So EGM is dead, and so is 1UP for the most part

By now I'm sure that most of you have heard that EGM has been discontinued as a result of UGO buying out 1UP, which is disappointing on its own. But what's even more heartbreaking is the fact that pretty much every 1UP personality that you may have come to know and love via things like the 1UP Show, Broken Pixels or one of the many podcasts, has been laid off.

Here's a list of those who will no longer be working for the 1UP Network:

Adrian Frieg
Amy Mishra
Amy Moran
Andrea Garcia
Andrew Fitch
Andrew "Skip" Pfister
Anthony Gallegos
Cesar Quintero
Christina Rosa
CoyLou Steel
Derek Chinn
Doug Parsons
Eric Ellis
Giancarlo Varanini
Greg Ford
James "Milkman" Mielke
Jason Bertrand
Jason Wilson
Jervilyn Jaramillo
Justin Frechette
Leslie Gelfand
Marci Yamaguchi
Matt Chandronait
May Tong
Meredith Stowe
Michael Donahoe
Monique Convertito
Ndubuisi Madu
Nick Suttner
Norris Boothe
Philip Kollar
Rey Serrano
Robert Bowen
Rosemary Pinkham
Ryan O'Donnell
Ryan Scott
Shane Bettenhausen
Simon Cox
Tammy Ross
Tipler Ubbelohde

This is a sad day, especially because I think the 1UP Yours podcast featured some of the best discussions about video games in the entire industry. I was really sad when Gerstmann was let go from GameSpot, and I'm feeling similar emotions here, but on a far greater scale. I have read EGM since I was a kid, and followed OPM for almost a decade, and loved the fact that I could hear some of those journalists speaking their minds in one place outside of print media. 1UP has definitely been my favourite plays for gaming news, reviews and commentary since it started, but all these people gone, it's just not the same. It has the same name, but the heart and soul is no longer there.

I just hope these people find new and better places to work. I know I'll be following some of them, though I fear some of them might get lost in the fray.

Re: So EGM is dead, and so is 1UP for the most part

Hmm, well I used to love EGM back in the day, but lately the issues just started sucking. With tons of ads, few articles and then reviews, compared to back then when they used to be full of good articles and three times as big as they are now. So, r.i.p. since I did love the mag, but I could care less with how egm ended up in the end.

They're terminating the 1up Radio Network? THE source of the most interesting gamin discussions on the internet?
This is beyond unforgivable, I hope the site crashes and burns.

I saw this last night. It's really upsetting to see your favorite website being for all intents and purposes shut down.

Interesting to see Garnet Lee wasn't released. Nevertheless, I'll be following whatever happens to Shane Bettenhausen the most. I'm sure some kind of new website is going to come out of all of this.

And why the hell have I not heard of UGO or its parent company before last night?

Damn it, must be horrible for the people that have lost their jobs, it will probably be nearly impossible for them to find new ones as well : /.

Anyone know how many people worked at 1up?

Because they aren't a gaming company? : P (Hearst aren't anyway, UGO are just nobodies)

Well, I'll be following what happens to the 1up members, but in the meantime, it's all about The Giant Bombcast.

No more Broken Pixels? This really is a sad day for internet and gaming. 1up used to be a great site too. Damn you, more-popular-for-no-real-reason, IGN!

Some of the ex-1up dudes recorded some stuff for a podcast when they were drunk apparently.

The Bombcast can be pretty good, I like Jeff and most of his friends from Gamespot, Brad Shoemaker and Alex Navarro in particular.

You know what would really be amazing? If they got Greg Kasavin to come on one of these days.

Re: So EGM is dead, and so is 1UP for the most part

^ Greg's easily one of the coolest dudes in gaming, but I would guess it would be pretty difficult given that he was both a former journalist (for Gamespot, no less) and now a game designer, so to say. There's probably a lot of legal crap that keeps him from being very vocal about this kind of stuff.

As for 1UP, I've been kind of indifferent about, but I see no reason for them to stop stuff like the Podcasts or other discussion groups. 1UP was one of the best gaming sites for features and articles, so it's definitely unfortunate that they have to lose all of that. EGM I could care less about.

Well, he could talk about things other than games he has a part in, couldn't he?

Are you kidding? The Giant Bomb is awesome. I don't get your hatred for Gerstman. Was it his Twilight Princess score or something?

Yeah, probably. It'd be awesome.

He's a crappy analyst. You realize he gave Mortal Kombat vs. DC a perfect score, right?

Of course his widespread hatred started with the TP review, because the piece was absolutely terrible and he had a pretty obvious bias against the game going into it. The score wasn't the real problem looking back on it.

Yeah, Gerstmann and Giant Bomb are great. And his Twilight Princess score was generous.

The podcasts have all been canceled. Plus, the personalities of the staff are what made them so great. The only big-hitter who wasn't laid off was Garnet Lee, and he's not quite enough to save a new podcast all by himself.

Oh, I wasn't trying to argue that the Podcasts are staying. I meant that I don't agree with them being removed.
