The latest issue of Japanese publication Famitsu reveal new details on Star Ocean 4, the latest iteration of Tri-Ace's epic RPG series.

The game will take place in the same universe featuring characters and races related to the previous titles. This time, players will helm an exploration spaceship so it seems you have a certain degree of freedom going to different places. "In the previous games, the story pretty much progressed due to a chain reaction of events. Your ship crashes and so you were forced to explore that planet, then get rescued later and so forth. But in SO4, we made it possible for players to travel and explore different parts of the universe." says assistant producer Hajime Kojima.

The developers also revealed the main character, Edge Maverick, and the heroine, Reimi. They are childhood friends and both crew member of the spaceship of an organization. The battle system will play differently but will be an evolved version from Star Ocean 3. This time, up to 4 members can join the battle.

Unfortunately, it is still a mystery as to which console the title is headed. Kojima only referred to it as "game console(s) that can display beautiful graphics." So is it the PS3 or 360 or both? Hopefully we'll find the answer in the upcoming Tokyo Game Show.

Hell yeah. Can't wait for this game.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. Star Ocean 3 was a mixed bag for me; I loved the battle system, and the story was alright for the first half of the game, until they threw that god-awful plottwist at us. The rest of it was the same; some good, some bad.

It sounds like they'll be keeping the battle system, at least, so that's an instant plus right there.

It's on the PS3. This all reminds me I still have Star Ocean 3 sitting on my shelf unfinished. It really is a fun game it's just that there are parts that seem to be dragging on with that really annoying rock music.

Star Ocean's Techno=God. Can't say I feel terrible for you. And being for the PS3 is great for me. Though I don't know if there was ever any alternative seeing how bad the 360 is doing in Japan.

I'm really surprised at how good Star Ocean: First Departure is looking! It looks like it's actually using a bunch of high resolution graphics outside of the sprites. It doesn't look like a PSone game, unlike Second Evolution.

Second Evolution does look a bit better though. It's definately more of a shined up port though rather than getting high resolution backgrounds and stuff like the remake of First Departure is.

It's funny how much better First Departure looks, seeing as it uses Second Evolution's engine. These are my two most wanted games on the PSP. Can't wait for them.

So Famitsu has a huge Tri-Ace blowout in this week's Famitsu. Here are some preliminary details. I'm still looking for scans.

More details:

This comes despite a bunch of new details being disclosed in the magazine, including the first two cast members. Star Ocean 4 features a hero named Edge Maverick and a heroine named Reimi Saionji. From what we gather, these two have been friends since childhood.

We don't have too many story details at the point, but fans of the series should take note of one important fact. Star Ocean 4 is actually a prequel. It takes place before Star Ocean 1 as warp drives first come into being and humans take their first steps into space. Speaking with the magazine, the game's developers actually admitted wanting to originally call the game "Star Ocean 0."

Fans can expect to note a few connections with part 1 in the series. The developers suggested that players play through that game. If you find a certain person who makes you think he'll make an appearance in Star Ocean 4, he probably will.

The magazine also gave a few hints at some of the gameplay aspects of the title. Expectedly, you will have a party. The number of characters you can make into allies is at the level as in Star Ocean 3. The game's battle system will be similar to past titles, offering players real time control over one character while the computer AI operates other party members.

Outside of this, it seems that there may be some sort of network functionality included. Nothing is set, but the developers are currently considering a few things.

I'm really excited to see what PS3 sales are like once all of these RPGs like Star Ocean and White Knight come out. I can definitely see them being a major jumping point for them to take off for the rest of the gen.
