Where do the Sages names come from in the Ocarina of Time?

Re: Sages

Hmm...I know that at least some of the sages are named after towns in The Adventure of Link. I know Saria, Rauru, and Ruto are names of the towns, but I haven't gotten far enough in The Adventure of Link to find other towns. I hope that helps (by the way, welcome to Zelda Universe).

Re: Sages

Thank you! I thought that was it, but I wasn't sure.

I'm trying to acquire all the old-school zelda games, gold editions especially. So far, I have all N64's, Game Cube, and the very first LOZ game. My goal is to acqure and beat every single LOZ game by the time I'm 25.

Re: Sages

Yeah, the sage names came from AoL.

When we got Adventure of Link, I was quite surprised to see the Sage names.

Does anyone have any idea as to why Nintendo did that? Can anyone think of any sort of reason? I've always been confused by that.

I always thought they did it so it seemed those towns were named after the great Sages. Of course, then that would mean OoT came before AoL, and I don't try to get into the time line thing. Maybe they thought it'd be cool to name the sages after existing towns...?

Re: Sages

I've noticed that Nintendo brings back a lot of bosses from older games too. I personally love it, because it shows how nintendo has evolved and brings back old memories of Zelda.

Re: Sages

I think Nintendo's word was that the sages founded these villages. Or at least, they were named after them. But not all are after Sages - see Mido.

What the heck are you talking about? O_o

Anyways, it's a great thing that they bring back stuff from older games, as it helps build the legend, so to speak. You can really see how the games are tied together. And if we put OoT as the first game, then it's quite easy to understand how the people of Hyrule decided to name their cities after the great sages.

Re: Sages

he is saying that the people who made the game had children. The villages then came from those names.

Re: Sages

...^ Only that isn't true. o.0

I like to think that TAoL started the golden age of that Hyrule, and it was in that age that they payed tribute to the sages.

Re: Sages

I guess it makes sense, that,

a) Nintendo wanted to build a nostalgia, so to speak and,
b) They wanted to make some sort of Legend for the games.

I donn't think that the sages could have founded the villiages, though, didn't they go on to the Sacred Realm one-by-one during OoT?

Re: Sages

In WW, hyrule castle, where u get master sword, there were windows with pictures on all sages from OoT (ok, not the best source but whatever), so they were probably quite known. As miniblin said, lets not go to timeline stuff, but they could have been known in AoL as well, so its probably just as simple as they gave the village a cool name to become famous or so. I think the sages have better things to do than found villages.

Re: Sages

The Sages indeed got their names from the towns (well, most of the towns anyway).

Re: Sages

Yeah, they did. *Counts on fingers* Darunia, Ruto, Saria, Rauru... There was Mido, for some reason, and no Nabooru or Impa.

Re: Sages

There was a town called Nabooru. I think it's the one you'll see right after entering Eastern Hyrule. And then there's also one called Kasuto. Who the heck is Kasuto, anyway? There's not a single person in the history of Zelda called Kasuto.

Re: Sages

Remember, the town names are the point in Zelda real-world history where the names that eventually get used in OoT for the Sages originate from - presumably, they just didn't have a place for Katsuto in OoT when all was said and done so they left the name out.

There's no Impa town because Impa is a character in the LoZ/AoL cycle of games (at least, she appears in the manual books). There's also no Zelda town. Mido and Katsuto probably got bumped from being Sages to make room for Zelda and Impa to take up roles as Sages, seeing as how there could only be Seven Sages (so it could match up with aLttP's backstory), and Zelda and Impa were more important storyline wise.

My personal theory is that Katsuto and Mido become the Wind Sage and the Earth Sage of the OoT era, predating Laruto and Fado (whose names have a similar structure to them - Laruto/Katsuto, Fado/Mido) sometime after the events of OoT

Re: Sages

My theory is that the Sages were named after the towns.
We are told in AoL that each town has its own Wise Man - these were their sages. It makes sense that these would pass their knowledge down in their family, and that they would become known by whatever town they came from - the sage of Kasuto, the sage of Nabooru, the sage of Saria, etc. These names would then become linked to the sages of each bloodline, to reappear in the future.
The towns are:
Saria
Rauru
Ruto
Naburoo
Mido
Darunia
Old Kasuto
New Kasuto
