I understand it, but I guess it just ruins the fun of replaying Path of Radiance because I now know that most everything in that game isn't as it appears.

I should really get back into FE4 (no I'm not going to try typing out its full name) at some point, but the first mission took me about three hours so I'm a little wary.

Yeah, I really think so. It depends on what kind of games you're interested in. If you're a sucker for story-driven, turn-based strategy goodness, then the Fire Emblem series is right up your alley. If not... Well, it's worth a try!

I greatly hate turn-based garbage, but I'm really interested in FE's strategy system.

Yes. It's Shadow Dragon, a remake of Marth's game.

If you're looking for a straight-to-the-point FE game, Shadow Dragon on DS might be good to check out. It really doesn't have any story or character development whatsoever, so it gets right to the gameplay. I found it to be a good portable FE in that sense.

It has a few features the other games don't, though.
For one, it has save points (which helps reduce frustration when one of your units dies-- and I'm sure you know this, but they don't come back once they die). It also has a class change system, where you can change most units' classes to something else within the same tier (except unique units such as ballisticians and whatnot).

If you really are interested in playing Fire Emblem, you might want to start with Fire Emblem for the Gamboy Advance. Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon on DS is a remake of the first game on NES, and it really shows how outdated that game is. FE is much more balanced and fun, and it actually has a decent plot.

I don't care what people say, that is not a good gameplay element.

That said, FE7 (the first on GBA outside Japan) is a great game.

I think you should start with Path of Radiance if you want to get into FE. I think it's an overall much better game than FE7 though both have a tutorial system. FE7 is only easier than PoR, imo until a bit after Eliwood's story starts. I'm still stuck there, actually, but that's because I haven't picked up the game in a long time. But after that it gets harder. PoR is the better choice if you don't want to start with something hard, but want to start with something that has tutorials.

RD also has tutorials, but they're rather more advanced, plus the game is the hardest one I've played so far, imo(and I've played all of the ones released outside of Japan).
