Re: Most epic scene in a video game?
But great gameplay, a deep storyline, and developed characters do.

Hey 315, have you ever played Jade Empire? I would recommend that if you liked Mass Effect. The gameplay is not as polished, but like Mass Effect, Jade Empire's endgame was one incredible rush.

But on topic, the "Entering Subspace" cutscene from the SSBB story mode was incredible. Especially once the music started playing. |

Re: Most epic scene in a video game?
I don't know if others would count this as epic, but there are some moments in the Half-Life 2 series, that when playing for the first time, I heard that techno music kicking in and just had a wave of euphoria until the battle was over. Especially true of the Episode Two final level.
Also, setting up defences against huge forces in Company of Heroes, when there's machinegun fire and mortar fire everywhere and artilery strikes are being called in and you're trying to co-ordinate against that last damn tank that's almost broken through your lines. That game is so intense.

Don't kid with me. The only developed characters were Navi, the Tree, and Ganondorf.

I think the end of MGS 1 was pretty epic for a PS1 game. Megaman Legends had some epic boss fights but most of them were easy. I guess the real award goes to the ending of HL2 EP1. Those tracks were destroyed. :/

I would say the cutscene after you play Oath to Order near the end of Majora’s Mask. That scene just felt so awesome to me…

Re: Most epic scene in a video game?
"E....B....A!
E...B...A! E..B..A! E.B.A! EBA! EBA! EBA!" "Are you ready?" "YEAH!" "3, 2, 1, let's go!" That would be from Elite Beat Agents, for all you philistines who have never played it. It's from the finale. The agents have just been turned into statues by the villains, thus crushing the rebellion. Then a little girl starts chanting "EBA!", other people start joining in, until eventually the combined might of their cheering de-statuefies the agents, and they begin dancing to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" to defeat the aliens. The finale to Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer probably counts. You have, for the whole game, been stuck with a curse that gives you an almost irresistible need to consume souls. At the end you travel to the plane of the dead, leading a crusade and wielding a mystical sword of immense might, to tear down the wall of the faithless* to end your curse. *In the Forgotten Realms setting all those who die without pledging allegiance to any of the deities ends up built into a wall and slowly consumed by acidic moss for centuries. You're leading a crusade of people (well, mostly angels, actually. And a Lich) who feel that it's very existence is unjust.

Re: Most epic scene in a video game?
Nope. Neither of the two Neverwinter Nights games are MMOs. Both can be played entirely on a computer with no internet connection.
Both have an excellent and thriving online service, though, helped immensely by having both games ship with the developer toolset and server software.

Re: Most epic scene in a video game?
They're just Computer RPGs.
I suppose the narrowest genre definition would be "Western fantasy computer RPGS.) (Most of 1 is "low-fantasy", or "Swords and Sorcery", as is most of the core game of 2. Mask of the Betrayer (and Hordes of the Underdark) however, are definitely "High fantasy") Some CRPGs ship with toolsets, some don't. Some can be multiplayer, others aren't. There's no hard-and-fast term for them, alas.
