Good rpg...
I am currently looking for a good genesis RPG. I know that the Snes had tons of great RPG's, so, I would like to play a genesis RPG and compare. I own about 25 genesis games and Not one is an RPG, its truly disapointing...so...if anyone knows of any, hopefully good ones, please throw me a bone

Re: Good rpg...
I know genesis wasn't much for RPG's. Thats why I wanna find the few good ones that exist. I actually have landstalker, which is good, but I was looking for something with turn based combat. Anyway, I will check out phantasy star. thanks.

oh well. I'm trying to start a collection of classic games/consoles, so I guess having a more finess RPG could never hurt. I have heard the newer shining forces are more anime style beat em ups/button mashers, so I was hesitant when I recognized the name.

Re: Good rpg...
If it's original Sega Genesis RPG's that you want there's this web site you can try, it's called Stage Select - Today's News, in the search windows you just type what kind of games your looking for (like shooters, RPGs, etc.) and click the Go button, from there you get an alfabetical list of games from A-Z, I'm not sure what to do from there but if there's a title you like I guess you can just look for the game on google. The way I found this site was on google search for " Sega Genesis Games". One rpg-game that came up was Dragon Warrior. Hope this helps Zeldask8tr.
Not sure why a link came out but it is the right web site. |

Re: Good rpg...
Phantasy Star IV is far and away the best traditional RPG on the Genesis; it's a must-play and the only Genesis RPG that easily stands toe to toe with the best the SNES had to offer. Finding the original cart at a decent price is gonna be rough, but even then I assume it'll find its way to the Virtual Console or somewhere else eventually. Certain plot points tie into events from the earlier games in the series, but playing them first isn't required to understand what's happening. The Japanese-to-English translation is superb. Play this game.
Thoughts on other noteworthy Genesis RPGs: Phantasy Star II has historical significance, but it hasn't aged well. The storyline is pretty good and way ahead of its time, using plot twists that wouldn't show up in more mainstream games for years to come, but the presentation feels very dated. The infamous ending's a real zinger though, if you stick it out to the end. Unfortunately the game is brutally difficult, demands lots of level grinding, and overall feels like a chore to play. Still a collector's item, at the very least. Phantasy Star III was developed by a different team then the others and gets panned as the worst of the four, but I'd still put it around PSII level in terms of enjoyment. The generation-spanning storyline was new I guess. If you're interested in the series, I'd suggest hunting down Phantasy Star Collection on the GBA. It'll get you II & III along with the vastly superior (IMO) original. IV is still the best, though. Shining Force deserves its status as a good game. It's a strategy RPG with battles similar to Fire Emblem and the like, but there are times where you get to wander around towns and stuff too. The plot is cliche as hell, but it's still a fun game and some of the characters you can recruit are truly bizarre and memorable. This game has been ported several times and has a slightly less elusive GBA remake if the original is too hard to find. Shining Force II is everything the first was and more. Probably the 2nd best Genesis RPG and definitely worth finding. Landstalker kicks ass, but you already have it, so yeah. Beyond Oasis is another action RPG that's somewhat similar to Landstalker, but that label is a little misleading. I'd say it's 90% action and 10% RPG; I've seen reviews describing it as "Zelda meets Streets of Rage" and agree with that assessment. Lots of fun for what it is though, and currently available on VC if you can't find the cart. Shadowrun probably deserves a mention too, although it's so far removed from the JRPG standard that most people are used to that it could put you off. An entirely different game than its SNES counterpart, this stays very true to the rules of the pencil-and-paper RPG of the same name. I think it can best be compared to modern WRPGs like Morrowind and Oblivion and is similarly open-ended with multiple play styles. I had fun with it despite not getting very far, but be prepared to grind for money. A lot. Also, I have no idea how rare this game is. That's all I can think of offhand. The Genesis was really more about action and visceral thrills than the atmosphere and immersion RPGs are known for... =P |

Re: Good rpg...
What about the Dragon Warrior game, I'm not sure if it was the first one but I know it was on either the NES or SNES (can't remember) but from the list on the web site I saw (the link on my first reply to this thread) wasn't Dragon Warrior on the Genesis or was it not very good?

Re: Good rpg...
I checked the link to make sure but I noticed the page that comes up isn't even the same as the one I originally found. o_O That's really weird, I figured I might have miss read something, but I remember that on the list I found it had Dragon Warrior as one of the titles before I looked at the A's. Oh well... sorry about that.
