Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

I was Searching the internet today when I came across a korean PC game in the works called
WIKI: The Master Of Tales
http://www.webzengames.com
(scroll down the left hand side then click WIKI)

I looked at the screen shots of the game only to find that they are almost IDENTICLE to Wind Wakers Graphics even the main charactor looks like Link, the company have stole nintendo own style, the Game look as though they have just edited the Wind Waker game.
As a Zelda fan this REALLY anoys me to think they are gonna make money off Nintenos back.

Nintendo do all the hard work making a new style to call thire own then some other developer comes along and just swipes it
Makes me wonder if Nintendo knows about this.

So what do you guys think?
Am I making a big deal over nothing?
Are You in surport of this game or against it?
What you You think?

(I dont know if there has already been a thread on this game but if
so please don't hesatate to lock this)

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

It does look like a cheap rip-off of WW, but developers can make games similar to other existing games, there is no law against that (i don't think)

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

I believe Nintendo already threatened them with legal action, but yeah once you change it by 10% it's considered to be your own work under copyright law. I just look at this as a testament to how great the style of Wind Waker was, now that everyone else is using cel-shaded, it's made a bit of a come-back

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

This was posted before, I think when Nintendo threatened legal action. They have changed the appearance of the main charcter I see, before he looked quite similar to Link in his normal clothes, although they did say that the appearance is customisable.

I think it looks awesome. And I can't believe some of you are actually getting angry about this.

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

I Agree. MMORPG, that looks like TWW. Sounds like alot of fun. "Immitation is the greatest form of flattery" Maybe the guy is just a huge Zelda fan and wants to play online. Power to him.

If nobody knows what Bandit is talking about, just take a look at this picture:

And yes Bandit, this was posted here before three months ago in a thread called "Korean MMO resembles Legend of Zelda. Rip off or not?" (Note: Do not post in that old one. It is well over a month old and that would be against the rules.). I honestly don't see that much trouble in arguing about it either. Sure there will be legal disputes, but I also think of it as a form of flattery....but I guess flattery can only go soo far.

Plus that Korean company said that the player can alter the looks of his/her main character, so the argument about the characters looking like Link shouldn't go soo far, but the environment and graphics...possibly.

And as for the main character looking like Link, I can see a resemblance, but I can see more of a resemblance at that kid in the backround:

Blond hair, Green shirt, and brown boots....can't get any closer to him than that.

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

OK, So players can change their characters appearence. If the player chooses to make a Link look-alike, does that give Nintendo the right to take legal action?

Because the game developers of an MMORPG put the option of green clothes and blonde hair in? Can Nintendo sue and lay claim on the Green Clothed, Blonde Haired, hero? Personally I dont think so.

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

If it comes to America, I ask you: Who here that buys it wouldn't make their character look like link? I really want this game it it goes overseas, and since when did Nintendo own Cell shading?

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

I'd love to get a copy of this game and I would definitely make my character look like Link. Looks great so far. Hopefully Nintendo wont kill it before it becomes available. =\

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

It looks very similar to WW, they even gave a kind of Deku shield to the little red and green guys in the background! Maybe plagiarism is more common in Asia than in other countries. Anyway, I think this game can't compete with Windwaker. According to the website of "Wiki", it's a PC online role- playing game, and that's completely different to Zelda....Zelda fans won't bother much with this game, that's my guess. The company could have made more effort with the character models, though... it really looks like WW with different textures. And the clothes the red- haired guy wears look a bit like Link's outfit in the Twilight Princess.
But well... it looks nice, and there could be more cel- shaded games of better quality like WW. It was a completely new style when WW came out, and I don't mind if there are games that look similar, if they have different / good stories.

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

When're you gonna realize... (as Big Brother said) that cel shading was invented long before Nintendo used it. It's just that it was never popular until The Wind Waker.

I know. Cel shading was used in animated cartoons, too, as well as in games, and I didn't say that Nintendo owns the technique. It's just the fact that the most popular cel- shaded game I know is WW.

Re: Biggest Wind Waker Rip Off?

The issue here is not that this company is using cel-shading, it's that Wiki's style is clearly standing on the shoulders of WW. In fact it is nearly identical, anyone can see that. There are other games in development using cel-shading (EG: killer 7) and nintendo is not suing them, because the style, the feel, is very different.

Nintendo is just protecting their intellectual property. And they have every right to do it.

EDIT: Just wanted to add, copyright law protects the gamer too, it forces companies to be creative and to concieve of their own ideas. Otherwise we'd just be stuck with a few great games and a whole bunch of clones, and who really wants that?
