Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

I quite like the idea of this sensor. I think if used with the right games it could be very effective. Plus i'm the kind of person who's want to know all the silly stuff like heartbeat rate XD

Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

Sincerely, I think I've never been so embarrased about being a Nintendo fan as I was when Iwata showed the Wii Vitality Sensor in the E3 conference. An easy joke came to my mind instantly, and it was "Imagine: geriatrics"...

Now I realize Nintendo didn't explain very well what are they planning to do with that peripheral, but to me it seems an insta-fail

If there's little to no information about this thing, how can you say it's "insta-fail", when you don't even know how it will be used or what it's capable of?

Seriously, would you play with that thing hanging on your finger? They didn't make me buy the Balance Board, and they won't make me buy that thing. I don't need a message saying "Wao, did you poo?" while I'm playing Resident Evil...

Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

I like the way you think Double A. It may not be as well educated as some ideas I have heard before, but the point here is not to ***** and whine about the Big N's new peripherals and expansions to further milk their most crucial system; the idea, I believe, is to discuss what this specific peripheral could do.

Throw out all the confusion and 'wtf' feel for this device and honestly get your brain to spin and not just lay there whining that Nintendo hasn't released a Zelda Wii trailer or that Kid Icarus will happen or that Nintendo just doesn't know us 'hardcore gamers'. Because at least Nintendo is working and not laying on their arse using gimmicks or taking others ideas and expanding on them; they are hard @ work on reaching the world. Thank Iwata and Miyamoto for actually turning video games from a cult play thing to an actual source as big as Films, Music, and other arts.

The idea of your character getting increased senses due to an adrenaline rush is pretty cool.

Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

I was pretty sure the E3 announcement of a peripheral that hasn't yet been attached to any actual software was a sarcastic move by Nintendo- even though I'm also pretty sure it is a real peripheral.

I mean, everyone got excited when Iwata took the stage, because everyone thought it meant a big announcement. And then he started taking his time, and what did he bring out? A device that measures your heart rate. I'm sure everybody's heart rate was going up when they realized that wasn't the real announcement.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who caught the irony.

Bolded part; And you know that such a feature will be used? No, you don't.

And yeah, if it enhances the gameplay experience to my liking, then yes, I'll wear it.

Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

A lot of the time gamers won't be affected by the game, especially one with 'worse graphics' than on the 360 and PS3. That kind of means that you're only going to get an advantage if you're the kind of guy who passes out from fright after you say "boo", and not it you're one of the people who just isn't scared of what's going on on a game. Plus, they're already doing the "adapt to how you play" thing in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, and I'd say that's more effective than judging it on how your finger is feeling today. Not to mention it looks cumbersome.

It could only really work in a good enough way if they made a super scary game on the Wii that has a genuinely scary atmosphere, as well as you not thinking "oh wow, this game is pretty scary, but look at all of this crap that's I'm holding".

Too many quote examples, I know.

The game doesn't need to be scary.

The only thing that needs to react is your heartbeat. That's all that they need to make a truly effective horror game.

Your heartbeat isn't going to change much if you're not scared in the game though, is it?

You're telling me that, if the game just began to spew up hordes and hordes of enemies at you, your heartbeat wouldn't change at all?

Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

Yes perhaps, but that would mean the game is scary haha. I'm not saying it isn't possible, I'm just saying I think it would be hard to do, and it would be even harder for people to demonstrate its effects. You can't exactly have a 03:24 Gametrailers video showing you, "okay so I'm getting a little tense, a little scared now, see how I gain extra speed?". I'm thinking people will pin that down to a gameplay mechanic, and since you can't really exemplify emotions like that, it's going to be pretty difficult to give examples of this thing in short amounts of time. I also think that people are going to be playing games designed for the sensor and trying to see what happens without it on.

The funny thing is, you still havent told me how it would NOT work.

Game throws a few enemies at you, begins to become repetitive. Heart rate goes down. VS picks this up, game begins to throw more enemies at you, upping your heart rate and keeping you on your toes.

The second time you go thru said area, you expect to be bombarded with enemies like last time, so your heart rate rises in anticipation. You get few/no enemies. Your heart rate goes down because you begin to feel safer because of the lack of enemies, which begins the whole cycle yet again.

IMO, a true horror game doesn't have to be scary, it just needs to mess with your head.

Re: Wii Vitality Sensor - A horror-genre gamer's dream?

In your example, it only works if the game starts sending crap loads of enemies at you. How else is it going to work? You're assuming more enemies = more nervous. Most of the time, survival horrors will only send out 1 or 2 enemies at you at a time. 10 enemies would just seem like "oh wow, they spammed enemy spawns to get some use out of this peripheral". Ironically, it wouldn't really work whilst knowing that.

Those games could fall into the last part of what you quoted:

Quote:

I'm not saying it can't work, it has to be good for something or else they wouldn't have made it. I'm saying it mightn't translate well into gameplay, because emotions are different with everyone. You can have people who play RE4 like a random shooter, then you have people who can't complete it because it's too scary. I'd love to be proven wrong with a game that uses it well in the future.
