Your Zelda Story

Hey everyone, I am not sure if there is or has been a thread similar to this as it seems very unoriginal, but post your Zelda Story. How you were introduced to the series, what you like about it, why you are on Zelda Universe, and any major reactions you have gotten from playing and following the series.

When I was a young lad me and my even younger brother would sit around the TV and watch my older brother play Ocarina of Time. Every so often I would pick up the game myself not making it much further then the Dodongo's Cavern.

Then I was 7... The Wind Waker was coming out of course I was excited to play it as I had recently beaten OoT.
Twilight Princess stirred my Zelda interests as I was around this time getting older.

It is very interesting I grew up with Zelda and as I was growing Zelda grew as well. It wasn't until recently in the past two years that I finally got Zelda and decided to play all of the games. By that I mean I received my understanding of the series as it is today.

I play Zelda because it is a fun game. I love the series; for me playing Zelda for me is like meeting up with a good friend. Although I play mostly for enjoyment. What keeps me coming back to Zelda is the possible stories behind it. All the Zelda games connect in some way and are familiar. Understanding the hidden culture and events in the game is a rush for me. I will play multiple times for enjoyment and each time realize something new.

I guess that is why I am on these boards. Zelda is like a big community. As well as a game. Other games that I have played and enjoyed, some more then Zelda, seem shallow in comparison to Zelda's world. I love Zelda.

Any other people share their stories now? ^-^?

Re: Your Zelda Story

My "first" real Zelda experience was drooling over Nintendo Power screenshots of OoT (lol). Then I bought Link's Awakening DX. I had tried the NES Zeldas, but I was too young to appreciate them or understand their gameplay. I had been a Mario gamer, and only understood the idea of advancing to the next level.

I first pondered the timeline in 2003 when the GCN Collector's Edition came out, and I later played Wind Waker, which made direct references to OoT.

A year later I joined the Nintendo Nsider Forums and really started to theorize for the first time. They shut down, and a couple years later I found and joined ZU, which was a big step towards more complex theorizing.

Re: Your Zelda Story

My first Zelda... I actually reminisce about it a lot, but...
Back in middle school, my friend's-friend-who-was-also-sort-of-my-friend lent me this Game Boy game that he'd been playing-The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. I'd been into a lot of Game Boy games, but I had never played Zelda, or even really knew much about it. But, I was instantly hooked. I still have very fond memories of that game. =) I got to... about the Mermaid's Cavern, I believe, before I had to give it back.
Quite a bit later (Can't remember exactly) I was at the store shopping with my dad. He let me hang out in the electronics section while he got groceries. When he came back to get me, he asked me if I wanted something. While flipping through looking for anything promising, I saw two games that perked my interest- The Minish Cap and A Link to the Past. "Oh, hey, Zelda. Those games are pretty cool." So, I picked out A Link to the Past. Greatest GBA game experience, and one of my best Zelda experiences. It was an instant classic.
Some time later again, new house, hew state, new school, one of my friends was a hardcore Nintendo fan. Metroid, Zelda, Mario, he was into it all. He introduced his friend, also my friend, to Wind Waker. He played it, and commanded me to get it- he said it was awesome. I rented it, but I got bored because I got stuck in the Dragon Roost Caverns. Returned it. A few weeks later, I went to the store and got Paper Mario II and Wind Waker. I was hooked on the Zelda bandwagon ever since.

Well, with Wind Waker, I was stuck simply because I didn't know how to change the direction I was swinging on the Grappling Hook, and I wasn't stuck in Oracle of Ages, I just got to about there before I had to give it back to my friend.

(The only thing I really remember is that ovacular thing that swoops into the corner of the screen that shows whether you're in the past or present).
The first Zelda game that I owned myself was the A Link to the Past/Four Swords combo. Being about two or three years older, I managed to beat the whole game with 99% (I was missing one heart piece ) just out of plain curiosity.
Years went by and I never played another Zelda game again. But one day I was bored and thought to myself "What new Zelda game is coming out soon?" That's when I stumbled upon the "Chronology" section of the "The Legend of Zelda (series)" article on Wikipedia. After reading it, I thought "Pft! How hard could piecing together a timeline for Zelda be?!" Ever since, I've been playing and researching the Zelda games.

