Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

From the Miyamoto roundtable.
Quote:

6:28 p.m.: "This is a really fun game to work on and develop, but it's also a really great game to play."

6:27 p.m.: Whenever he loses his ability, he uses a debug cheat to trigger it again. Too funny.

6:26 p.m.: Mario slides humorously through the level and hurls snow balls that freeze enemies in mid-air, creating platforms for the plumber to jump atop.

6:25 p.m.: Miyamoto plays one of his favorite stages, a snow level, and here Mario dons a penguin suit. Nintendo's master designer dies in the game right off. "That's why we're not allowing any photographer." Pretty funny.

6:24 p.m.: The title features roughly 80-something levels.

6:22 p.m.: Wii's added processing power enables Nintendo to create this kind of multiplayer game because the console can handle all four players plus additional on-screen characters, etc.

6:21 p.m.: The camera in New Super Mario Bros. auto pans in or zooms out depending on what is happening between players at any given moment.

6:20 p.m.: (On NSMB Wii) The balance between competitive and cooperative multiplayer gameplay harkens back to the original Mario Bros.

I don't really give a crap what it looks like, although it would have been cooler if they went back to sprites.
Man, it feels like forever since I've seen a sprite side-scroller from Mario.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I always thought NSMB for the DS was pretty overrated. It was just too easy, had mostly useless new powerups, and some dull level design. As far as 2D retro Mario DS games go, Yoshi's Island was a lot more fun. So I don't care that much about this new one for the Wii. However, the claims that you can switch to multi-player in-game if it gets too difficult gives me some hope the game will provide a decent challenge for single-player. I'm also a bit skeptical that the game is using the exact same graphics engine as the DS version.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I don't care what it looks like, this sounds like a lot of fun. If there's one thing that NSMB definitely came up short in, it was interesting powerups. This one seems to be correcting that, I especially like the idea behind freezing guys to use as platforms.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

The one thing they could make great is using multiple players to reach new areas. This might have been hard to do though, since if you play 2P it's going to be impossible to reach areas where you need 4P.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I second the difficulty comment. I hope this game is an actual challenge, and I don't constantly have 60 extra lives.

Edit: In the Listen Up podcast covering yesterday's conferences, everybody who played the demo says they had quite a bit of fun to it. They compare it to Zelda: Four Swords, which is a bit of a turn off for me, but listening to them talk about how fun it is won me right back over.

It looks like a pretty decent game. And the special abilities look good.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Honestly, I think this game would ne cooler if it supported 4-player online play incase you don't have 4 wii controllers or people around. It would be fun to play with both friends and strangers. The demo I watched on the nintendo channels E-3 confrenence video, looked like a great time.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

GamesCom 2009 Trailer.

I really dislike the music and sound effects. The graphics clearly do not suffer from the Uncanniness that the DS version did. I cannot WAIT for this game.

That trailer is old, and from E3.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I obtained New Super Mario Bros. for the DS over the summer, and dear god - so much fun I've had with single player and multiplayer, and to think that this game is around the corner? I can't friggin' wait.

EDIT: I really would have liked for the old jump sound to have been brought back, but I suppose this isn't too bad.

Yeah. It seems Nintendo is doing that with all of their GamesCom trailers. Sweet, Nintendo. You might as well not even be there. Sony Conference 2009 confirmed.
