Yeah, so, Dragon Quest X is going to be for Wii

I played the really old ones.

I hate most JRPGs because, you know, they're the same games over and over. I hate every Final Fantasy except Final Fantasy 2, and the only other JRPGs I can think of that I like are Pokemon, Mother, and Paper Mario/Mario RPG/Mario & Luigi.

What about Final Fantasy VI, and Chrono Trigger?

If you're referring to DQ, then definitely give VIII a chance. You'll find it to be way better than the older titles. You can pick it up used for around ten bucks which is absurdly cheap for such an excellent game.

And, hey, if you hate it, you can toss it from a bus window or something and you won't lose much money at all.

I love Japan. Developers from there FINALLY seem to care about the Wii, with the whole tidal wave of RPG's coming next year and beyond.
And on top of that tidal wave, the king of JRPG's, Dragon Quest, is surfing.

Looks like I'm going to have to play DQVIII soon! Seems like most of you really liked it here, so I'll pick it up soon!

If you like JRPGs, you must go and buy it immediately. You'll love it. I'm willing to bet money on it. Consider it a very wise investment!

Oh, and like I said earlier, you can get it cheap used or new. ^___^

Couldn't have put it better. Honestly, the older games are the exact same thing over and over again, with a slightly new scenario, judging from my experiences with IV and VII. The older games are overflowing with charm, but the basic gameplay is so repetitive and so stale. Now, I've heard V is potentially the best in the series, and it was the first SNES Dragon Quest, so I still have got my hopes up for that, but if it's the same only decent experience that Dragon Quest IV DS was, I'm going to be disappointed.

VIII modernized the series enough to be fantastic. Here's hoping IX and X continue this trend.

Well, I'll probably pick it up if it appears around here. Never played a Dragon Quest game though... I dunno what's with the lack of RPGs around here @_@

Pokemon isn't the same game over and over? They are probably more samey than any dragon quest games.

And it seems strange to me that you can like Mother and Pokemon so much when they are both pretty heavily influenced by Dragon Quest.

I didn't say Pokemon wasn't samey. It follows the trend of most JRPGs in the context, however, it brings a little more to the table overall. Mostly freedom and strategy. Pokemon almost feels less like an RPG and more like a life-sim game in ways.

Mother is a parody of it- one which I find to be very well done, and subtle enough for my liking, all while maintaining it's own, somewhat interesting storyline.


Pokemon, I already explained. (Yes, there are the DQM games, which are actually fairly fun, however, it just feels like Pokemon has that subgenre a bit more defined than a minor spinoff series ever could.)

Well said.

The Mother series is completely non-standard. It borrows the basics of its battle system from Dragon Quest, but everything else about it is completely different than what you'd expect from a JRPG.

I could easily see someone enjoying Mother and not enjoying Dragon Quest.
