PS3 $100 Price Drop? (Rumor + Pic)

I still think it's a store-only thing, and that it's the retailers behind this. First it's Circuit City's week-long sale, now we have only 'select' Targets taking part in this, and just today I looked at the sales papers for CC, Best Buy and Target, all of them still pricing it at $599 with no mention of a sale.

The only other possibility I see is what you guys have said, with Sony trying to keep them from issuing it too soon. But I can't buy that right away because even if its Sony, that's just a wierd situation.

It's about time Sony learned up. The XB360 was selling well, because it had no components of it's teir when it was released. Sony made their stupid decision of releasing their system RIGHT next to the Wii... which cost $300 less at release. >.>

Ummm, they released it for the Holiday season. You know...when everyone is buying video games. So it was a good decision.

It was €545,- at release here, have no idea about the US though, the games are being bought in at €48,-.
Ofcourse I have no idea if these numbers are still accurate.

I thought the same thing, until I went back to the original story and saw that the ads featuring the $499 price are for the week of the 15th.

Well, I think this is a good move for consumers if it is realized, but I'm a little worried about Sony. It is the richest Japanese company, but with this price drop, they'll be taking even bigger financial hits per unit sold. Unless the hardware manufacturing price just went down.

60 gig model going for $499 US dollars, new 80 gig model going for $599 US dollars. Not only that, but everybody gets a nice copy of Motorstorm to enjoy....I hate it when the only bundle out there is a bundle I don't want.

or you could get a 360 elite for $512, and save a lot more money, and get a better system. Sides, it probably wont drop till round a bout 2009, so I have heard.

Which it undoubtedly has, but probably not enough yet for any sort of drop like this. Blu-Ray prices have really dropped, and that's a large component of the PS3's price. The only thing really holding the PS3 in the bright flashing red is the CELL and the RAM.

But again, why the hell would CC only have that sale advertised as being a week long if Sony truly is planning to cut the price for good?

A question for you more tech-savy people; considering that Sony was losing a fair amount of money on each 60 gig PS3 sold, how much more would they be losing now with an 80 gig model at the same price?

hopefully if sony lowers its prices then the 360 will lower its.

Currently, they are losing $300 (U.S) each time a PS3 is sold. They manufacture for $900, and sell for $600. They will probably lose a lil more like $350, b/c of it being an 80 Gb.

Wait I thought they only lost $250. The manufacturing price went up?! Now that's ludacris. Although I doubt it'll happen again. Also, you gotta think about how much the 60 gb model will lose. 400 bucks man, that sucks for them. Although the thing about the Ps3 is that it will last pretty much 10 years with all the stuff it has so it'll be interesting to see how this goes.

Gamespot now confirms it

[UPDATE] Today, Sony confirmed to GameSpot that a fusillade of reports from US retailers had augured last week. As of July 9, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model. So far, the price drop is for North America only. "This news does not affect any other PS3 territory," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Tough luck for the rest of the world, especially since it's so much more expensive in certain areas outside of NA.

Now that this is all cleared up, I have another question; why the hell was there so much damn confusion over this? Nobody, retailers or Sony, seemed to have a complete grasp about what was going on.

Awesome. Now All the PS3 needs is a big increase in a game library (maybe go down another 50 bucks) and then I'd definetaly consider getting it over the 360.

Actually, Sony will end up saving money by using the 80GB HDD instead of the 60GB, as the 80GB HDD's are more mass produced. The difference in manufacturing costs should be negligible. And yes, Kishro Diablo, you spotted Link14's BS. Sony isn't loosing $300 per console.

Actually, its not bs, but believe what you will. All im doing is saying what i have been informed about.

Also, apparently, if the 80GB PS3 is the same as the Korean version, it will make use of the 65nm CELL, which I really haven't heard much of before now, and will have the PS2 CPU and GPU removed. So there's some significant savings right there.

To tell the truth the PS2 is getting more sales weekly than the PS3.

I knew they would remove that stuff eventually. It was speculated for months and it was very obvious it was going to happen. Good thing I just bought a PS3.
