makes sense to add as many women as possible -- even if they are Goddesses.

Quoted for emphasis, because it's just so damn true.
