Should We Keep Link As The Main Protagonist?

So I had this strange idea and wondered what others would think of it?

We all know that in every LoZ title we have played as the main protagonist Link right? Well what if a LoZ was brought out where you played as a different character? And not just another boy dressed in a green tunic named something else, but a completely new redesigned protagonist.
It will still be a LoZ because Zelda will still be involved. It could even contain Link in the game but not as a playable character.

What do you guys think?

Personally I would love to see a LoZ where you play as the HMS collecting all his masks and searching for Majoras Mask. I reckon that wouuld be UBER Cool!!!!

It would ruin the game for me if you didn't play as Link.

Re: Should We Keep Link As The Main Protagonist?

My first instinct was to just say flat out, "No."

My second one as well. Nah, just kidding. But I feel like it would be.. difficult. Link has been in EVERY Zelda game that has been created. He's around way more than Zelda even though the game is named after her. Taking him out would me practically changing the whole game. It'd be like taking Mario out of Mario, or Kirby out of Kirby or... a lot of things! You can do it of course, but you need other characters then, that people know and love, to take their place. Like.. Luigi's Mansion or whatever.

So in the case of Zelda, the choices are limited. It's pretty much either play as Zelda or play as a completely new character with Link playing a very strong side part. (Perhaps he could be your mentor, or father.. or something.)

I wonder if they could make a game focusing more on one of the races.. like you being a Zora or something like that.. idk.

Anyway.. I suppose it COULD work.. maybe.

But I'd be pretty annoyed if they announced something like that.

Nooo! I can not imagine a Zelda game without Link. But if there was going to be a LoZ game without Link, I would most definitely not buy it if it had the HMS as the protagonist.

Re: Should We Keep Link As The Main Protagonist?

Even if Zelda was still involved with the story, it wouldn't really feel like I'm playing a Zelda game without Link.

It would be like playing some weird new character in Mushroom Kingdom dealing with Bowser without the famous Mario.

What If A title came out where you have the choice to play as link and several other characters?

So an RPG? That would be interesting, I'm afraid it would be too much like Mario-RPG or Paper Mario.

Kind of, I mean i dont think character leveling or stats would be a good thing neither too much character building at the start, but rather a new playable character from the LoZ Universe.

Maybe repeat the same story of a previous LoZ but through the eyes of a new protagonist

I think if you play as a different protagonist, you shouldn't have relations to Zelda, and it shouldn't be called a Zelda game. Just create a different franchise without dragging everything else along with it.

Re: Should We Keep Link As The Main Protagonist?

If it's a Zelda game, naturally one would expect it to be related to Zelda in some way, but not all of the time. If it's a different protagonist, and it's not related to Zelda, then it definitely has no reason to be called the Legend of Zelda. Again, they should just make a new adventure alltogether.

I'd love to play a game where Zelda is the playable hero and Link the Prince of Hyrule!
Give'em the old switcheroo and see how they like it!

Re: Should We Keep Link As The Main Protagonist?

I wouldn't like a Zelda game to be without Link.
Now, if there was another kind of game in the world of Zelda with another character, I'd be okay with that.
Removing Link as the playable character is like making a Mario game without being able to control Mario.

Haha, we should have a game that stars Zelda and is called "The Legend of Link," just to screw around with people.

Re: Should We Keep Link As The Main Protagonist?

In reality, there is no such character called "Link," it's just the name used to describe the many protagonists in the Zelda series whose, according to Hyrule Historia, true names are unknown. Basically, this series has many protagonists who share the same name-place (Link), but whose true names are whatever you want them to be until a game comes along, references another game, and specifically names the Hero of Time to be Bob III. For example, notice how Niko in Spirit Tracks never says the hero of that game shares the same name of the hero from The Wind Waker and Spirit Tracks? The said hero is referenced, but Niko never says, "You share the same name!" It's the same with the Hero of Winds... Despite how many times the Hero of Time is mentioned, no one comments on how they share the same name. But as Hyrule Historia said, we don't know the actual name of each hero, and "Link" is just a reference to the link between the player and unnamed heroes. A very iconic reference used to refer to all heroes in the series.

So, what I am saying is... we already have a dozen protagonists. No matter what the next hero looks like or what he or she wears, they will be a "Link" because as song as they're playable in the series, there is a "link" between player and character. It doesn't matter what they look like or what they wear. It's the same with every Zelda, except they're all named after the original from Skyward Sword due to her being legendary in their family line. But at the end of the day, every princess is different but share the same name, but even the so-called "Links" could have names beyond varied.
