What a crap name.
Does anyone else hate the name they chose for the next gen Nintendo system?

Not only is it stupid (Wii, as in two people playing together... except for the fact that you usually have more than 2 players) but it actually killed someone. Yes, because they chose the name Wii, a mother died.

Good going, Nintendo! If you chose a name that wasn't so stupid, those kids would actually have a mother.

Also, a girl thinks I'm a freak because of the name.

The story's a bit old. You can't blame Nintendo for what happened to that woman. I lay blame on the radio station for negligence and what can only be described as exploitation for an oversold product that a Mother really, really wanted to get her children.

Anyway, this is besides the point.

The name "Wii" stuck in many a throat when it was announced. Everyone had their heart set on the Nintendo Revolution and to be honest, I would have preferred it to stay as such. But not forgetting that the Gamecube was once Project Dolphin, I suppose Revolution was just to cover the future projections of Nintendo's new console, with Wiimotes, Mii's, Wiikends, Wiik tea, Wiils and Piinis.

And so forth.

Some people have a hard time explaining the Wii. I don't think anyone can really explain it. Except Shigeru Miyamoto, but that's okay. Wii is a lifestyle and a way of thinking. And it's not about the graphics and popularity. Although, some graphics would be nice. But it's a voice that says Here I am and **** you if you don't want to play me.

And one of these games is gonna save the world. And that means Wii can save the world, all of us together. And the chicks are great.

But what it all comes down to is that indefinable thing: the buzz. And the chicks, wrist cramps, and the whatever; all of that is an offshoot of the buzz. And the buzz leads to good things.

I know who you really are... but what do you have against me? It's not like I'm really angry when I complain, I'm laughing at it, mostly. I use forums to express my anger, because if I do it in real life, people will think I'm mean.

I don't see how you can reasonably blame Nintendo for that contest. Unless of course you have some sort of evidence that it was their idea.

And the name has caused a lot of raised eyebrows when it was announced, but it's really quite clever- it signifies how the Wii is meant to be for everybody and stuff.

If Nintendo just didn't choose a stupid name, the contest would have never been made.

I know you could say that for anything, like the butterfly effect, etc (I dunno, never seen that movie, but I've seen that Scrubs episode with the butterfly), but this has an actual real solid connection.

Also, I hate this quote from the creator...

I think Wii is pretty nice, but here in Sweden you cant really say Wii in a sentence really fast, you most stop at wii to rponnance it right.

Source on quote? Anyway, that was hardly the point. It was a small comment for gentle humour. I doubt the Nintedo executives were sitting high up in Nintendo HQ giggling about people playing with their Wii's. If they were though, I want a job with them.

It's not Nintendo's fault, its hers and the radio station's fault.

Also, the name is okay, but it's meant to appeal to everyone. I still think the best name of a game consoles ever was Nintendo 64. I don't know, I just like it. Whenever I think of N64 I think of OoT/MM and the legendary console they were made for.

What? So is it a problem or not? I don't consider it as such.

And, even more so, I was merely pointing out that the problem meant to be discussed in this thread is both ridiculous and old.

TottEDIT: Sloths Rule, it's stupid. I could start a similar thread about the Xbox. Why is there an "X" in the name, when it's not shaped like an X? Wii doesn't mean "we" in the normal sense of the word. It's simply means that it's a console suitable for everyone.

This thread is, like I said, ridiculous. They're not gonna change the name, so why ***** about it? If it sounds stupid to you then just stop using it.

Meh, when it was first announced I thought it was a stupid, silly name. Now that it's been out for a while, Wii has kinda stuck and I don't hate it anymore. To be completely honest there's a lot more wrong with the Wii right now than just it's name. : /

People want the real reason it's called Wii? Here it is..

So Nintendo was trying to think up a new name for the Revolution. One of the development guys asked offhandedly why they even needed to change the name. Another guy responded "I'll tell you why: iWhy." The team leader thought this was a great idea, and sent it off to the higher ups for approval. The higher ups loved the new name, but decided to change it to iWi, "Because symmetricity is key". They sent out a mass e-mail, stating that this was going to be the name of Nintendo's new console. Unfortunately, they made a typo in the e-mail, and everybody was told the console was going to be called Wii. At a party the following night at Iwata's place, Shigeru Miyamoto got really drunk and started shouting "Wheeeeeeeee!". Taking this as a sign of approval, Satoru Iwata had the name "Wii" commissioned at once.
