Should NC get a PSP?

Pick your answer, give your pros and cons, and if you choose yes, then tell me what I should do with it. Be realistic as well, as I'm seriously considering getting one but just want to know the thoughs of others...exp. of not being realistic: "YEA YOU SHOULD BUY ONE!!! THEN GO SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER BECAUSE SONY SUCKS AND I'M AN NINTENDO FANBOY!"

So yea.

Go for it, it's your money, people shouldn't tell you how to spend your money. There are good games for it, you could listen to music, watch movies, you could do lots of stuff with it.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

Sure, if you're willing to pay. I'm happy with mine and the few excellent games I have with it. There are also quite a few games coming out in the near future that I'm looking forward to.

Definitely. Whether using it for homebrew, media, or games, the PSP is a great thing to have.

Not right now.

Wait for the re-design that may or may not be on the cards?

All I say is to see what happens after E3.

This will probably be my choice, because who knows what is going to pop up at E3. So if there is a redesign then I'll probably wait.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

No, the DS is way better. I am being completly honest. It doesnt have as many games as the PSP, but the games it does have are way better than that of the PSP's. Go and ask anyone who has had both in like gamestop or something. I know all my co-workers love the DS a lot more than the PSP. The touch screen makes all the diffrence. If you already have the DS, then sure why not get a psp.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

No, not when the PSP isn't that great, the DS is in my opinion superior gaming wise and there might be a PSP2 around the corner.

Be advised that the multimedia part of the PSP is, well, bad. As you have to convert every movie file to the special .PSP format.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

I voted no since there are better things you can spend your money on and there might be a redesign coming. Wait for the redesign (if there is one). I heard its annoying to download stuff on it also.

...No you don't. It supports AVC, WMV, WMA, etc., etc. The only problem it might have is with DivX, which isn't supported because of licensing issues.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

I voted yes. I love my PSP many times more than my DS. PSP simply has better games, not to mention the fantastic multimedia abilietes it has. All in all I find it a superior choice over the DS.

I will say though wait til E3 to find out if there is a redesign in the works.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

I don't know, what do you want it for?

PSP may be the first handheld to perform all of those media capabilities fairly well, but if you've already got an IPod, Blackjack, Cellphone etc. or any combination, I'd say skip it, because it's out-done by most other devices. At best in its case, you'll be spending over $170 for a slightly better item.

If you want it for the games, then I'd cautiously say go for it. PSP's beginning to build up a strong library and it's gotten a bunch of good titles over the past year, but it certainly has its blemishes. There's a serious lack of killer aps, for one. It's got a lot of solid games, but few can be called 'excellent'. More importantly, you have a ton that can be found on PS2; the GTAs, Syphon Filter etc. and quite a few that just feel like portable versions of better console games; Tekken DR, Burnout Legends, the SOCOMs etc.

It's a strong handheld, but like the others, I'd say wait until E3 before anything to see what games are coming out and if there's any design changes. And then, think hard about what aspect of it you feel you'll be using most.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

If it weren't for Sony's huge fad fanbase, I'd say that the PSP would have gone the way of the GameGear long ago.

Pros: It's shiny.

Cons:
  • Ridiculously long loading times (kind of contradicts the Grab 'N Go gaming concept of handhelds).
  • Expensive.
  • It's a multimedia device that also plays games.
  • Most games for it are expensive.
  • Not that impressive of a game library (in my opinion).
  • Did I mention ridiculously long loading times?
  • Ironically, some people have complained that the touch screen for the DS is just a gimmick. Though the DS has long since proved that wrong, I still believe the PSP in itself is just a gimmick. Not much for it, but I want one. Isn't that weird? I guess for the upcoming Final Fantasy games for it.

In the end, it's all up to you and your tastes.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

Well I won a PSP a couple of months ago.
What have I done since then?

Put a few videos on it, proved quite awesome staying in bed and watching videos.
Changed the wallpaper a couple of times, been on the horribly slow internet browser it has, brought a 2Gb Memory Stick for it.

And the only game which I played mostly this past two months is:
Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road - Typical DBZ fighter, sometimes simple, but definitely holds your interest and can be very entertaining at times.

