Hearts torn in Gears of War

Well, I've just completed the first 2/3 of Gears 2 in campaign mode. Never before has such a badass video game tugged ever so slightly at my heartstrings. The love and loss is so real it's unreal. Those of you who wish to see the game firsthand, do not read the spoiler. It spoils a LOT!

Spoiler (Highlight to read):
In the second Act, the Locust tortured your good friend from the Pendulum Wars, Tai, to an extent that his face is vacant and empty, with chains hanging from the raw flesh of his back. Delta attempts to save him, and opens the cell. Throwing him a shotgun to defend himself, everyone looks away for just a moment, before the gun caucks. Marcus looks back, and Tai has the gun brandished to his own head. "Tai!?" *Boom* "Nooo!!!" The emotion created by this event is immense. Tai, whom saved your life countless times in the Pendulum Wars and likewise, falls before your eyes by his own trigger finger.

And later in act 4, Dom finally finds his wife, who had been locked in a cell. Jack rips the door and Maria comes falling into Dom's arms, beautiful as he remembers. But it was a daydream. Marcus snaps him out of it, and he looks back, to his horror, to a malnourished, scarred, empty-expressioned shadow of her former self. Her hair has receded and she is incredibly thin. Dom cannot even get her to acknowledge him, and... sobbing his apology and promises that he loves her... euthanizes her with the Boltok. All we see is Marcus walking away and hear a gunshot.

If anyone has played this far yet... how did you react to these events? They were so sad... Any anecdotes to share, how it made you think?

Re: Hearts torn in Gears of War

I watched the part involving Dom's wife on Youtube because I couldn't wait to get the game.
Seriously, I almost thought of robbing the place XD
I was...shocked of the turnout. To be honest, I thought his wife WAS the Locust queen (Myrrah = Maria sound very similar)
But this was such an unexpected twist...and a heartbreaking one.

but the other sad part is that once again
Spoiler (Highlight to read):
Carmine dies again

Really, I was starting to like him after his
Spoiler (Highlight to read):
brother Anthony

Then again, why so serious?

Re: Hearts torn in Gears of War

To be honest the part with Tai is more of a "Holy ****" moment than a sad one.

Spoiler (Highlight to read):
He was the toughest and nicest guy in the COG who could "survive anything" (hell, a thousand-tonne drilling platform couldn't take him down) and there he is, mind and body broken by the Locusts. Really makes the Locusts seem like something to be feared.

I honestly think they should've introduced all these new characters in Gears 1 (Or even an expansion or something) - you hardly knew them, but were expected to be emotionally attached.

The campaign as a whole was ****ing incredible, though.

Solink: Anthony was way better than his brother - at least he died a hero's death, not like some clumbsy-ass mother****er.

Re: Hearts torn in Gears of War

I acknowledge all the moments created in Gow2. But I can't help but find the characters silly, the dialog hilarious, I just....

.....I really hate this game from the position of the art direction in general.

Re: Hearts torn in Gears of War

Ah! I almost forgot about Ben. Yeah, I think B. Carmine's tragedy was more significant than Anthony's. I mean, he was just being careless. But Dom constantly mentioning snipers around Ben was kinda funny.

Ben: "See, that's why you guys should wear your helmets."
Dom: "Yeah, but it's harder to see snipers."
Marcus: "Dom... Cool it."
