Not exactly MGS4-related, but too good to pass up:

MGS Technical Advisor Busted for Shipping Weapons Parts

Damn, does this count as simulating a "war economy" too? Gamepolitics picked up an item out of Tacoma, Wash. that a former technical advisor on the original Metal Gear Solid faces a federal charge of attempted parts smuggling. The parts in question are "sophisticated holographic night vision gunsights," bound for Japan.

Capt. Tomoaki Iishiba, a Japanese national who joined the U.S. Military in 1993, faces one count. He basically acquired the sights and then mailed them to others without an export license. The sights cost more than $600 each.

He's scheduled to enter a guilty plea at the end of the month.

Damn, I can't get my parents to agree to get me the Gene Expansion pack, and I don't have a credit card, which I'm certain is needed to buy things on the MGO shop, so I'm missing out on so much, and I still had to deal with the Version Update!

I don't even know if you'd be able to get it if you were allowed. I've been trying to download it since Thursday, but Konami's servers are so awful that I can't even input my credit card information without getting disconnected. Not to mention the fact that I seem to only have a 10 minute window every 4 hours to do so. I wish they would just let PSN handle MGO instead.

According to Kotaku, Konami's servers had a meltdown. That would explain a lot.

I think the servers have been in meltdown since their conception.

From you guys' opinions, is MGS4 user-friendly? As in say, a low to medium learning curve?

I haven't played MGS4 yet, but I've played the other three games. The answer is...

Yes. Way more than the previous games, at least. The controls and gameplay are smooth as butter. Absolutely perfected.

Unless your gaming skills are equilivilant to my dad's, who needed me watching over his shoulder for most of the game. At the beginning, he had so little control over the camera that I actually took the controller, did a series of actions, then went back to where he was before and told him to repeat. It didn't help.

I could swear konami said the servers were up, just ip restricted by the hour. Anyway, mgs4 is pretty easy to learn, and mgo is pretty basic as well. Oh, firsttsurugi, try and get one of those visa giftcards, they do count as a credit card.

How much is the GENE expansion?

It's kind of a rip off running at about $15 I believe.

Yeah, it does feel like a bit of a rip-off. I made an alternate female character and that's all I really like about it. I haven't even been able to try out the new maps because there's never enough people on the expansion servers!

It's pretty user-friendly, although you might be lost with the storyline unless you plan on playing the older titles or reading the free MGS Database.

The gameplay itself is ridiculously polished though. You should be able to function quite well after an hour or two of playing if you've never played a MGS game before.
