The Official PlayStation Network Thread

I was originally going to post a thread about a single game coming to PSN, but with new releases every week, I figured that maybe we should just have a general thread for announcements and the like.

On that note, there wasn't much to get excited about this week, unless you really want to play a Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection demo. In any case, you can see the full run-down of what's new this week here.

But in more interesting news, it was just announced that Final Fantasy VII International has been released in Japan. This doesn't matter much to me because if I wanted to play it on my PS3 I could just pop in the discs and if I wanted to play it on my PSP I could just take advantage of my custom firmware, but if you've never played FFVII or just want to play it on your PSP without screwing around with it or using Remote Play, here's a (possible) solution for you. That is, if it doesn't suffer the same fate as Metal Gear Solid and Xenogears and remain stuck in Japan.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

I would love to replay Xenogears again. On a personal level I'm pissed that other people won't have the chance to be introduced to this amazing game. On the other hand, I own a legit PS1 copy and have a ROM on my computer. So, no skin off my bones.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

I support this thread 100%, and am willing to help post updates every week. Though it would be nice if we could have a mod edit the thread title to include the big news/releases of the week.

W00T to Final Fantasy VII though! I can't believe they released it just like that, for $15 of all things! Wuuuah?

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

Sweet deal. And yes, that would be awesome! I'll try to edit it when I can though (I think thread-starters can edit them here, can't they?)

And $15 is pretty expensive compared to other PS1 games on PSN, but it's actually pretty generous when you consider Square Enix have a habit of selling other straight up ports for $40. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come from them, but who knows if SCEA will get on board.

I'll edit it for you if want. Just leave a little note in either a post stating what you want the new title to be or just VM me.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

While not exactly an announcement, Ars Technica is reporting rumors that Patapon 2 will be download-only -- it'll be released on the PlayStation Store, but a box with a download code will be available at retail.

Interesting method of doing digital distribution without pissing off retailers, and it gives even more credence to the rumors that PSP will go download-only within the next year.

Also, it seems there's some more news on Konami's PSN/XBLA prequel to their PS1 strategy RPG series, Vandal Hearts. You can read GameSpot's preview here. It's apparently set for a release later in the year.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

This week was full of the usual: lots of Rock Band/Guitar Hero tracks and some assorted media. But there was also some fairly awesome stuff, like PixelJunk Eden Encore and some Valkyria Chronicles DLC. The PixelJunk Eden expansion is especially appealing to me, because it includes an additional 5 levels for a mere $5.99. Unfortunately I don't have much use for it yet because I'm still playing the core game, but Encore looks like it'll be a great way to stretch out the experience a bit longer when I'm done.

You can read about the rest of the updates here.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

Final Fantasy VII better come to the American PSN in good time. The cost of buying it secondhand on the Internet is ridiculous. No one should have to pay that much for this game.

I downloaded PixelJunk Eden Encore, though I haven't beaten the normal game yet.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

I bought the Valkyria add-ons (er, all of them) though I've yet to beat the core game.

The extra missions justify those packs, and I don't doubt that I'll spend plenty of frustrating hours trying to deal with the new "Ex hard" mode for skirmishes.

Now, if only they had an add-on pack to make my squad actually arrest the villain when they find him unarmed in chapter 7, rather than letting him walk into his 3-story tall tank that he managed to sneak up on me in the middle of the dessert.

Seriously, I'd pay $5 to get my squad glasses or something.

I bought the special suit for Dead Space. This was back when it was free though. Lol.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

Nice thread, the PSN store has been a great place to throw money that you can't afford to spare around as of late!

At the minute there's something strange going on with my PS3 at the minute, whereby I can seemingly download things no problem but I can't install them, so I won't be getting it right away, but has anybody played through the Valkyria Chronicles DLC yet? Weird sentence there, but I'm sticking with it.

I'm tempted to go for the Sylvaria pack, although I'd want to know how much content is in there. From a pretty lazy Google search, I'm finding some conflicting opinions about the value of it.

With the exception of the Metal Gear Solid level pack for LittleBigPlanet, I've felt a bit ripped off with most of the DLC that I'm plunked money down for. I know that some of it is ridiculous and nobody should ever buy it, but I'm not talking about my Meryle and Raiden Sack-people (HOLLA BACK PC-BRIGADE!) or Everybody's Golf characters. I'd gladly pay even MORE money to play golf with the characters from Ape Escape.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

Man, I've been doing a bad job of keeping this up to date. Sorry.

There's some good stuff this week, like the addition of King of Fighters '99 for PS1 ($5.99), Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic for FREE until May 21st, and Bionic Commando Rearmed for a mere $4.99.

You can see a full list of updates here.

EDIT: Update for May 21

Another one of those slow weeks sadly, but there are a couple demos to check out: namely, the ones for inFamous and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. You can get the full list here.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

At least we got some Playstation One games finally this week. Neither of them really jump out at me, but at least we're actually getting them.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

Post-E3 update! Lots of new stuff in the store, including some awesome trailers and wallpapers (the FFXIII trailer is amazing, and I love my Dissidia PSP theme), and some new games!

Stuff up right now:

Resident Evil: Director's Cut for $9.99
Medal of Honor for $5.99
Final Fantasy VII for $9.99
Street Fighter Alpha 2 for $5.99
Wolfenstein 3D for $4.99

Also, some things to look forward to! Metal Gear Solid is due to be posted on the store on June 18 for $9.99, and the LittleBigPlanet Shadow of the Colossus DLC pack is coming out next week! June 11th! Booya.

So, lots of great stuff. Anyone else have the feeling they were holding off on the bigger PS1 titles until after the PSP Go was announced?

Yeah, that's a lot of good games. Metal Gear Solid and FFVII will definitely be the first things I download when I get my PS3 later this year.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

So, it looks like Final Fantasy Tactics is PSN-bound.

That's cool and all, but I think it's a shame that a majority of people will probably settle for this instead of getting the infinitely superior War of the Lions. OK, maybe the slowdown left a little to be desired, but the fantastic voice acting, beautifully animated cutscenes and great translation more than made up for it. I hope they release WotL in the PSP store, so people have the option of choosing both in the same place.

Re: The Official PlayStation Network Thread

Awsome, I cannot waint to play Tactics and Metal Gear again. PSN is starting to get alot better. I think the GO could be one of the main reason.