I've played:
- Killzone Liberation - Looks like an Ok game, but it hasn't got me hooked what-so-ever.
- Test Drive Unlimited - Lots of boring driving around...Thats it.
- Need For Speed Carbon - Controls are pretty good, driving is not bad. But it lags here and there which ruins it completely. Not to mention another badly made EA storyline.
- Call of Duty 3 - Horrible controls, very hard to play. Lose interest.
- Rainbow Six Vegas - I suppose its good graphics for a handheld, but very unappealing. Its pretty ugly, and the controls are horrible.
- Lemmings - Its a puzzle game, and thats all you get. Not my cup of tea, lost interest.
- Daxter - Haven't played any Jak and Daxter before, but this was probably one of the best I've played on the PSP so far. Good controls, visuals are pretty good and overall entertaining. But can't be arsed with 'kiddy' storyline though.
- LocoRoco - Holds your interest, good gameplay and something original.

I know there is still plenty of games I haven't played yet, but from what I can tell. FPS's and driving games don't work too well on the PSP. Puzzle, 3rd people and Fighting games seem to work pretty well.

So yeah, I'd wait until E3 to see announcements on a re-design. Because the PSP is pretty big and heavy compared to DS Lite.

I'd also have to say I wouldn't of brought a PSP, but I'm quite fine getting one for free.

Then why do they have a whole rant on gametrailers about the fact that it doesn't?
(It's about 3/4 through the vid.)

You need PSP video9 to convert all the vids:
Quote:
PSP Video 9 is a free PSP video conversion and management application. It can convert regular PC video files (avi, mpeg, etc) into PSP video files, as well as manage/copy these PSP video files between your PC and PSP.
It's even on the official site.

Which is exactly the same as the iPod, Wii, or PS3. What's your complaint? And of course, there are also plenty of other apps to do the work. Also note that there is no such thing as your .PSP. Files are just converted to a format that is supported by the device, once again, just like the iPod, Wii, and PS3.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

Well, the PSP has a fair amount of good games, but many of them are remakes (Both Megamans, Castlevania) or based on old games (GTA). This certainly isn't a bad thing, though.

I say buy a PSP if you a multimedia device or a good portable emulator (Chrono Trigger FTW!), or if you simply are a graphics whore.

You see here is my problem with this, every single game I've played on my PSP has had short loading times, mostly just a few seconds nothing more than 5 seconds. I don't see were this comes from.

Not that expensive. For $200 I got my PSP, two games, a carrying case, and a 2 year warranty.

Quote:

$30 is expensive? Most DS games I see are about that price.

I find the games on the PSP better than the games on the DS, it's as simple as that. I only own 2 DS games (Mario Kart and Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow both of which are crap if you ask me), I own over a dozen for my PSP. In fact I pretty much gave my DS to my fiance so her dad could play the new Pokemon games.

Re: Should NC get a PSP?

You should get a DS if you don't have one. HOWEVER if you have a DS then sure. It's your money. I personally don't like it though.

Some good features are things like Movies. But I belive it only has an hour and a half battery life. Overall I think you should get one only if you ...

1. Have a DS or a DS lite.
2. It doesn't really waste your money because you have loads.

My complaint is that the Ipod says it's an musiccarrier in combination with I-Tunes, Apple sell Ipod in combination with I-Tunes. Have you ever heared them say: "The Ipod is the ultimate multimedia device"? No.

Same goes for the Wii, the photochannel is an extra, not a selling point. I don't think they even mention it on the package of the Wii.

I don't have experience with the PS3, but if it has the same 'support' as the PSP then my complaint can be expanded to the PS3 but in a lesser matter. As the Blu-Ray and games are their main selling points.

The PSP, on the otherhand is being sold as the multimedia device which everyone should have. Because it's perfect for watching all your videos on!
Then I say: "Multimedia?" Multimedia, not Sonymedia or only-this-format-media. My complaint is that they try to sell it as something that it's not, and thus trick people in buying a PSP.

On the games perspective: I found that someone at I believe it was gametrailers made a good point: DS games are portablegames and different from what you see on the consoles, you can play a game like Mario Kart for 5 minutes and be happy.
The games on the PSP are more or less console games like GTA for instance, you can't play GTA for 5 minutes when you have arrived at your mission briefing and saw the cut-scene your 5 minutes are already over.
