A year and a half on... [Wii]

My Summary of the Wii So far

Well, they said it would fail, they were wrong.
Nintendo's Wii Console is currently sitting pretty with a healthy lead in the console war, despite being released a year after Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Sales Figures World-wide as of 24th March 2008... (approximated)
Wii : 20.5
360 : 17.5
PS3 : 08.5

I've compiled a Color-Coded (Because I rock) list of what so far is Wii's 'Heavy Hitters'

Super Mario Galaxy
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
Super Paper Mario
Mario Strikers Charged
Wii Sports
Battalion Wars 2

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Trauma Center: New Blood
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
No More Heroes
MLB Power Pros
Bully: Scholarship Edition
WarioWare: Smooth Moves
LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Geometry Wars: Galaxies
Madden NFL 08
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz
Link's Crossbow Training
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
FIFA 08
The Simpsons Game

NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
Sonic and the Secret Rings
Manhunt 2
House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return
Red Steel
Mario Party 8
WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2008
Wii Play
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity
Pokemon Battle Revolution
Soulcalibur Legends
Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast

As you can see, There are many great games for the console, with many more to come, including WiiFit, Mario Kart Wii, A new Zelda title plus many, many more.

The possibilities for games are endless, especially when you consider the Wii's unique Remote-Nunchuck Control Combination, With the remote having full infra-red Motion sensing and the nunchuck having a basic motion sensor, as shown in Wii Sports Boxing.

The console is also Ideal for bringing back many discontinued franchises including Kid Icarus, as well as giving titles like StarFox a new lease of life.

Another interesting feature is the 'Virtual Console', Which allows Past Games from consoles such as the Super-Nintendo, Nintendo 64 and even the Sega Mega-Drive (Genesis). This gives people who were not able to play such games the chance to try them using the 'classic' controller, the Gamecube Controller or, For NES games, The Wii Remote. One possibility for this service is games such as Earthbound, which was released in Japan only, to be introduced to America and Europe.

One further Feature of the console is 'WiiWare' Which is New Games that are only available via download, Such as Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King. This creates the opportunity for small company's to create games aswell as the possibility of spin-off titles for successful series, such as Metroid and Zelda. WiiWare will also feature downloadable content for future games.

One 'drawback' however, is the endless supply of 'Party' games being released for the 'casual gamer' and many non-gamers who wrongly believe that this is all the console has to offer. This is further amplified through cheap 3rd Party Peripherals that 'intensify' the gaming experience, yet often end up causing damage to the system, Televisions, or the players.

In Conclusion, I believe that the Wii has alot more to offer and this years E3 will mark an important chapter for the Wii as it will be then where the gaming industry starts taking notice that Nintendo aren't just making games for the 'Casual gamer'

Thoughts? Comments? I'll probably add to this eventually...

What do your colors stand for? Is it the degree of hype around the games? Average score?

Re: A year and a half on... [Wii]

I would assume "best game" or "most popular" are the lighter colors.

Or, Low, Middle, and High Tier.

Just a mix of sales and overall, The colours are representations of Gold, silver and Bronze, although I used yellow to make the top games seem 'Brighter'
Basically what SugarPoultry Said

Re: A year and a half on... [Wii]

I agree with almost everything you posted.
I just wonder if the Wii will top the sales figures at the end of 2008. The PS3 is still to show it's true potential yet and the Xbox 360's excellent online play could take them past the Wii. I just wonder what Nintendo are going to do to keep ahead after all the buzz over Mario Kart Wii and Brawl dies down. They will probably have to announce the next Zelda game, and they should give us more information about Animal Crossing Wii.

As long as more great games continue to be announced after Mario Kart Wii and Brawl are released, WiiWare is succesful and Nintendo releases more online games the Wii should continue to be succesful. I look forward to see how other developers implement the Wii's controls into their games.

Re: A year and a half on... [Wii]

Wii has a lot of potential lying a head of it. I don't think it will be very hard to stay on top. It's the other consoles I'd be worried about.

Re: A year and a half on... [Wii]

People are stupid and think just because a company won/lost/succeeded/didn't succeed the previous console war, that same company will win/lost/succeed/not succeed all over again. So, people automatically thought Nintendo would fail this time. They were wrong. Wii has a very bight future, and is still picking up speed.

It really is the Nintendo Revolution.

...I question one of the games in you list though. Why do you list Link's Crossbow Training as a hard-hitter?

Re: A year and a half on... [Wii]

If there's one thing I have to really criticise Nintendo for, it's their appaling lack of urgency with PAL release dates.

I mean, Europe/U.K customers have to wait until bloody June/July before getting Brawl. By this time, everyone has already mastered the game and have more than likely sought a challenge elsewhere.

If they can bottom this everlasting problem out then all should be fine in my book. Appealing to a much wider audience with a more accessible selection of games has proven to be such good marketing that Microsoft have started advertising the 360 as such.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, Battalion Wars 2, Wii Sports, and Mario Strikers: Charged don't even belong there. Wii Sports, Battalion Wars 2, and Mario Strikers: Charged; for the reason they're not even in the same section as SSBB, SMG, or Super Paper Mario. And TP and Resident Evil 4 don't belong, because they're not even Wii exclusives to begin with.

^ Exclusives or not, they're selling well and they're great games and that's why they're on that list.

Where's Guitar Hero then, I wonder.

Agree with you on Strikers though, I have yet to play Battalion Wars.

Re: A year and a half on... [Wii]

In my opinion the wii is still a failure. It fails to deliver many games that please real gamers like me. Nintendo is too busy trying to get 90 year old ladies to play Wii sports to bother making games that please the hard core group. Look at most of the wiis big sellers: Wii play, Mario Party 8, Carnival games. None of these are even REAL GAMES!!!! Nintendo needs to get more 3rd party support, since they apparently can't make an good original game on thier own. All of the truely good games (TP, Metriod prime 3, SSBB, Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario) are sequels to other games! I also want my online expirience to be as userfriendly and efficiant as the service I get on my Xbox live account. I shouldn't have to use a stupid hexidecimal code to find my friends.

When has Nintendo ever given you the idea that the focus in market and gaming is suddenly going to shift to the hardcore market?

And I concur with ShiekahSage. Nintendo has the third-party support, it's just that most of it is geared towards casual games that coincidentally suck for the most part.

In the end, I buying a Wii for the exact same thing I bought a Gamecube for: First-party titles. This E3 will be a final point on where they truly stand in the market. So we'll see what happens.

This made me laugh, although I agree completely.

I'm waiting for a truly great game. No more little kid crap. And I'd like some more normal gameplay. They're overusing the motion sensing. Its annoying. Wii has yet to really wow me. Nintendo seems to take forever to "perfect" a game, delaying five million times before release. But then it seems like they never really finished it. It's almost as if they hurried up and pushed the Wii out like a premature baby: it wasn't ready. Maybe that's why there are not many real games out.

After N64/early gamecube, it seems like Nintendo has gone downhill, along with the magazine. :p
