Really, the gym leaders are not hard enough that you need to counter them. You'll probably only need your combusken.

Ha, tell that to Brawly, the second leader whom I lost several times to EVEN THOUGH I HAVE TWO POKEMON WHO KNOW FLYING TYPE MOVES. >_>

That doesn't make him good, but your bad. He was easy as hell.
The only computer opponent I remember only having trouble with was blue from R/B and lance from G/S. Ow and maybe Red.

I'm not bad. My Pokemon were at the ☭☭☭☭ing same levels as his, Quin. Don't flame me.

That just means you are bad at adapting and countering in battle. If they're the same levels, it should be an even match.

I had a Combusken at 22 and I has a Kirlia at 20 at that point. Skip Dewford and train at Slateport City.

Wattson is actually incredibly easy without a ground type. The last time I played Ruby, I had a Grovyle and Swellow that were pretty strong and they easily took him down. Just evolve Tailow into Swellow, have him get paralyzed, and Guts gives you a huge attack boost. Or (this is probably an easier possibility) you can just have Combusken use Double Kick and Ember for the whole fight.

I am replaying Crystal (I finally got it to work again, yay me) and here is my team so far:

Phanpy lvl 7
Pidgey lvl 7
Hoppip lvl 7
Cyndaquil lvl 10

Very nice. Except I'm farther than Slateport now. I'm at the third gym.

Have your Combusken at at least lvl 30. If it knows double kick and ember then it can most likely take on the gym leader's pokemon on its own. (depending on your 'wise' decisions)

Well yeah, but if you really wanted Watson done quickly, you'd sweep his team with one pokemon. :>

I always find it easier to have one ultra strong pokemon than have a bunch of average pokemon. I was able to sweep the elite four without healing at all when I only trained my starter.

Huh. I find it easier to have a balanced team. I once tried to train only my starter, but had trouble against types it was weak to. So I always go for a balanced team.

Same here. One monster pokemon works fine.

Yup. If you have trouble, use TMs to teach it certain moves (infernape can learn thunderpunch so it's strong against water and flying types)

I find it easier with a Balanced Team. I faired better in battle with my balanced Pearl team.

I had a harder time with a balanced team. It took longer to train and I did worse in battles.
Oh well.

Yup, me too. In all 4 gens I at least once completed the whole game with just my fire starter. Far easier then training a team

Hah, you probably didn't train hard enough then. I did it plenty of times in my Red version, had my Charmeleon's level in the late thirties when I was going for my third badge. LT Surge's pokemon were level 28 at the most.

lol well, if I could beat the Elite Four and Cynthia with a balanced team in Platinum, I think I can complete my other games the same way. :]
