Link's hat

I have been wondering why Link had a long green flowing cap ever since I broke the plastic on OOT those many years ago. What gave Miyamato the idea to give Link a hat like that? What does it mean? i don't know everyone, but ideas can be posted here!

Fairies wear green forest like clothing including hats, this is actually part of Irish Mithology.

Well I haven't played tMC, but I have a feeling the answer lies within there. (now I don't want to go into a timeline frenzy but) it's believed tMC takes place somewhere near the begining. It's quite possible that this is the tale of "The Hero of Man" (the hatless Link shown in the begining sequences of tMC) is why all the Links wear caps today. At least, that's just my guess/theory.

Re: Link's hat

spoilers for BGS

Spoiler (Highlight to read):
Ther hero of man is not the TMC link, the minish cap was originally a minish sage named ezlo, He was transformed into a hat by vaati who stole the magical wish granting hat that ezlo just finished. After playing TMC I have a feeling that it does not take place early in the timeline, I dont know why everyone thinks that, but from what ive learned from playing it, it probably doesnt come first

Re: Link's hat

The MC theory sounds like it could be correct. As for why Myamoto picked it in the first place, it's a cool hat.

Don't read too much into his clothing.

It's become a "signature" thing for Link to have, that's all.

Re: Link's hat

I think its just another piece of clothing that Miyamoto fitted him with. Link has had the hat since as long as i can remember.

Re: Link's hat

Links hat is all his baby. It kinda reminds me of the peter pan hat-although Links hat is way better. So it is just problably a type of oldish/medievl/fairy story type hat. But what bothers me is how it stays on.....

Cha-ching. He's right. It's just part of his costume as well his signature headwear. It's funny how the hat looks cool on Link in the game but ridiculous on anybody in real life.

Re: Link's hat

It might be custom fitted or elastic i dont know, i think it has to do with since he was raised as a kokiri, they resemble elves, and elves wear clothing (hats, tunics, etc.) such as the one he wears, that is where it comes from or at least that is my theory

Re: Link's hat

I think theres really no complex answer i think that the nintendo people drew up some screthes and didnt finish the hair so they slapped on a elfish looking hat, simple as that.

Re: Link's hat

I understand quite good this matter!!! I have a hat that i werar all the time! That could be the issue here too... The designer of link could just have had an obsession with hats!!! Hats are cool!! I love links hat!! It has become the very key clothing he has!! That is how you would recognize him!!! The hat could have been sold like a fan artifact, i guess that it would have sold.... And hats are freaking cool!!!

Re: Link's hat

well...you dont know someone by their hat but yes it has stuck with link for most if not all of the series. its just a trademark that miyamoto wanted link to have, nothing more or less i guess.

Yes, it could be. Mario has a red hat because Shiggy couldn't draw him a good-looking hair while making Donkey Kong (Which was Mario's first game, if someone doesn't know). That was because of the primitive graphics of the 80s.

Or maybe Shiggy just felt like giving the heroic boy a green cap. I don't know.

Re: Link's hat

You may have something about the graphics though. Maybe Miyamoto couldn't make hair for link b/c it was too hard, just like mario. its not what it was back then as it is today, they had very little to work with so i guess he kept the hat for old times sake.

Re: Link's hat

miyamoto came up with link's design in the same way he came up with the design for donkey kong and mario. imagination. then, the hat just became part of link's signature clothes throughout the series. i wouldnt read much into it, its just clothes.

Oh man. LOL! I call Link's hat "The Windsock". I bet it's got tons of uses aside from being able to tell the direction of the wind, though. Like gathering Deku Nuts or catching fairies and bugs, or straining water, or hiding that horrific bald spot on the back of Link's head...

Nah, actually, Link's hat is reminiscent to the common peasant's hood worn throughout Medieval Europe known as a liripipe (actually, that term describes the "tail" of the hood), though it oftentimes had something of a short shoulder-cape that went along with it.

I suspect that perhaps Miyamoto wante
