Is it me or did the V.G.A Awords stink?

gimme some feedback about the VGA awards that were held a couple days ago. In my opinion it really stunk.

I saw it with some friends and we all agreed that the actual show was rather pointless and the only point to it was to try to attract the cooler crowd to video gaming. My favorite part was how they would show all the important awards for gaming like best graphics, best gameplay, and best original soundtrack in tiny little segments. The they would show extremely unimportant (in my opinion) awards such as best human female appearance in order to put popular faces with gaming. Also, TES Oblivion winning best game of the year, I agree that the game is definately stellar but Gears of War should have won hands down (although it was satisfying to see the look on friends face when he found out that his beloved gow didn't win). Also, I enjoyed how they tried to distance themselves from the hardcore gamers (WOW gamers in particular) in order to draw in nongamers while at the same time trying not to offend them by making them seem like jokes.

Those awards always suck. They just pander to the mainstream. OK... wait... GOW... best game.... *vomits* I do not believe the sheer amount of fanboyism that game has inspired. I don't see how it is that great.

Well GOW mainly is great because of the fact that it has by far the best graphics I have ever seen. Other than that the gameplay is good, the storyline is somewhat impressive, and the online play is entertaining. Its not hard to see how the game can be good seeing as it does pretty well in most categories that make a good game. Also, since mainstream would generally mean the stream with the most volume aka consumers in it then yes it would seem that most popular would generally be equated with mainstream. What did you expect that they would choose some smaller, less popular game for game of the year. Also, I think it is somewhat ironic that you are using the fanboy card on a zelda forum, which has some of the largest fanboys in the gaming industry.

Ahh noo I am sorry but you mentioned graphics in a derogative/positive way. And I HATE it when people do that as I feel that graphics shouldn't be worth anything and anyone who argues with graphics as a topic instantly negates the validity of what they said in my eyes. And yeah I am using that card as I am not a fanboy of anything besides CotW: Raven Star which is such an unbelivably good and old game most of you have never heard of it.

I got really mad when I turned it on. I feel that gaming is becoming a fad, or mainstream. The VGA's pretty much had nothing to do with gaming, having non-gamer celebrities hosting it. I am fine with video game commercials, and all, but having something so ANTI, is just absurd.

Surely you must care about graphics a little bit? The way I see it graphics are the topping on a cake, alone they give you a stomach ache and your still hungry afterwards because they have no substance but graphics still improve the game (keep in mind that I never said graphics make a game). Your right though that the most important part of a game is the meaty gameplay which Gears of War has along with its great graphics. However, not looking at graphics as a piece of what makes a great game is a bit hypocritical. I mean, you undoubtedly enjoy OOT or some Zelda game, but would you enjoy it more if it had better graphics? You'd be lying if you said no. Gears of War's claim to fame is its graphics true enough, but it does have solid gameplay backing it up as well.

Have you even played the game online? That alone is worth buying GoW. Plus you just sound bitter cause something you wanted to win didn't.

The above being true, except what you said about me wanting OoT in better graphics, I would prefer it left alone.

I just dislike when people use graphics as a core foundation of an argument, admittedly I love when things are nice and shiney and new. But I would prefer graphics to be at best a side note not the selling point of the whole game!

Also I felt that GoW was a bit... repetative? Sometimes it was like dying in SMB over and over again but the level keeps slightly changing

Wasn't samuel the host? You know he was a voice actor in GTA: San Andreas.

Sweet it looks like we have met on some sort of common ground that we both agree on and honestly, I would have given Game of the Year to TP out of everything I have played this year (which isn't a huge amount of games keep in mind) because I'm not a huge third person shooter fan but from what I've seen and played (not a huge amount either) it seems like this game is the king of third person shooters this year and I can't wait for a break to get it.

TP did get an award for being the best game in something, which I was satisfied with.

But the VGA weren't that bad. The only thing I hated was the awards they had for roles in the video games. It didn't really matter, it had nothing to do with gameplay. And besides, those games that did win those awards had aweful graphics AND gameplay (yes, I have played those games).

But I think that Samuel L. Jackson did a great job in hosting this year's VGA (when I say great, I don't mean fantastic of excellent, just great). I also liked the part about the video game violence. I felt sorry for that guy with the busted XBos 360.

I think it got the Critic's Choice Award.

Gears of War and Elder Scroll's IV: Oblivion have both superb graphics and gameplay. They defiantly deserved some of the awards they got.

Anyways, as before; the Spike VGA base seem to base everything about video games entirely on action and violence. If they didn't seem so simple-minded, then I'd take the VGA more seriously. Some of the material they showed was actually funny this time (especially the beginning) though.

Exactly the awards themselves weren't bad and I didn't really mind samuel L. but they gave coverage to awards that really didn't matter just so they could call up a celebrity to gain publicity. It had nothing to do with real gaming and was mostly just one big publicity stunt.

Well, they weren't basing everything off of violence and action, but it's just what the people liked. The games were nominated by people, so I guess the people would be considered simple-minded.

And I also liked that stereotype about women and video games, especially with the brain diagrams (the women possess no awesome lobe, but they have the bordom-ablagada, complaint-lobe, and the nag-medulla). That was hilarious, in my opinion.

I usually just laugh off the results, but I actually thought a lot of their choices were pretty good this year.

It certainly seemed that way.

I'm not talking about how the games were nominated; I'm talking about the entire show in general. "Action this, blood that, violence, gore, etc." But, I suppose if that's what people want to hear. . .
