A new Xbox 360.

We've confirmed with trusted sources that the black Xbox 360 is indeed coming (the image above is of the original 360 dev kit, FYI), and will be dubbed the Xbox 360 Elite. Here's what you need to know about it:

The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand.

The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging.
Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs.

Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI.

We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall.
Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips.

Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping.

The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360.

There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change).

Thats neat I guess. And it is still cheaper than a PS3. Personally I am happy with my Wii until some must have games come out for it.

If I had enough money to offord all the games I want for my DS and Wii AND an xbox360, I qould be so happy. But I dont have enough money at the moment

Sexy. Too bad I've recently redecided that my second next gen console will be a PS3, just so I'm completely sure I get the games I want. But I like what this is doing to the 360. This little change alone helps extend its life some. Though it is really a shame that these units don't include the 65nm processors yet. That would've really wrapped the package up nicely. Eh. If nothing else, it will help Microsoft not make such a loss on it's consoles.

Now i'm sad, cuz i'm thinking of buying a good HD tv, and my xbox360 doesnt have hdmi slots >_< bah, oh well, its a nice thing tough.

Looks like a complete waste of crap. Even a poll at gamefaqs thinks so. I don't know what it is with video game franchises these days, but they are so greedy for money they are blinded by what they are trying to do. What do you guys think?

I'll have to admit though that price is pretty damn good for an soupped Xbox360.

But yes it's just another tactic for people to keep buying the system.

Actually, it's just to help keep open space. All the movies on the Marketplace are large, so they need a bigger hard drive to keep the money flowing.

Not really a "new" 360, per say, but more of a mere upgrade. But it should have been standard, regardless. Anyway, people who have held up on getting a 360 could look into this, or hopefully the 65nm processor chips.

Still waiting on that 65nm process. $480 is way too much for a console that still suffers cooling problems.

Also a shame I couldn't get in before the ubiquitous "M$ just wants more monies" posts. I saw it coming before I clicked the thread.

The main tactic here is to attract people who havn't bought the 360 yet. Like me (though I'm still waiting on 65nm)

Oh, and the same thing about redesigning and selling new versions of consoles can't be said about Nintendo when it comes to hardware sales!

Agreed. To me, it simply looks like a refurbished version of the Original Xbox. Buying it would remind me of those horrible days.

I'm really excited about getting the Elite 360. I've wanted a 360 for a while, but this just did it for me. I get my job soon. And I know the first thing I'm saving up for. The Wii and I are having a bit of a dispute. I'm kind of mad cause she's not coming out with any new good games, and she keeps saying "But those few games I do have are great!" And I don't know. I just don't see things from her side.

I've been saving up for a 360 for awhile now and was wondering if the Elite is worth the extra $80? Is it really any better than the premium besides the color change.

The Elite Xbox also holds more memory. If you are bonkers for more memory, by all means shoot for the stars. But the 360(400$) holds the same experience, glory and fun you'll experience. Just buy Gears of War, hook up your 360 online, and you'll never be board again, lol.

Looks pretty sweet. I'm not gonna be buyin one until... ever most likely.

You say that with a hint of contempt, even with your disclaimer. Just so it's clear, everything sold in a store, is a market ploy. The first 360, was a market ploy. Tooth paste, is a market ploy. Pillows are market ploys.

No one puts things on the market for the hell of it. I'm pretty sure ninety nine percent of people putting things on the market expect some sort of payment for them. Hahah, and yes I look like a fanboy jerk with my signature and all that. But it's not just in the case of the 360. It's just a little redundant that people call things market ploys like that makes them bad. It doesn't.
