Gates: Nintendo our "toughest" foe

"The strength of Nintendo...in the portable space, has been very impressive," Gates said in a video interview currently viewable on YouTube. "[It's] surprised a lot of people, I think, [that] and the Wii. We see Nintendo as our toughest competition."

Given that the interview was with Tokyo TV, it is possible Gates' comments were about the Japanese market, where the Xbox 360 trails far behind both the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. Naturally, many fanboys have taken Gates' comments as another indicator of Sony's greatly exaggerated demise. That viewpoint, though, overlooks the possibility Gates was intentionally slighting Sony in public as part of its ongoing war of words with the electronics giant.

If you really think about it, Nintendo is the biggest foe to Microsoft and Sony.
Nintendo could quite easily take out this generation, atleast for awhile.
In the handheld and console market.

Nintendo has to go for innovation as Microsoft have all the power and graphics of this gen.

No really, when it comes down to it the PS3 is the most powerful console. However it has some massive drawbacks.

When it come to innovation however Nintendo does lead the way.

Bill Gates clearly said that in an attempt to b*tch-slap Sony. That's my theory.

Yeah I'm guessing that too, Sony really has alot against them. They really need to step it up if they're going to be successful this generation.

Yes, that's quite possible. However, Nintendo may well be a bigger threat than Sony because they're approaching this generation so differently than the other two. On one hand, they might steal the show. On the other, they may appeal to a different enough audience that Microsoft and Sony's sales aren't effected too much.

On a side note, I seem to have lost my postcount and avatar in my long hiatus. My signature's still here, though.

As it stands, yeah, Nintendo is most likely going to be Microsoft's main competitor this generation. In the long run, though, I have a feeling that the 360 will maintain its dominance. The headstart it got is sure to help, as will the quickly growing library of fantastic first and third party titles. I can see Microsoft taking Sony's place this time around and Nintendo playing about the same role it has since the N64.

True. 360 is doing pretty dandy right now. If Wii pwns PS3, microsoft will defintily be the next target. I think Microsoft was smart to launch 360 a year earlier. BUT 360s and PS3s are breaking down, the only [apparent] thing wrong with Wii is hurting yourself while playing. Then again 360 is getting Halo 3, so I can't complain.

Other than the power bar overheating (which was fixed in Gen2 version of 360), how is Xbox360 breaking down right now?

Gates is just saying it to rubbish Sony... Wii isn't even in the same market as the 360 or the PS3... it's not competing with either but the PS3 and Xbox 360 are with each other.

It's true, Nintendo will beat out Microsoft out in the long run unless Microsoft releases a killer app...maybe Halo 3, maybe...

These days, I don't think Mario is as popular as Halo.

Haha, yeah, I bought the 360 for four reason, Madden, Oblivion, Gears of War, and Halo.

I beg to differ. Mario is still going strong and has been since the release of Super Mario Bros, whereas Halo hasn't been around nearly as long. I'm sure I could talk to anyone on the street about Mario, which is a household name. If I tried to strike a conversation about Master Chief, it would be harder and I would have to explain who he is.

That being said...no. I highly doubt Halo is more popular than Mario. After reading that article, I do think that Bill Gates is having the time of his life by making fun of the PS3 at the moment.

Re: Gates: Nintendo our "toughest" foe

Nintendo is definately one of the biggest console manufacturers. Sony is sorta
falling out with the PS3 right now. I have no doubt that they'll come back but
for now they're really in the ditch. Microsoft is doing very well for itself on the
other hand so it would make since that they and Nintendo would be in big competetion

How can people say Sony is in a ditch when it just came out? It will sell well this year, trust me.
