Only a select few of the 3D Sonics can truly be labeled as "really bad." I wouldn't put SA, SA2, Heroes, Secret Rings, or even Unleashed into that category.
Flawed is a much better term, since all of the 3D Sonic games have flaws, some serious, and others which can slightly be ignored. For example, I think the camera and control in Sonic Heroes needed serous polishing, and the game needed less "beat-em-up" sections, but overall I still enjoyed the experience. Secret Rings had some parts where the controls weren't catered to the level design and other parts where Sonic Team made some bad decisions with the on-rails component, but overall I still found that game to be some of the most fun I've had in the last few years.
It's less about reverting back to "classic Sonic" and more about fixing the flaws that have already presented themselves in the 3D games. If Sonic Team had released a sequel to Sonic Heroes which fixed the wonky camera, got rid of the team aspect, and tightened up the controls, it would pretty much be Sonic 2 in 3D. But, Sonic Team didn't do that, and no one has thus far experienced a "completely satisfying all the way through" 3D Sonic game, so they think it's impossible for Sonic Team to make one, even though it truly isn't. The solution is right in front of them, and they're merely not seeing it.
And even after saying all this, I don't view Sonic & the Black Knight as a misstep. In fact, it marks the first time in a while where Sonic Team has actually stuck to a basic formula from a previous game rather than just throwing it out for an all-new formula.
