Hell, I could care less about the gameplay of this game. The only thing I care about is how the story progresses.

EDIT: The US Official Playstation Magazine has given MGS4 a perfect score. Here are some scans from the review.

Like DrZaius1, I'm more concerned with getting through the game and watching the story unfold than anything else.

I'll definetley be playing MGO though. I assume that you were on the Beta, how did you find it?

From what I've read online, it's being slated already, but I really enjoyed it. Even if I never did get to play as Snake.

My only problem with it is the lack of split-screen..

Oh, and thanks for the new scans Dr. Zaius, really appreciated. :]

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - The Official Thread

PSM Italy gives Metal Gear Solid a perfect score:

Quote:
Graphics: 10/10
Sound: 10/10
Gameplay: 9.5/10
Longevity: 9.5/10
Technical: 9.5/10
Overall: 10
Shoddy translation reveals this:

Quote:
Positive points: Freedom of action and tactics....
....in realistic and crowded scenarios
Enemies or friends? Decide the IA
Graphics remarkable, sound great.
The final step of a epochal saga
Negative points: More movie than game
Dutch OPM gives Metal Gear Solid 4 a 96/100, this same score they gave Grand Theft Auto 4:

Quote:
Graphics: 18/20
Music/Sound: 20/20
Gameplay: 58/60
Overall: 96/100
In addition to the usual:

Quote:
Positive points: Worthy finale of the series, perfect camera, controls and sound, epic storyline, weapons
Negative points: Graphics could be a bit better, story too complex for people who are not into the series
...the person who reported the score scribbled down several comments on what he saw:

Quote:
- You can play music on the portable mp3 player snake has from the PS3's hard disc.
- They couldn't say anything about the story we didn't know yet (had to sign a paper), but they said that you should get the game already just for the story.
- Through the game, Snake acts like a soldier who welcomes death. He has a 'death wish'.
- They ended their first playthrough with 300 kills.
- The bossfight against octopus takes place in a South American labratory. She can disguise herself as several objects and figures.
- They discribe Raging Raven as a human bomber who constantly takes away your stragatical advantages by destroying your places to hide.
- Crying Wolf is very fast and has a rail gun that can could shoot snake to a pile of ash really quick.
- Besides the B&B unit, there is also the chance to finally finish of some very hard to defeat enemies from the previous games.
- Cutscenes are amazing, they especially mention the ending epilogue which is (litteraly translated) brainbreaking.
- After the first playthrough, some new goodies and new but extremely expensive parts become available in Drebin's shop.
- There is again a return of several special gameplay and story aspects from the previous games. They especially occur during the return to Shadow Moses Island.
- Completely original, but not a 100% perfect, is actually only Snake's mission in an unnamed Eastern Europe country.
- The story goes about a choice between the systematical 'force to' (couldn't find a better word to translate this (opleggen)) order or to keep the free will in every individual citizen or soldier.
- They think MGS4 is a bullseye as a game. GTAIV may have a longer playability, but on many aspects MGS4 is coming out. The suspens of the story, the perfect controls, the amazing sound directions and of course the emotion, it's hard to find all this in one game.
- The biggest power of the game is the biggest negative point, if you liked the long, complex story of the previous MGS's, you will love MGS4. But if you didn't like it, you won't like MGS4 purely as an action game (there are better games for that).

Closing Comment: The most important thing we can say about MGS4 is that we would have peace with it if this would be the final chapter of the series. For a game that had to carry so many expections, that seems the biggest compliment too us. An emotional, intense, and worthy closure, especially for the real fans

Going forward, for people like Vega and others who are going through a media blackout on this title, make sure to mark all spoilers from this point on.

I just saw Indiana Jones this afternoon, and just the presence of the KGB throughout the movie got me so hyped for Metal Gear Solid 4!

Strange, I thought that spoiler tags would have been copied from the site I lifted that off of. Oh well, I'll double check next time. Nothing all too major, though.

Haha. Apparently MGS4 has cutscenes that are 90 minutes long. Yeah, cutscenes.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - The Official Thread

According to the Gamepro reviewer for the game, that's false.

