A bit late for the bandwagon.

Um. Yes, it does. A canon game is a part of the overall story line. Watch it. It's great.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - The Official Thread

Thanks to Dr. Zaius for the new scans. I'd still get the MGS4 even if the critics were to slate it, and although I would never expect to see damning reviews for Metal Gear, it's always reassuring to know that people are responding well to the game.

What better way to start playing PS3?

I would suggest that you have a look through one of the Metal Gear backstory articles that are doing the rounds at the moment. This game is supposed to bring the Metal Gear story arc to a close, and I think that you'd get more from the game if you went in with a little background on the characters.

There are quite a few Metal Gear games going back yeears and on loads of consoles, so I don't think that the people behind Metal Gear Solid 4 are going to expect people to know the entire backstory. I'm sure that you'd be able to play through the game and have a great time even if you started completely blind. On the first page I think I mentioned the game having flash backs to fill newbies in, so they must be conscious that for many people, this is going to be their first game.

Hope to see you on Metal Gear Online as well.

Hurray! xDDD

I'm trying to get through those videos that you linked to Mr. W - I didn't realise that Portable Ops was so story driven. I thought it was just a collection of individual missions, kind of like the VR ones on the PS1 or something.

Hmm, I don't know if I could even finish one of the PSP games though. From what I've seen of them, it all seems a little claustrophobic, and your view doesn't seem to be too forgiving. Hopefully I'll have the chance to play it for myself and find out though. I'd like to get a PSP at some point, even if it's just to play PS1 games on it. Oh, and watch the digital Metal Gear Solid comic book.

It's a nice find though, thanks for sharing it.

I'm going to buy the first 3* before getting a PS3 & MGS4, it's gonna be a while before I can gather the money for the console anyway. I can't wait.

I wasn't a big fan of Portable Ops. The control scheme was pretty bad and the story was a carbon copy of the first Metal Gear Solid.

I agree with the control scheme part. The story, on the other hand, I'm severely enjoying.

Hmmm, I wonder if the game's main story spans six months? As Naomi hunter said that Snake only had six months to live. Be cool to see Snake aging throught the game.
And it's GUNS of the Patriots not THE GUNS.

I enjoyed the game a lot, though a few of the story elements were kind of cheesy. I also didn't like the fan-service level additions of all the Operation Snake Eater characters. What? Eva double crossed me and is with the Philosophers? Forgive and forget! Let's recruit her!

One of the bigger turn offs for me with the game all together was the lack of voice acting during codec calls. It takes a lot away from the scenes, though it doesn't make them bad at all.

For those wondering about the simplest story digest of Portable Ops, from what I got out of it, is that you find out a bit how the Philosophers relate/become to the Patriots, how Ocelot is involved in both, what happens to the Legacy after Operation Snake Eater, how Big Boss starts to become disenchanted with war, and the significance in the name of "Outer Heaven."

Dr. Zaius, what parts of Portable Ops reminded you of the original Metal Gear Solid?

PS3: Two Characters Revealed for MGS4 (Spoilers!)

Two older characters confirmed for the game. Minor spoilers, I guess, but still excellent to know they are in the game.

Let's hope that Sokolov was the only canonical one, and even that was a serious stretch. Keep in mind that this game wasn't directed by Kojima.

Yeah, that bothered me.

However they never really explain the Philosophers/Patriots connection and in doing so make things pretty damn unbelievable, the same goes for the Ocelot connection, the Legacy doesn't really get focus, I felt the story of Big Boss' disenchantment was horribly done, and that whole Army/Outer aspect was a complete rip-off.

Quote:

Basically the whole story around Gene and him being "the successor". Can anyway say Liquid/Solid? Can't really give a whole lot away here, but the majority of the plot elements surrounding Gene.

They've actually been confirmed for months now, but those are just the first two screenshots.

:0.
Ugh, I almost feel like crying cause it looks like I won't be getting a PS3 for a while. But jeez, this game...its amazing. I haven't even played it, but we all know it is. Why does a PS3 have to cost so much!!

But when I do play this, I know it'll be one of the most memorable play-throughs in my life. Legendary.

That's a good idea, but you should get Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for the GCN. It's a remake for the original and is better in basically every way.
