Dragon Quest IX Hitting Early 2009 In Japan!!

It seems as if Dragon Quest IX will be hitting the DS early 2009 in Japan. Dragon Quest IX has been on a long on hiatus from making public appearances, and it has only recently been revealed that the game will be making a playable appearance at this year's TGS.

This is absolutely awesome news for all Dragon Quest fans, for all RPG fans in general. I loved Dragon Quest VIII and have been eagerly anticipating where they would be taking the series from there!

Is this the one where you can have a child and as the game progresses they get older? I can't remember which one that was but I know it's coming out soon and I'm looking forward to that one.

This is the new game in the series! You're thinking of the Dragon Quest V remake.

It's about frickin' time! This is awesome news. I just hope Square Enix make good on their promise to start releasing games in both Japan and North America within the same time frame, because I'll go nuts if I have to wait another bajillion years to play this.

I hope we see a bit more of it at TGS or something. Maybe part of that Level-5 event will be a DQIX blowout? It's pretty sad that it was announced two years ago and we've still only seen video of a battle system they're not using anymore.

I just want traditional Dragon Quest gameplay. As long as that's not watered down, I'll be happy.

Damn straight. This is the most reassuring thing I've seen about the game.

I'm going to try the remake of DQ4. If I enjoy that, I'll get this game when it comes to the US.

About ****in' time they show some news on this game. **** is going to be so cash.

To whet my appetite for IX, I've finally got a hold of Dragon Warrior (Quest) VII, and am now going to attempt to stave off blindness while I play through. Seriously, 7 looks horrendous.

I've already played a large chunk of IV, however, I do feel like an ass for taking VII over VIII, especially with how the game's going so far. I figured I'd get around to dealing with VIII sometime after my conquest of VII, and by then, IX would be close to being out. I still plan to follow that plan, but right now, my eyes are paying for it.

What Is The Story In Dragon Quest IX About Anyway?

Angels, a world tree, and (presumably) delicious Goddess fruit.



Dragon Quest IX starts off in a kingdom of angels and it appears that the user created protagonist is one of the bunch. These angels aspire to move into God’s land, but before they can pack their bags they need to get the Goddess fruit. This fruit isn’t something you can purchase at your local supermarket. It only grows from the World Tree and only after you empower it with Star Auras. How do you get Star Auras? Help out (read: complete quests) for the people living below.







A few of the early quests are described too. In the beginning of the game you get to fetch magic spring water, slay ten Tentsuku monsters, and steal an item from a Metal Hunter for a fellow thief. You get these quests by talking to townsfolk and completing them can unlock more quests. Unlike the other Dragon Quest games it sounds like Dragon Quest IX is going to have a bunch of open ended mini-quests. After you complete a quest you can check it off on your handy dandy Quest List log which acts like an in game achievement list.

If it really is like an MMO, this could be really disappointing. Hopefully it's just the sidequests, a la Final Fantasy XII.

I liked the hunts and stuff quite a bit in FFXII, dunno how I feel about it in a Dragon Quest game though.

Hopefully they don't put too much emphasis on it.

Ughhh. I wouldn't mind stuff like that as a bunch of side quests, but if it doesn't have a traditional story, I'll be really disappointed.
