I completely agree with you. I still feel really uncomfortable going there, knowing that I could be caught if I'm a bit too risky. It feels incredibly tense. The 2nd visit isn't scary at all though.
Skull Woods in
ALttP is the other dungeon that scared me (although it's now one of my favourites in the game). The Wallmaster creeped me out to no end, as well as the dungeon's really bizarre design (initially I thought the dungeon had no proper entrances).
Favourites:
Misery Mire in
ALttP. Great design, has Wizzrobes, and despite being 2D the atmosphere of the dungeon is in no way lacking. The floor screams of some kind of disgusting and dirty place, which is exactly what it is. The dungeon is also huge.
My favourite of all is the Spirit Temple in
OoT. Absolutely beautiful - seems just like I could imagine an ancient Egyptian shrine to be. As well as that, I very much like the hints of a sexual vibe with the music and the female statue in the centre of the temple. The atmosphere is masterful - as it is with all the
OoT temples but the Spirit Temple most of all.
But very close to the Spirit Temple in terms of masterful atmosphere is the Shadow Temple. The feeling of loneliness - being good in a surrounding of pure evil comes across perfectly, as well as the voices early on. What are those voices? The restless evil inside. The iron walls remind me of The Malebolge from Dante's Inferno.
