Question about DS backwards gaming

This is a fast question, I know GBA plays GB and GBC games but, does the DS play GB and GBC games because it can also play GBA games?

It only plays DS and GBA. GB and GBC games do not work.

You see, since the DS uses hardware emulation, this would require more processors and make the DS more expensive.

So you have either two options:

1. Use a hacking device to put GB and GBC ROMs and emulators on the DS. Technically illegal, and you're not going to learn how to do so here, but it's cheap and fairly easy to do.
2. Just use a GBC and DS combo, guaranteeing perfect Nintendo handheld compatibility. GBCs are pretty cheap nowadays, so it's worth games like Link's Awakening or the other Zeldas.

I'm not into doing illegal things. I don't own any GB or GBC games, I was just wondering if the DS played them so I could go buy some but I guess not.

It would have been great if Nintendo added that, though.

I actually had an idea that if Nintendo had a new DS model (with memory) they could have people download GB & GBC games via the Virtual Console and transfered onto your DS. Of course, even if they don't have it on a future DS system, I wouldn't be surprised if they will start placing portable games on the VC (not only is it a matter of time before we get all the games on the system, but people may want to play some retro games they haven't played in ages).
