Devil May Cry Series

I was going to save this and make it more thorough of a starting thread, but impatience is an annoying setback, unfortunately.

Anyway, it was really hard to find many games like Devil May Cry in the beginning. There weren't many hack-n-slash games back then that were really that great and worth the time, but when DMC came out for the PS2, it was what many gamers who loved the action genre were waiting for. With an interesting story and character - a bad-ass devil hunter named Dante, who we learn halfway through the game is half demon and son of Sparda, a dark and gothic theme that fit the game exceptionally well, and unbelievable action, it was one of the greatest games during that time.

But then, there came Devil may Cry 2. So many gamers were hyped for this game, but it only brought disappointment to us all. It was less refined than the first, the design was bad, and the difficulty was too low. Also, it led away from the main story a bit, which is always bad. Plus, Dante's personality was totally different from his bad-ass, trash-talking self from the first game. It kinda made everyone think (including myself, although I haven't played it in its entirety) that the sequel ruined it all, and it did.

But that changed when Devil may Cry 3: Dante's Awakening was released. Gamers were finally happy again, with the superb graphics, an unbelievable soundtrack, and the action that was tweaked to perfection. There were so many different styles gamers could choose to use in combat, with more to gain later on as you progress. Dante also was tweaked in regards to character, gaining back his bad-assness from the first (well, it was a prequel). The game's cut-scenes and action is something Hollywood could learn from when they want to make a great action flick sometime in the future (yeah, sure..). It was the best hack-n-slash game anyone could ask. But what many wondered was "Could it get any better from here?"

Well, it depends, really...

Devil May Cry 4 was not better than DMC3 in any way at all, but it is in the same league. Thi time, instead of playing as the cool Dante, you play as a young Nero, who possesses a devil arm and is also a devil hunter. With his sword, Red Queen, and his dual-barrel revolver, Blue Rose, he takes on hordes of demons, and chases down Dante who killed the High Priest of Fortuna.

This game was meant to be an introduction to the series for anyone new to Devil may Cry, still attaining the appeal from the fans out there. Personally, I feel this game did just that, and a bit more. The combos weren't the greatest, but it still was awesome and it required more timing and good handling with the controller. What I was hoping for in this game was different styles like in DMC3, but at least you get it in the second half of the game (with an extra one nearing the end). The soundtrack was as good, if not better, as the third.

So what will Capcom hold in store for us for the next one? Will they even make another Devil May Cry game? I hope so, and when they do, it better be more kick ass than all the DMC games combined.

So, discuss.

There's no doubt that I really like DMC4, the the only problem I have with it is with the enemies. In terms of design they are way better then those of 3, the only problem is they don't really give you good audio cues. I mean the cues are still there, they just aren't broadcast as well as they were in one and three. That being said, some of Nero's upgrades annoy me as well. Many times I've wanted to do a helm breaker(forgot the DMC4 name) and ended up doing an air streak instead. Also Nero tends to target the wrong enemy. Last complaint is the saviour, I really dislike that fight.

Anyway, as a whole I love the series with number one being my favorite. DMC1 is still really the only DMC game that really gives me problems in difficulty. DMC should return to being that hard, enemies that can kill you in two hits, and you with only one healing item.

The Devil May Cry is my favorite series right behind Metal Gear. Though DMC4 for me felt way to easy even on the higher difficulties compared to DMC3 and DMC1. I guess this is where i'd have to agree with squall24 in that the series should return to the level of difficulty presented in both 1 and 3.

Yeah, DMC4 is pretty easy. I'm S ranking almost all of the missions without even trying. I think the game could have presented a bigger challenge if the Devil Bringer was nerfed. That thing is way too strong. Dante's problem is his stinger and on-the-fly style change. If they took those things and nerfed them it might balance it a little more.

The next game should be like Ninja Gaiden's master ninja mode just for fun.

Hahaha so many people who played DMC4 and got used to that level would cry. But yes, I agree they should have nerfed Devil Bringer and Dante in general. Dante in the missions was like taking a heavy machine gun to water pistol fight. Nero not so much.

I only liked the 1st and 3rd games then I got bored with them. If you want a brilliant game (which I prefer to DMC) then you must play... God of War 1 and 2 on the Playstation 2, obviously this does also depend on your age because it's an 18.
It's very similar to DMC

Guess why they're so similar...

Spoiler (Highlight to read):
The developers of God of War based their game's action ideas off of Devil May Cry. That's right, Devil May Cry was praised by David Jaffe (I think that's his name), the director of the Development team, so much so that they decided to incorporate DMC's action into a mythological setting, with more violence. God of War was also compared with Devil May Cry when talking about the game's action.

So, in a sense, you still prefer Devil May Cry XP

No GoW for me, its too much of a button masher. I'm hoping the PSP eventually gets a DMC game of its own.

DMC 3 is my favorite hack'n'slash of all time. I don't care about the cheesiness, it's just so awesome to be able to knock an enemy into the air with your sword, and then decide how they die from there. The difficulty is off the charts, which made it great for me. DMC 4 was a step back, though. Nero was a nice addition, but it was much easier.

^ I think the difficulty is in the controls. The controls are really smooth, but when it comes to charging Nero's sword and continuing your chain of attacks, that's where it becomes more challenging.

The Devil Bringer was a nice addition, as well. Using the Devil bringer just made it a whole lot enjoyable (and I love using enemies as a shield).

^The controls are much nicer, and the Devil Bringer is awesome. However, when I can get S-rankings on every mission through 9 (I rented the game, so that's when I returned it) on Devil Hunter difficulty, I don't think the reduced difficulty is coming from better control (also, I never really used the charge function in his sword. I killed things quickly enough without it).

I don't find geting my gauge to fill mid-attack to be all that hard. In fact it really helps on DMD on enemies who shield a lot.

I'm at the end of the third one and it is awesome it is leaps and bounds better than DMC2 and its up there with the first game. But it is quite a challenge.

As it stands, the results for me are:

1. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
2. Devil May Cry 4
3. Devil May Cry
4. Devil may Cry 2

Does anyone know why No. 3 is the only one with a subtitle? That's the one thing I don't get, as all the other games are simply "Devil May Cry __".

I guess they just felt like it. Probably no real reason, unless it was something like informing people a bit what the game was about or something.

Oh well, DMC4 was way too easy. There might be hope for it though. The PC version is coming out and it's supposed to have a harder difficulty mode:Legendary Dark Knight mode. It will put more enemies on screen and make them tougher. Turbo mode is returning too. Hopefully capcom will release this as DLC for the consoles, as I'm not buying another DMC for PC, number 3 taught me my lesson on that.

Well, if you want a challenge on DMC4, why not try Hell and Hell mode? I finished DMD on DMC4 pretty easy, but HAH mode is pretty damn though. I'm currently on level 12 with Dante.

They should take out the gold free orbs they give you. One hit should mean one hit. And beating HaH gives you nothing but an accomplishment, not really worth it IMO.

As sqaull said, with all those Gold Orbs they give you even HAH is pretty easy. :/

Try not using ant items at all, and let's see if it'll be as easy as with items. XP

Now that's what you'd call challenging. Heck, that's why I have like 99,999 red orbs. I don't buy any items.

You don't have a choice whether or not you use it. The game gives you 2 gold orbs per mission and activates them automatically whenever you get hit.

And I hope you forgot a 9 because 99,999 isn't that much. After I bought my purple and blue orbs I have about 400,000 red orbs on me.

What, they do? I never got any gold orbs automatically, and I never use them. They always ask me whether or not I want to use them or not.

And yeah, you're right, I forgot another 9. I realized that when I started up the game yesterday and re-counted. XP
