worst controller
Sadly, I choose the GCN controller. It just simply isn't good for fighting games.
Luckily it's crappiness is only limited to that genre, it's great for everything else. It's because of the controller that I bought the PS2 version of Soul Calibur 2. As much as I would have liked to play as Link, I couldn't tolerate the oversized, oddly shaped buttons. Last edited by Blutkind; 12-02-2003 at 02:46 AM. |

Re: wrost controller
I haven't tried the GCN controller for SCII but it seems a lil fragile to me ^.~
I think that the Nintedo 64 controller is possible the worst made but I didn't vote it on account of the "cool" factor . A three prong controller is always cool .I voted the X-box controller as the worst. Because it sux.

Re: wrost controller
Anyone who's actually used an Atari 5200 controller should have little trouble attesting to its completely backward design. Even the Dreamcast controller, as much as I dislike it, is nowhere near as bad. I'd truly be hard pressed to find a controller worse than that of the 5200.

Re: wrost controller
Having not played the atari one that Dryth so clearly dislikes, I'll have to go with the PS1 controller. I HATE it. It is so damned uncomfortable. Every other controller on that list (out of the ones I've used at least) is vastly superior to it... except the PS2's dual analog one, which is the exact same thing.
Even the original XBox controller beats it by a mile.

Re: wrost controller
The gamecube controller is the worst. It's D-Pad is just completly useless. X-Box's S-Controller, is actually very very good, except 2 buttons are in akward positions. The F-Type, is too fat. The ps2 controller is very good too, but some of the buttons are low quality.
I'm going with Gamecube's for worst controller design, only because of the D-Pad. THe analog control is very good though. I haven't played enough of any other controller to make a decision on them. Quote:

Re: wrost controller
I don't understand this hate for the GC controller. I think it has the best controller design of all time, aside from the SNES's/ Although it isn't nearly durable enough.
And I can reach and use the d-pad just fine... just as easily as I can reach the control stick, in fact.

Re: wrost controller
The worst controller is either the bulkiness of the X-Box's, or the poor design of the PSone AND PS2.
Probably.. PSone. GC has a much superior controller design than the (IMO) somewhat bulky N64 controller. The Z "trigger" should be on the GCN controller, instead of on the shoulder!

Re: wrost controller
Xbox controller, pah. That thing has atleast 30 buttons, and you never know what a button really does. When I played the IMO horrible game Halo, I couldn't do the right things in the right situation. It was so complicated.
The best though, is the GameCube controller. No fanboyism, believe me. Even for fighting games, I find no problems. The D-pad is worthless, though, and the Z-button. Also, I find the ergonomic grip for the GC controller very comfortable, I just love it...

Re: wrost controller
I picked the worst as the NES controller. Just not very ergonomically designed, though I'll admit I haven't tried quite a few of those.
Personally, I find the PS2 controller to be the best, though by a slight victory. It isn't as comfortable to hold as the GC controller, but the button layout is vastly superior. And though I enjoy joking about XBox's controller, the one or two times I picked it up at Wal Mart I actually thought it felt kind of comfortable, with the exception of the buttons (don't like their shape or how they press).

Re: wrost controller
I love the GCN controller. While it feels somewhat smallish in design, it makes up for it in feel. Every button is perfectly reachable (yes, even Z. It's not hard at all, just takes an hour or two to get used to it), and it conforms to your hands perfect.
As for the worst, I picked the original PSX controller. No sticks, and it feels pretty bad. The same problems are apparent in the PS2 controller. Yes, it has tons of buttons, but they all feel uncomfortable and awkward after using the GCN controller. That, and it feels like it was made for a robot. The handles are too small and flat. I guess you get used to it, but I don't see why people claim that it's a godsend. |

Re: wrost controller
Well, I'll say right now that my opinion will differ due to my hand size. Most guys at my school have hands that are a whole joint bigger, its like Im missing one...
With that said I have to say that I like the design of both the GC and PS2 controllers. The PS2 has the start/select butons placed closely to the D-pad and other buttons, which is what I like most. And of course, its "smallness" doesnt affect me, it fits perfectly into my hands. The GC controller I like for mostly the same reasons. Simply that the buttons are easily accesible and well-placed, probably a bit moreso than the PS2, but I still like them both. As for my least favorite controller, that would have to be the Sega Dreamcast. Its big and the start button and the D-pad are located too far away from everything else, its just too bulky for my hands...

Re: wrost controller
The GC control is damn near perfect for soul calibur 2. For other fighting games I agree with you the GC controller is just not layed out right. I find the orginal xbox controller the worst, five seconds on that holding that thing.... Well Penny-Arcade says it best. I have no major problems with the Ps2 control pad, although I find it a tad small.

Re: wrost controller
umm i have huge and i mean HUGE hands, but i love the GCN controller, the ps2 is ok but it took me a while to get used to all the buttons, i love fighting games with the gcn because the diagonal moves are easy to do (like in bloody roar to do the special moves) anyways, the xbox is the worst for me not cause its too big but it actually HURTS my hands after awhile o_0 that's definatelly not good

Re: wrost controller
I actually can't decide, since the only controllers I've ever touched are the PS2, Xbox, and N64 controllers.
And I DON'T think the Duke (Original Xbox controller) sucks. Matter of fact I love it. I went out and got one when I found out my Xbox came with an S. That thing's just dinky-small, that and I learned to play with the Duke so it was a change I didn't go for. |
