Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

Quote:
REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 8, 2007 – It's no secret that fans of Nintendo's Wii™ system love their Mii™ characters – those adorably cartoonish caricatures of friends and family members that can be used in games like Wii Sports™. Some of the more artistic fans have even taken it upon themselves to make Miis of celebrities, politicians and fictional characters. Nintendo supports consumers' creative spirit with the Nov. 11 evening launch of the Check Mii Out Channel. This free new channel can be downloaded from the WiiWare™ section of the Wii Shop Channel by people who have their Wii systems connected to the Internet.

"The Check Mii Out Channel lets people show off their Mii creations and vote on those created by others," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "It's yet another way that we're building fun, interactive communities of Wii owners without charging them extra for the privilege."

In the Posting Plaza, users can submit, exchange or just browse Miis posted by others in their region or worldwide. The channel offers the ability to look at a random selection of 1,000 Miis or to see just the current or all-time favorites. Players have a variety of ways to search for specific Miis, including by the name of its creator or by a number specific to each Mii. Once users have found that "special Mii," they can even tag their favorites or import them to their own Wii systems.

The contest section of the Check Mii Out Channel challenges users to submit Mii creations to represent a specific person, character or theme. These could include historical figures (Abraham Lincoln or Vincent Van Gogh), fictional characters (the Tooth Fairy or the New Year's Baby) or descriptive themes ("the biggest bully ever" or "the overbearing boss"). Users can then vote on Miis submitted by others to determine the Mii that best fits the challenge. Each contest will generally last two weeks: one for creating and submitting Miis, and the second week for people to vote on the results.
Wait?! What? A reason BESIDES Super Mario Galaxy to turn on our Wiis? Hell YEAH. Finally something new to do on the system. The only thing that could make this better is an update to the Mii Channel itself.

^ Agreed. Now where's that DS demo channel we were promised?

Wait, wait... There's currently no such thing as a wiiware section. Will it launch on sunday or are they just mixing up wiiware with the software section?

Isn't the WiiWare where you can download the Internet Channel? I think the software section you speak of is called "Wiiware".

Uhm... I don't think I'm downloading this channel. I doesn't look fun to me.

Re: Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

"WiiWare" is what the "not games" download section of the Shop Channel is.

Sounds like a random gimmick to me. A slightly amusing gimmick to be sure. (Aren't they all just gimmicks, though?)

Re: Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

Sounds like a complete waste of time. The Miis were entertaining for the first two weeks of the system's life, and then they lost their novelty. I'd be just as happy if I never had to see another Mii again.

Re: Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

The Mii channel is too restricting. Nintendo should update it before they make a voting thing like this. Where's my Mario hat? Where's my green tunic? Why are the colors and options so limited? I think the Mii feature, while fun at first, is the exact opposite of innovative. Games that hardly focus on customization have more options than the Mii channel.

Yeah, I'm curtainly not going to waste space on my Wii to download this channel. It's not like the Wii has a HDD or anything.

Re: Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

I forgot to mention this before, but really the possibly best part of getting the Check Mii Out Channel is that it may come with a firmware update with new features/bug fixes. (Nintendo, the loading times are still ridiculous.) We shall see.

And as I stated in my original post, I agree. They need to update the Mii Channel if they want to make things interesting again. It doesn't have to be anything huge (because complex can be bad for these sort of things,) but how about some new hair styles, eyes, colors for everything, etc?

Is it going to cost anything? I can't find if it says so anywhere in the news about it.

no, it's free. Unless they change their minds of course. The only channel that costs is the internet channel, but even that was free to begin with.

Re: Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

This should be interesting, I've got more than enough freaky Miis lined up for evaluation.

I know Lavmiester did a spectacular job with one of his "SPARTAA!!" related Miis. You should present that to the world, Lav.

Re: Check Mii Out Channel Coming Sunday Night!

How . . . useless and unnecessary. The Mii concept is crap. This channel doesn't exactly help that prospective either. What Nintendo should have done is follow along the concept of the Home network application Sony had been planning for past two years now. Obviously there are seem restrictions that are applied to the Wii in that it can't be exactly like the Home network - but Nintendo could have least touched up on that idea/concept. For the first two months or so, I kept thinking the Mii's would evolve into something (at least) along the lines of the Home network. Instead, we get crap like Everybody Votes, and Check Mii Out.

And yet, Nintendo are proud of themselves for creating such uninteresting and useless channels. Quit wasting our time, Nintendo. . .

No, they're proud of all their money.

But I agree with you about the Home thing, the Mii Channel really needs to step it up. I don't think I've been on that channel since January.

Any idea on when it's coming out in Europe? I read somewhere that it's not gonna take too long for it to be released in Europe after it's out in U.S.
