PS2 vs. PS3, not your average debate.

OK, I'm exaggerating a bit, but it does have a pretty massive library.

I believe the final count for the combined number of PS1 and PS2 games in my collection is 256, and that's excluding ones I've rented, sold or still need to get. I started collecting sometime after the PS1 first dropped in 1995, and I still have quite a backlog. So while I'm sure plenty of people would want other games on other systems, I'm pretty sure the average gamer could manage with just a PS2 for a very long time. After all, I game quite a bit, and I still haven't played all these games almost 15 years later.

Quite frankly, if you don't have a PS2, I'd seriously consider going for the 60GB model of the PS3.

The 360 has a good library; don't get me wrong. But if you have a good PC, you can play most of the 360's otherwise exclusive games.

Overall, considering that you haven't played the PS2, I'd have to go with the 20, 60, or 80GB (older model) PS3. While you're getting PS2 games, you might want to pick up a few PS1 games while you're at it, as there are definitely some games on the console that are worth playing 'till even this day.

I have a descent PC and as such the number of exclusives go down to just Nuts and Bolts and Fable2.

Making a little calculation, I'll see if I can pick up a cheap 60gb on Ebay. Living in Europe the other versions are unavailable. If I can get a descent price on a PS3 it will be cheaper than to buy it later. If not I can still buy a PS2.

Hmm... No.

My main objective is still to play those PS2 games, I guess if I can do that and be prepared for the future at an ok cost. I'll have the best of both worlds. I'll tell when I got either console, perhaps some horror story will unfold of me buying something on Ebay.

There's no denying that the PS2 arguably has the most extensive library of all other consoles. The ratio of quantity to quality also happens to be pretty high when taking the core games into account. It's a solid system no matter which way you look at it. In my opinion, it's beginning to age a bit. But that's not to say I'm up to play a few good classics every now and again (which the PS2 has plenty of).

Well there's also Halo 3 (although this might be likely that it'll be ported to the PC), Chromehounds, Crackdown, Blue Dragon, Dead or Alive 4, Gears of War 2 (again, it might be likely that it's going to be ported to the PC), Kameo: Elements of Power, Infinite Undiscovery, Saints Row, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and Tales of Vesperia.

Frankly, your best option is just to get a 60GB off eBay or Craigslist. Buy from a respectable seller and you shouldn't have a problem.

To be honest none of those games really make my heart beat any faster.

I have had a wii since day one and recently decided to buy another console. I choose the ps3 because I wanted a good blueray player. The ps2 does have alot more and better games than the ps2, but that will in time change and I think the solution for you is to buy the 60gb ps3 because it plays ps2 and ps3 games, this way you wont feel like you have to buy a Ps3 when they stop making ps2 games or when a game is made only for the ps3, you have to have. However, the 60gb costs more and can only be foud online; it's the best option because you have a blueray and can play ps1, 2 and 3 games.

So my opinion about the games is declared null and void? I'm not saying they're bad games. I'm just not interested in them. Not everybody has the same taste you know.
Also PC.

PS3 isn't quite cost-effective, given that the console weighs in at about ten times the dough of the PS2, the games similarly exceed PS2 game prices, and the console's library has not yet matured. PS2 is a guaranteed good buy; PS3's potential, while latent, has not really been tested.

Most consoles that were non-nintendo pre-64 weren't worth getting. 64 had an amazing library. I wouldn't say he's been missing out.
However, the generation after that, PS2 took the cake. Amaaaazing console.

Technically, the N64 came out a year later.. or somewhere close. PSOne was 1995, while N64 was 1996.

The SNES was simply amazing. It's, by far, the best console ever made. It's beautifully god-like.

Agreed. PS2 doesn't come close to its awesomeness, but it's closer than most consoles.
