Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
Hehe, this was unfortunaly the wrong forum, mate. No worries, I will move it over to where it belongs - the zelda section.
*moves* And no, I have no idea of what swordmaship it is based on, not my major... ![]()

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
Its mainly medieval, more towards the end of the dark ages, there is very little samourai influence, maybe the forward leap attack. Other than that, the fact that he fights with a shield has much influence on his techniques

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
It's probably based more on ease for the gamer than any real style. I'm by no means an expert, but I shouldn't think any style of sword fighting involves merely poking your sword forwards, as in LoZ. And if you've ever tried to jump above the enemies head and land with your sword pointing down underneath you, as in AoL, you'll find it's not easy.

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
^ I think so too. Though the developers put a lot of efford in the Zelda series, I don't think they have made Link's style look like a real fighting style.
And about being brief, you don't have , but you have to make yourself clear (like you did). If you need a whole page for that, take one. In some places on this forum, you aren't allowed to post a message shorter that x phrases (like in some interactive stories - you have to in the Nayru one).

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
Thanks everyone for your input. I think there's a lot of helpful people in this community. I am a big fan of swordsplay in general, whether it is eastern or western styles. My question came more out of a thought i had about to make a detailed analysis of merging different swordplay styles and decided to pick one with a fictional backdrop and by watching TP's new trailer, i think Link's is a good start. Thanks for your time in hearing me out.

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
I dunno if you'll read this mqcangri, but I'll put my two cents in anyway. And yes, I can speak from experience as I've been fencing for over ten years and have done more research than any sane person should into swordplay.
Link's style probably isn't based on anything historical, as was said before. It's just there to look somewhat believeable and at the same time fancy. However, that doesn't make it invalid. For example, spinning around and swinging like he does in the Twilight Princess trailer is a pretty common move, usually used with long, heavy weapons when hacking through someone's flesh/armor. As for his actual gear, it's actually very European. The two-edged sword is the staple of medieval weapons in Europe, though they did exist for a while in China. Shields of that shape are also European, Link's being a "heater" shield. Using a sword and shield together went out in Europe pretty quickly, as spears and axes were easier to make, mass-produce, and use. Well I hope that helps. For a random fun fact, remember Biggororn's sword from OoT? Two-handed swords like that weren't often used as "swords" at all. Only the top 1/3 of the blade was sharpened, and it was used to cut enemy spears and lances in half. At close range, the wielder would grab the handle and the unsharpened part of the blade and use it like a little spear.

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
Well, is hacking and wacking a fighting style? I'd assume it is just fighting, doesn't seem to be much of a disiplen (sp, I know) to his style. Mostly just hack the opponent to shreds.

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
Link has to have some sort of discipline to his fighting, or else he'd be toast. He has to know how to actually use the sword, meaning the proper way to attack (you have to make sure that you hit the guy with the edge of the blade and not the blunt side), defending, proper stances, etc.
Another think he'd have to know is how to actually strike. He'd have to get used to attacking light, but quick. That gets you a better strike. If he just threw his muscle into everything, he'd wear himself out. -IANVS

Re: link' fighting style( swordmanship style )
Though I'm not an expert in the subject of Sword fighting I've observed some things. Because Link fights with a Shield and a Broadened Sword we can probably say that his fighting style was based on a western (European) variation. The way he holds his Sword (in the left) and Shield (in the right) are also proof of this. But The way he actually uses it is probably just for the ease of the player. Link's Techniques were most likely put in to make it seem like he has a style.

Kalas' fighting style from Baten Kaitos and Mizuti's are the best ever.