DailyGamesNews.com: Gamepro Kills MGS4 90 Minute Cut-scene Rumor

That's a shame, because any cutscene that could reach 90 minutes would most definitely have to be that "Return of the King-ish" ending. There's obviously an ample amount of gameplay in the game, so the cutscenes can be as lengthy as Kojima wants, as long as they have a decent amount of development in them (as in no excess MGS2-style codec bull****).

Back on the hard news front, a promotional soundtrack for Metal Gear Solid $ is available to download online, and here's the link:

Metal Gear Solid 4 downloads

Call Me Hal is a pretty amazing pick, as well as the MGS4 trailer/Smash Bros. blend Love Theme (Brawl Meets Suicidal Snake Mix).

If anyone, for some strange reason, hasn't played the godly original Metal Gear Solid, a polished video has been released of the entire game for those who don't like interacting with interactive film:

Metal Gear Solid 1 storyline videos recap in 6 hours (or 20 minutes) - VideoGamesBlogger

Back of the PAL box may be suggesting that there is a mandatory 4.5 GB install:

Oh yeah, and all you kids who live in or around New York City get the chance to run off to the Virgin Megastore in Times Square and get your copy signed by none other then Hideo Kojima himself:

Yeah, I had seen all that. W00T 4.5GB install!

All the soundtrack pieces come from The US official site, which has been overhauled. Beware of spoilers. Those were the one thing keeping me from the music that Dr. Zaius listed. (Tanks 4 the links.)

Edit: I wonder if the install size is legit, if only because it's a display only box.

Gamepro has reviewed Metal Gear Solid 4 (giving it 5 of 5 stars) and compared the game to Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, and Grand Theft Auto III in terms of future influence.

According to GamePro, the Playstation 3 finally gets it's savior, Kojima gets his masterpiece, and gamers get one of the best games to grace any platform. Ever.

Yeah, I actually don't think I've even bought a console game since Twilight Princess, let alone anticipated one. And if any game is going to live up to the anticipation, it's MGS4. I will probably buy a PS3 for this game alone.

Re: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - The Official Thread

Holy cow at that review, Dr. Zaius.

Attention Anyone Interested in Metal Gear Solid 4!
If you haven't played Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, and don't plan on doing so in the future, you MUST MUST MUST watch this video of all the story scenes (not just cutscenes) in the game!

This game's story is amazing. In no way is this a portable call-in. I'm about half-way through the episodes (this is the best, IE, you aren't missing out in any non-cutscene parts), and I am now so psyched for MGS4 it's not even funny. This game is amazing. Holy crap.

Note watching this does require playing Metal Gear Solid 3 and it's utter amazing greatness that is a story.

Oh, and EGM didn't get a chance to review Metal Gear Solid 4 this month, but they did have this to say:
Quote:
For their non-MGS4 review here is basically what each reviewer says:

Jeremy:

- MGS4 represents the truest expression of the "Metal Gear" concept the world will ever see.
- Bittersweet that the series is over but at least it goes out in style.
- Controls a welcome addtion but he wishes for a cover system.
- Different approach to the game you dont have to be stealthy if you dont want to, infact many big firefights dont allow for stealth.
- Environments larger than MGS3
- You will find out what "La-li-lu-le-lo" means.
- Usually played stealthly in MGS games but killing people is so effective in this game that he got a high kill count.
- Having Drebin on call for ammo makes resource management less of an issue, also offers ridiculous number of possible weapon choices. But best to trick out a few favorites.

Andrew:

- New camera is a relief.
- Didn't mind the lack of dedicated cover system, to busy rushing into battle and getting Drebin points
- Game really encourages run and gun approach, but you can still play both ways.
- New gear and systems like octo camo and MK2 are great.

Matt:

- Played game on easy and hardest mode. On easy you can run around and not fear anything.
- On harder modes he really found the need for cover, wished the expanded the wall hug system they have.
- Other than that new control scheme does a great job, but does not feel it matches those of Splinter Cell.

Shane:

- Loved Act 1's unpredictable pacing, it ditches the usual hand holding tutorial.
- "The game contsnatly toys with your expectations right before exceeding them"
- Commends MGS4 "shockingly well-realized environments"
- "As always, Kojima productions dedication to stuffing the game with oddles of minutiae elevates the artistry to a level rarely reached in gaming."

Shane loved it a lot clearly.

I haven't played Portable Ops, since I lack a PSP... but is there any word on whether or not the storyline ties in with MGS4? I would hate to be missing something.
