In-Game XMB Coming in 2.40!!

According to this story here, along with many other members of the press and industry on NeoGAF.

We've finally received word that the long awaited, and much rumored, PlayStation 3 Firmware Update 2.40 is indeed the real deal and is said to be coming relatively soon. Many of the most requested features, such as a universal friends list and in-game messaging will be included, in addition to a few rather nice surprises (*cough*soundtracks*cough*). We definitely can't divulge all of the details, but trust us, it's coming.

We aren't yet 100% sure of the actual release date, but all signs point to sometime in June. We're guesing that Sony will probably detail 2.40 in the coming weeks.

Basically, for any of those who are wondering, In-Game XMB will pretty much enable PS3 users to send cross-game invites to each other, send messages to each other, have cross-game chat, see what your friends are playing, etc., while playing a game. This is pretty much the one last thing that Xbox Live has over the PSN. Come 2.40, the systems will be close to even footing.

Amazing news! I was beginning to think we wouldn't see the in-game XMB until Home came out (in other words.. never? lol). This will really help make the PSN much better, and close to on par with Live. The one thing holding it back will always be the slow servers that some games choose to use, I just wish they all used Sony servers.

Just one more step to becoming more like the X-box, which lets face it, has the best online.

There was a video floating around of the XMB from a guy who was testing Bioshock for the PS3 it was pulled down though.

So word from the insiders now is that the 2.40 update has been delayed, possibly to July, which sucks, due to last minute bugs and glitch fixes. Sure, I don't exactly want a bricked system, but this really sucks.

Well, we've gone this long without it so we'll survive. If it gets delayed again I'll just lump it in there with Home and assume it's never coming though.

Two to three weeks is a lot better than half a year.

But I was just hoping it would come in time for Metal Gear Solid 4.

A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. So it seems that the update is right around the corner. I heard about 2.36 coming earlier this week, and honestly, I wish we could just wait for 2.40. NEXT WEEK PLEASE! (Though it will probably be two weeks, if they didn't want to be excessive.)

Worst case scenario:we have to wait another month for it to come out.

From what I've noticed Sony seems to release an update within a couple weeks (sometimes the next day!) after making an update announcement. Hopefully the trend continues.

edit: I just turned my PS3 on and got the update message so 2.36 is here already. I can't wait for 2.40, it's going to be awesome.

Awesome, this is a good week/weeks for me if this comes out soon. The cagney update for Burnout is coming out July 10th which is going to be cool as well.

I hope it comes out Tuesday so I can try it out on my day off.
