Is The Chrono Series Dead?

I loved the two chrono games, cross and trigger. And i dont really like rpgs but those were the best ive played. Theyre among my fav games of all time! But now it seems that the series has been long ended. Articles and news everywhere about chrono break or remakes for trigger are all old or stating another remakes been stopped. Why does the company stop people from making remakes?

And the creator of the series says hed love to make another chrono game but its too hard to get the team back together. So is there any chance it will come back? There is some news about a port to the DS or VC but even that isnt likely to happen. It seems square enix is trying to kill the series. Every time new news of it comes up being either a port or a remake, they are soon said to be cancelled.

I know many fans would love to see a new chrono and hope for it. But it doesnt seem like thats going to happen. The story was loved by all who played it and both games were very popular. In great popularity and many fans its stopped. The series stopped after only two games. Seems to have been ended too soon for most. So it seems dead right in the middle of its lifespan.

And if you havent played these games you should definatly try them out. Especially chrono trigger, it is said to be the best game by a lot of people. And thought to be the best rpg of all time by others. Definatly worth trying.

So, is the series dead? Post any news you know of its future.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

I like the concept of Chrono stuff, but it wasn't for me. I was more attracted to Final Fantasy. I super love Chrono Crusade though. ^_^

But...I don't want to see Chrono die. Perhaps a DS game that I could get and play? That would be great!

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

it wouldnt be hard for a subject of a new game either. I dont know how much you know of the plot, but the "Fall of Guardia" was never explained. along with many others.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

PM GoldStud and he'll come post in this thread with you. ^_^

I like the Chrono series, yet, I'm not a fan of playing it. It's weird, isn't it? I am on friendly terms with it though, and am also sympathetic with you guys. It shouldn't die. That's ignoring an entire fanbase.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

i know you are kind of a rare sight in the gaming world. Itd be a lot nicer though if more people were on good terms with games they dont like. Like the exact opposite of the present. Talk about super bashing by reviewers and gamers.

ill pm him thanx

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

I'm pretty sure it's dead.

Chrono Trigger was basically made by the RPG "Dream Team": Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy), Kazuhiko Aoki (battle designer for Final Fantasy), Nobuo Uematsu (composer for Final Fantasy), Yuuji Horii (creator of Dragon Quest) and Akira Toriyama (character designer for Dragon Quest). Sakaguchi was basically stripped of any meaningful duties at Square after The Spirits Within bombed, and left to form his own company, Mistwalker. Aoki is employed by SE on the Square side of things, and Horii is employed by SE on the Enix side of things. Uematsu and Toriyama are freelancers who have fairly busy schedules and no direct obligation to Square Enix any longer.

Chrono Cross did not use this team, of course, and still managed to be pretty good; but not nearly as good as the original. However, director Masato Kato is freelance now (though he has been working with SE on some recent Mana games), as is Yasunori Mitsuda, who composed a majority of CT's soundtrack with Uematsu and who worked on CC's by himself. Art director Yasuyuki Honne left Square shortly after the release of CC and is now working with Monolith Soft.

Basically, the original development teams are now in shambles, so anything new wouldn't be a "true" Chrono game. And if they couldn't get the Dream Team back together, I honestly wouldn't be all that interested. The closest thing you could probably get now is a game with Horii at the helm, but in that case you might as well play a new Dragon Quest installment.

So, I don't think it's going to happen, especially since Sakaguchi and SE are now on very bad terms. The closest alternatives I can think of are either Blue Dragon for the 360 (the development team included Sakaguchi, Toriyama and Uematsu -- a majority of the Dream Team) or the Dragon Quest series (Horii and Toriyama).

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

Well, I don't don't like it. I just haven't really gotten around to playing it yet. I did play Chrono Cross for a bit, bit it confused the heck out of me. I still liked it though.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

Oh and, Blizzaga, Chrono Crusade isn't connected to this "Chrono" series at all. The logo and name certainly makes one think of it though. I have no idea how they got away with that.

"Chrono" is actually spelled "Chrno" in the Japanese release though, so maybe that's how.

I know they aren't connected.

I'm just saying I like that one better.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

Ahh.

You know what could help appease this series' fanbase? A VC release of Chrono Trigger and a PSN release of Chrono Cross. I remember people going crazy about a GBA of CT but it never happened, so I'm sure that would calm them down a bit.

I still have the original versions (as well as the PS1 version of CT that was included in the Final Fantasy Chronicles collection), but I'd love that, especially if CC got a PSN release; playing it on my PSP legally would rule.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

Hm, that's too bad how the development team broke up. Correct me if I'm wrong though I beleive many of the original members who were responsible for Tales of Phantasia have gone through many company changes, and loosing many of the same staff but the Tales series is still around.

I've never played any of the Chrono games, but I have heard so much about Crono Trigger. I plan to play this in the near future, but as for now I can't say whether or not I would miss the series, but I do hope it continues for its fans.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

That's a great idea. ^_^

In fact, I find the concept of playing Chrono Cross on PSP rather cool. At least, a Chrono Trigger port for DS would be great for me.

Yeah, the original Phantasia team moved on to make Star Ocean and found Tri-Ace, where as some of the staff also went on to make the Tales studio. Which is great, because both Team Symphonia (and Destiny?) and Tri-Ace are still making terrific games.

Re: Is The Chrono Series Dead?

So, are you saying that the original development team for the Chrono series is now scattered all over the place? Oh well.
