Final Fantasy XIV Announced! PS3 Exclusive!

My thoughts: Will eventually turn multiplatform.

I'm way too excited about FFXIII to care much about XIV. It'd be too overwhelming to be excited about both. I would have rather wanted to see Versus and still hope to get more insight on it, as well as Agito (and Parasite Eve 3).

We'll see. But the way Jack emphasized its PS3 exclusivity almost sounded like "OK, we learned some lessons from FFXIII, and we've taken efforts to keep this one exclusive."

Anyone else get that impression?

EDIT: Official website up! As expected, the Information section lists platforms as "PlayStation 3, Windows," so it looks like it's only PS3-exclusive in the console sense.

And it has music by Nobuo Uematsu and artwork by Akihiko Yoshida (FFXII, Vagrant Story, FFTactics, etc.)! Booya!

Is it being worked on by the XI crew? They also made Chrono nigga you know.

It'd be nice to know what Matsuno's up to these days. First we hear that he was going to work with Monolith Soft on a Wii rpg after they got done with Disastaah, but then he ends up writing for Platinum Games on Madworld.

Unfortunately for all the other Chrono Break hopefuls out there and I, yes.

And this is being made by the Final Fantasy XI team, not the XIII team. The delays have nothing to do with each other.

And the characters are done in the same art style as XI's. Which also look generic, to answer the question.

So how does everyone else actually feel about this? I'll admit that I was shocked and completely "OMGWTF" when Jack said FFXIV, but the the excitement dwindled a bit after I saw that it was Project Rapture/FFXI-2. Nevertheless, I have a feeling that it will end up being pretty solid, and hopefully a bit more casual and streamlined than FFXI. It would be nice to be able to solo, level up faster, and have a bunch of easy-to-access quests open to you at all times. Basically, I hope they look to WoW for inspiration, because if they don't, this game will fail.

But think about this. This is being developed for PS3 and high-end PCs. FFXI already focused on more cinematic storytelling, which was basically unheard of when it was released, so imagine how epic this could end up being with current-gen technology. I wonder if they'll incorporate voice acting and cinematics and all that good stuff.

Overall, in the end, I was far more excited to see the new FFXIII footage. But knowing that this is coming out so soon, and that the team behind it have probably learned a lot from their mistakes over the past 7 years, I think this could end up being a really great MMO.

I guess I'm looking forward to it (FFXI is one of the few MMOs I enjoyed and they are a quality dev team) but I'm still confused, doesn't make a lot of sense from Square's point of view that they are cramming two Final Fantasy's so close together.

And considering the way SE works it'll probably be delayed.

Anyone else get that impression?

I did. Got the same vibe. This thing is not going to be on 360, I don't even think 360 can handle it.

I'm excited for this. I've been wanting to get back into the world of MMO's. The last one I played was runescape, and that was years ago. It came as a total shock to me. I love how the guy was like "yeah, this **** didn't get leaked!" that was a huge surprise. I love how it's set in the old days, like the old final fantasies, midevil/steampunk. Not the newer sci-fi stuff that the more recent ones are like.

I'm going to get this. I'm more interested in "The Old Republic" right now, but this looks like a fun follow up to XI.

I loved FFXI's story and look, but I never could get into the gameplay. It was so tedious and took so much time. I could never find a party and it was just all around boring. I never did get very far. Hopefully FFXIV is more user friendly.

I hate Square for making so many ****ing FF games and ignoring their other franchises. This thread is a good example of OMG!!!! FF!!!! fanboy ****. Also wasn't this game announced to come to 360 last year? How did microsoft lose this deal?

You're thinking about 13. 13 is still multi-console; 14 won't be.

They've always announced future FF titles before the next immediate one in the series. It really shouldn't be counted the same way, either, as FFXIV is an MMO. Also, as for XIII, it's been a few years since the last single-player FF, which in turn was multiple years after the previous single-player FF.

In addition, may people believe that back when FF games were released one to two years after the last one (As with VII, VIII, IX, and X), the series was of a far higher quality.

The main reason I understood how this could have happened, is because the team who did Final Fantasy XI will be doing XIV, and that same team won't be helping with XIII, VersusXIII or AgitoXIII. It's not that much of an impossible thing when you come to think about it. It's similar to having "Zelda DS Team" and "Zelda Wii Team". Though, I'm not entirely sure why they count as numbered games, since they aren't really the same.

They count as numbered FFs because they are. They use the same stuff as the other main titles right down to story. The difference is just in the gameplay.

I'd honestly be a little jealous of PS3 owners but when I figured out it was an MMO, I almost threw up. I don't find MMOs fun at all, though I like the direction that Square is trying to go in, trying something new, and for that commend them, but this whole 'lets turn this next game in a great franchise into a MMO!' is getting a bit crazy. They did it with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and now they're doing it with FF. I don't know how to feel about this...

I'm not sure if it's been posted in here yet, but here are the most notable things said about it in Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIV Q&A:

1) Not using PlayOnline!
This was arguably one of the worst problems with the first one. I was such a ****ing pain just to sign up and register. It takes a while to even figure out how to get into the game. It's a big deal that this is gone, and it's going to help the game a whole lot.

2) Easy to solo!
This again, as you know if you've played Final Fantasy XI, is a much needed. In XI, you'd have to wait for hours and hours to get a party, and even longer to get an ideal one. You couldn't really solo in that game, and you were wasting so much time because of it. Now, they're saying you'll be able to play for 40 minutes, a few hours, or all day. Alone, or with a party. I'm glad they did this, because this is what inevitably drove me away from getting through all of XI.

3) Releasing worldwide!
Everyone in the world will be starting from scratch, at the same time. This means that you're not going to be running around seeing all of these JP players at level 75 because you had to wait for the release in NA and PAL. It also makes for easier parties, if you want to do that more anyway, since everyone will be starting.

STARTING A GAME AT LAUNCH IS GOOD! You get advantage +1.

4) Worldwide servers!
This is something WoW doesn't have, and it's really lame. This basically means that I, in PAL, can play with you, in NA, and our friends, in JP. So this means us at ZU who are getting it need to join the same server. I call Fenrir!

So there we go. There were a lot of other little details that I found interesting, regarding the races and job systems and so on, so you should go read up on that too (somewhere near the back of the E3 thread). These are the four main things I found to be most important though.

Also, less grinding please!

OH! It's not set in Vana'diel, or related to XI, either. It's set in Eorzea. Just packing that in there in case you guys didn't know (though you probably do).

I'm excited too. I can't wait! I really want to make a team of internet buddies, and do all of the fun crap you can do in a final fantasy game. kill monsters, go on quests, explore, unlock stuff, get new weapons and armor, level up, etc! I can't wait! was there voice chat in XI? I asume not, but if there was in this, that'd be pretty cool! I think I'm gonna get a ps3 just for this game! I used to have a blast playing runescape way back in the day with my grade school buddies, and runescape is argueably one of the most monotonous and weakest MMO's out there, so this is gonna be wicked!

only 1 and a half years till release! (asuming there is no delays, which there inevitably will be )
