Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
The way you describe those categories I don't fit in any of them. You focused the "core gamer" term too much on those kiddies, who play FPS with analog sticks and believe, they're "f*#kin' hardcore". That's not entirely true, "core gamers" or "regular gamers" or whatever you want to call them can be found on all systems with very, very different preferences. For example a core PC gamer doesn't like the HD twins at all, because those are just limited PCs plugged to your television, he prefers to play FPS games and alike with his mouse and keyboard on the computer, where real competition can be found. On the other hand he also likes the Nintendo Wii, because it's actually a real video game console (in the sense of the 80's and 90's), because it focuses on stuff, you CAN'T do with a PC. It focuses on local multiplayer and innovative ways of playing games. It's fun. That's why a lot of core gamers are attracted by the Wii and don't give a sh#t about the other consoles.
Me personally, most of my favorite core games come from Nintendo, especially Zelda and Metroid. And I'm very happy with what Nintendo did with the Wii, redefining the video game market. I never had so much fun with friends and family with a single video game console. Especially with family, I've never played games with them before, because they thought that's something for kids who spent all their life in a dark basement, until they saw the Wii. Nintendo redefined gaming, opened gaming for everyone, and that's a good thing, because otherwise the market slowly would have died. The PC immitating consoles were the wrong direction. I also like to play classic games, which is why I love the Virtual Console (and maybe even the WiiWare, if something good hits it). So what does this make me? "Expanded Core Classic Gamer" I guess. xD Quote:

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
You didn't really explain this very well, AA. Here's a quick run-down of the impression I got from your definitions of the three categories:
Quote:
I've been gaming since the days of the Master System and Mega Drive, and still really enjoy games on those two systems (as well as the NES and SNES, but I have less of those), so I can't be in the expanded audience group. I'm not part of the classic audience, either - I'm quite happy to play any game on any system that I think I'll enjoy. Most of those happen to be on the Wii in the current gen, which is why I don't own a PS3 or XBox 360. And as for the core audience? Pfft. Not a chance.

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
I'm actually a combination of all. I prefer HD over the Wii's motion controller (though an HD Wii would be the best thing to ever happen in gaming), I like harder games, I think that the SNES and N64 eras were better than the current era, and I don't play too many video games (well, not too many outside of Nintendo and emulators).

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
I'm not talking about gaming--hardcore, to quote a dictionary - "hard-core: intensely loyal; "his hard-core supporters". Rather than a specific noun, it's more to describe the type of gamer you are, in my eyes.

I don't conform to gaming labels. I'm just a gamer that enjoys action-adventures, RPGs, and platformers.

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
I consider myself both hardcore and retro, as I love older games, but also play tons of current hardcore games as well. I'm voting for retro though, since most of the current hardcore games I love (mario zelda metal gear) are just sequals to retro games anyway, so I guess its more applicable.

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
I definantly consider myself retro. While I love some current hardcore games like Halo, Guitar Hero, GTA, ect, its usually only because of the fun I have playing with friends. It I don't have to accomidate other people, I usually play stuff like Chrono Trigger, Super Mario Bros 3, FFVII, Banjo Kazooie, Punchout, etc.

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
I personally feel I'm in the core audience, although you make it sound as if I can't enjoy old games without being in the classic audience. In reality I'm a core gamer who enjoys anything that's good, aside from minigame collections, FPS games and "pure" rpgs, such as FF and DQ. Fire Emblem and the Metroid Prime series are exceptions from this, though, and the Warioware games would be if they didn't have full prices.
But as Tiroth said, the three categories are immensly flawed. |

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
Yikes, i see the problem. Id say you need to separate it more like this:
-Fanboy ( )- Eats, sleeps and plays a certain company. ( no matter if its good/bad, core/casual.)-Core- Plays games as a main(-ish) Hobby. Experienced. Knows a bit/lot about the industry. -Casual- Plays video-games as a "pass-time" with no knowledge of the industry. EX: Console war, Company mascots, difference between system "A" and its predecessor(s), E3, etc. And thats why most people on these forums will (most-likely) fall under hard-core |

Re: Core, Classic or Expanded?
Look, those who can't decide, its simple:
If your favorite games are things like Elder Scrolls, Halo, Assasins Creed, Half Life, etc., your a core gamer. If you can play games like Wii Music, Wii Play, Carnival Games, Scene It?, etc for more than half an hour without wanting to throw up, your If you think that current games are too easy and you would rather go play an SNES, your retro. |
