Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
I've noticed that many game developers aren't making some major games for the Wii. True the Wii is revolutionary and making people are jumping at this advantage but some games that are coming out for the Wii are the sort of alternate ones. For instance RE: Umbrella Chronicles or Soul Calibur Legends. It's not the exact game coming out, but more of a side story thing, or a recap. Do gaming industries just feel sorry that they aren't making a major title for the Wii so they make an alternate to it?

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
Hahahahahah!! (Um... sorry, that just made me laugh.)
They don't feel sorry for Wii, they just see the sales numbers and they want a piece of that pie! If feeling sorry for a console was part of the deal, the N64 and Dreamcast would have done tons better.

Sad to say it, but that's true... If any developer really felt "sorry" for the Wii for some reason, they'd stop making crappy half-job games (not in reference to Umbrella Chronicles or SC Legends in partucilar). No developer would ever feel "sorry" for a console. If they don't make money off of it, what do they care about it?

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
It's called a "side-projects" DSL9. Welcome to the Wii.
Honestly, it seems as though most developers just dish out gimmicky games for the Wii. In fact, most of the Wii's games are very much gimmicky and feel like they were made so that whatever developer made them just wanted a little extra cash. The reason developers don't put "real" games on the Wii is because it's merely not capable of handling whatever game the developer had in mind. The Wii is merely a last-gen console with a twist (that twist obviously being the Wiimote). I mean, RE5 looked very high-end. There's no way the Wii would be able to render the game like it did in the trailer. In the end (and in short), it's Nintendo's fault for creating a console that's only .5x (or somewhere around there) more powerful then the GCN =/.

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
It's not a case of feeling sorry for the Wii, it's a case of trying to give it something to make up for the lack of the game they've been making for the other consoles. Resident Evil 5 is far too graphically advanced for the Wii to handle, and so to make up for it, Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles was put into development. The next Soul Calibur game has the same reason for not appearing on Wii: graphical limitations of the console. So instead, the Wii will be getting the exclusive but less visually pleasing Soul Calibur Legends. Basically it's like trying to cover a large wound with a plaster.
Third-party developers could make their AAA games for the Wii, but that would mean they would look considerably behind the times on the 360 and PS3, hence why Wii gets exclusive titles to fill the place of the AAA ones that couldn't possibly run on it. Hopefully Nintendo will pack more graphical punch into their next machine, allowng for all three systems to enjoy the same visually impressive game. |

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
It's because the Wii is successful, so the third party developers know that they can make a quick buck if they use a recognisable name.
It's also because they're forced to work with technically superior systems. The execs at the companies are always going to make the developers release their key franchise titles on the Playstation 3s and XBox 360s of the day. Porting those titles to the Wii is an impossibility, and releasing a graphically inferior version would be a waste of time and resources. Thus, to make the "quick buck" I mentioned at the beginning of my post, the developers have to make a game that is secondary to the franchise in question (hence the Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Soul Calibur Legends, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers-type titles) and that are smaller in scope than the "main" games. |

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
I'm feeling sorry for those 360 and PS3 owners. I mean who wants an awesome game like Resident Evil 5? I will be much happier with the graphically inferrior, on rails shooter game Umbrella Chronicles. After all, gameplay is everything!
It's us Wii owners getting the good stuff. Really though, I don't support side titles. I refuse to buy them. Wii needs better graphics.

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
^ I admit, I'm still undecided on whether I want to like Umbrella Chronicles or not, but if there's one thing we can't bash it for, its the graphics. It's actually looks really good, especially for Wii, and the fact that a third party company is taking advantage of the system's power is remarkable.
Ugh, I want to chop off my fingers for having to say that. There is a lot of potential in third parties with Wii, but we won't see it for a while. I've lost almost every ounce of respect for Ubisoft by now, and even the one game that has some promise, that being Nitrobike, still looks like a mid-gen Gamecube game. Tecmo once again has proven that they're the single most underachieving third-party by making Rygar: Battle of Argus into a PS2-to-Wii port. For this year, Namco has a side-project in the form of Soul Calibur Legends (which I've lost most interest in), Sega's got a crappy arcade port, Rockstar's dishing out ports, EA has a few sports games and Medal of Honor etc. For the rest of the year, things won't be fantastic for third parties. I think we'll get some quality stuff in the form of things like NiGHTS, Trauma Center: New Blood and Zack and Wiki, but for the most part it won't be until 2008 that we get some real titles. Still, even when we'll get Crystal Bearers, Symphonia 2, No More Heroes, King Story, Harvest Moon and some other goodies, we'll still get truckloads of ports and rush jobs. And the thing is, there's no way you can really generalize the companies anymore. I'd like to say that all of the big guys are the ones who are just in it for some quick cash, but Capcom and Sega have a couple of respectable creations on the way. And I'd love to say that it's the smaller companies like Atlus and Grasshopper that are truly realizing the Wii's potential, but then we see slapdash titles like Dragonblade out of D3. I really don't know what to think anymore. I'm sure we'll get a lot of really awesome projects in time, but overall I don't think that Wii will be utilized as well it could've been by third parties when this generation is over. |

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
Naw, they don't feel sorry. It's sales, man. They know the Wii's making big money, so these game designers want some of that money.

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
Something I'd like to quote on the subject is this:
F@NB0Y$ - Better Than [insert name of game] updates M, W, and F I think Lemmy makes a good point in this respect, even if he just memorized it and quoted it word for word ![]()

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
Well, third party developers will likely get on board now that the Wii has surpassed X-Box 360 for worldwide sales, even though 360 had a year's head start. Since November, the Wii has sold 10.6 million consoles making it the fastest-selling console in history. 360 has sold 10.5 million. PS3 has sold around 4 million.

Re: Game Developers Feel Sorry for Wii?
It's really just the sales, Developers just want to jump on the gimmicks of things so they can make some fast money as already stated before. Ports and Half-assed party games are being flushed on the system like crazy, because developers no it will sell regardless of the game being good or bad. Most of the developers are actually fully aware of this, seeing as how from those same developers we've seen beautiful and outstanding titles in the past.
Now the reason they're making "side" projects for the Wii, is mainly because the idea the developers had in mind isn't capable of running on the Wii both graphically and in some cases certain new engines and mechanics won't render on the Wii's technology, which is for the most last-gen with a coupled Wii Remote (It doesn't seem like a problem though, because it's just like a Mouse and Keyboard with a little gyration). So we will see the games put forth with more technological standard being placed on systems like the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, while games like UC, and SC: Legends will be placed on the Wii. Developers could port games like RE5 or GTA IV to the Wii, but the game would be horribly butchered, I would also assume fans wouldn't buy the Wii version in that case so sales wise it's not very good way to go either, because for $10 more I would sure hell buy the better version of the game. |