I guess what got me back to the Zelda series was the theorizing part of it all. The gameplay for every Zelda game is unique in one way or another and they're all just great games overall.

Re: Your Zelda Story

I always loved watching my uncle anthony struggle through OoT. we would always play SSBM when I was little, and I would either play as roy, samus, or link.

when minish cap came out, I had just got my first gameboy, so I saved up some money and bought it. around the same time, I borrowed LttP from by best friend, and played them both equally. when I beat them both, I was left craving a bit more.

next, I talked to someone at school who just got TP and loved it, so I rented it for GC and played halfway through, then borrowed it from another friend and finished it on the Wii.

next, I rented PH, and got it for christmas to finish it. When I got my wii hooked up to the internet, I downloaded all 4 games(OoT, MM, LoZ, and AoL) and loved them all.

I was so determined to make a timeline by then, I went out and bought the now- old wind waker, and loved it too. Then I found this beautiful place. Now I try to find FSA, OoX, and LA. I can't wait for spirit tracks and ZWii to come out.

welp, that's my story!

Re: Your Zelda Story

I remember seeing my older cousin (who is about 21 now) play OOT on his N64 when I was around 5. I thought it was more of a mature game.

Then came the day I got the N64, and what other game could I get other then MM...well maybe OOT, but it was MM, point of the story.

Re: Your Zelda Story

Well, it all started for me with Ocarina of Time. OoT was the first ever Zelda game I played, and it'll always have a special place in my heart amongst all games. I think OoT probably defined me as a gamer, if I'm honest. It'll always be special to me for that.

Anyway, I had OoT for many years. I played it several times over, each time having as much fun as the first. Then, at one point, I borrowed one of the GameBoy Zelda's, though I didn't get much of a chance to play it and so never got anywhere near completing it. But it didn't compare anywhere near with OoT so I was never that disappointed about that.

Later, when I got my GameCube, I HAD to get Wind Waker, obviously. While it's still a great game, despite a lot of flack it's received for the animation and such (which I disagree with, personally), it can't compare to Ocarina of Time. Nothing ever will. (^^,)

Now I plan on hunting down the Limited Edition Zelda GameCube disc. It has Majora's Mask, a couple of the GB games, but most importantly, it has OoT on it - I really want this because my N63 controller has been out of commission for some time now, and I'd really love to get to play it again, especially since I'm hoping it might come with revamped graphics, considering it's on the GameCube.

And that's the story for me.

You mean the Collector's Edition? I got that with the GC package. It has OOT, MM, LOZ, AOL, a demo of WW, and several promo clips. It's a really nice set.

I'd point some stuff out to you so you don't feel jipped.
- Collector's Disc doesn't have GB games on it only (as UltraLight stated) only LoZ, AoL, OoT, and MM.
- No revamped graphics, so don't get you're hopes up
- Also it isn't that rare, I found one at my local GameStop.

Just thought I'd let you know. (I love this smiley)

Yeah, someone else just pointed that out to me. It doesn't make me want it any less; I'd be happy if it was just MM and OoT, to be honest. As far as the graphics go, it was just a hope, really. I'd have been delighted if there had been a revamp, but even as an identical copy it would still more than kick ass.

But yeah, it seems pretty rare around where I live, since I didn't even know it existed until someone told me about it recently. I don't think we even have GameStop here.

But thanks for letting me know; I appreciate it.

Re: Your Zelda Story

My first Zelda game was A Link to the Past on my neighbors SNES. I thought it was the coolest thing, and after begging them to let me try I got addicted to playing it. I beat the game multiple times, searched for glitches and secrets, had some inside jokes regarding the game, then they showed me the Zelda games that had come out prior to that. I played and beat the original Legend of Zelda game as well as Zelda II and Link's Awakening. I was five when this happened.

Ocarina of Time came out when I was six (almost seven). I was getting horseback riding lessons at the time (I've had them on and off since I was four) and when I found out there was a horse in the game I just about died of excitement. I spent hours looking at the leaked pictures of it online and reading Nintendo Power for more and played it with my neighbors when it came out. At the time my parents refused to let me own a video game console, so I had to play it there. I finally got the game and my N64 in the Christmas o 1999, a week before my eighth birthday.

I remember opening my N64, opening all the presents shaped like N64 game boxes and trying to run out of the room as soon as I found Ocarina of Time. I wanted to start my OWN file and play it. My parents were mean and made me open up my other presents though. I played that game nonstop until Majora's Mask came out.

I just started playing and beating every Zelda game from there, and in between games I'd rebeat Ocarina of Time. I'm not sure what fascinated me so much about that game--maybe it was the insane amount of glitches, or maybe it was the fact that it had a horse. I just loved the game world and the characters and... everything. Ocarina of Time mixed very well with me. I've beaten it over 200 times, but I don't claim to be better than anyone else at that game. I've seen some insane playthroughs on youtube where the person goes the entire game without taking damage. I could never do that.

Zelda is very important to me because not only is it the first video game (series) I ever played, it's also one of the few passions I had growing up that stayed with me. I had a very tough childhood and Zelda got me through it. I am very attached to the series.

Zelda is the cheese to my pizza. I'm not kidding--it could be the only game series I play for the rest of my life and I'd be totally happy.

Re: Your Zelda Story

Some time in like, second or third grade, I watched over the shoulder of a kid who was playing "Zelda" on his Gameboy. It looked like fun, so when I eventually got my own Gameboy, I asked my parents to buy the game for me. And it just kind of went from there.

Re: Your Zelda Story

I was an instant Zelda fan when the first two games were released. My cousin got me AoL for my birthday and I played that game nonstop, getting to the point where I could almost beat it in my sleep. I didn't actually beat LoZ till much later, but I played it on and off when I had the chance. It wasn't until my girlfriend lent me the game that I finally had the chance to sit down and play it.

ALttP was then released and I got it as soon as money would allow. It was a few years later that I finally got a SNES and ALttP actually came with it. My copy of AoL had since broke, so ALttP was my only Zelda game for awhile (my girlfriend eventually wanted her game back )

From then on I pretty much played the games in the order they were released. I find it interesting to see that many of you had your first experience with Zelda playing either OoT or WW. Makes me feel old... LOL, my wife calls this my Zelda Obsession. She's right; the Zelda series is definitely my number one favorite out of all the games out there.

Re: Your Zelda Story

My first Zelda game was Link's Awakening. As bad as it sounds it took me years to finally beat that game. Mostly cause I would get stuck and give up for a while then come back and try again then give up for a while. I was hooked on the Zelda games though, but once I finally beat LA I didn't get the chance to play another Zelda til my last year in college when a friend who lived across the hall introduced me to the 3-D games. For me it was like being reunited with an old friend and I made it through OoT and WW before I graduated. Since then I've been collecting the Zelda games (as money allows). I've tried LOZ and so far haven't had much success, but I intend to keep trying.

Re: Your Zelda Story

I'm pretty sure I watched my brother pass ALttP once when I was like 3, but have vague memories of it and never really got to play it over 3 mins. Then OoT came out in'98 when I was 4, and asked for it because my brothers wanted it. And I got it, and my bros wanted to kill me. I also got a guide and passed the game fairly quickly, then passed it without the guide. So, I would force my mom to hook up the SNES so I could pass ALttP. I did. Then MM came out, and again I passed it, just without a guide. I was 6. I was like a child prodigy at games.

Then I got pretty well every Zelda after that, and got all the previous Zelda's hooked up. I spent about a year finding LA though, which I only found at a collectors item shop.

But yeah, ALttP is my favorite, then TP, then FSA. That's right, I played OoT first, and it isn't my favorite, it is defo an INCREDIBLE game though.

That's my story.
