I don't have PS2 and I've never played any of the Final Fantasy games. But I was wondering if I should get a PS2 so I can play FFX and the others or if it would be a good idea to just watch a video of someone else palying the games on Youtube?
What FF games are worth playing and which are worth just watching?
The reason I just want to watch is time and money.
Would just watching take awy from the experience?
There's a lot of customization and exploration in FF, the experience of which you can't get from watching. It depends on what you're interested in. If it's about story, there are plenty of brilliant, detailed walkthrough things you could read. The music is usually worth listening to, and very easy to find from a website. Gameplay is fun because of the flexibility - weapons choice, tuning your magic system, choosing characters for your team, etc.- but other than that it's mostly button-mashing. Full-motion videos are beautiful to watch even if you don't know what's going on, and they're quite readily available.
I got all the games from VII to X-2 at under $20 each. If you're truly interested in playing several of the FF games I think a PS2 is a good investment. But there is a wealth of information on the internet (video or other) that can give you a good feel of an FF game.
What FF games are worth playing and which are worth just watching?
In my opinion, FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX are worth playing. Kind of defeats the purpose of PS2, though. Unless you're considering FFXII too, which I think will be brilliant.
I find FFX and FFX-2 have less in the area of exploration and the gameplay flexibility mentioned above.
Final Fantasy is arguably the most popular video game series in the world, so you should check it out, at least once, to see why everyone likes it.
You really won't have to worry about money when it comes to FF; most of them are very cheap. And, just watching it won't work; there is so much to do and so much to explore in the games. They are sort of like interactive novels.
I'd say that you should check out each game in what I like to call the "Golden Age" of Final Fantasy, which are FFVII, FFVIII, and FFIX. X is pretty good, and so far, XII is very fun, but it has a bit darker tone than the previous ones.
I recommend getting them all. They were remade for GBA. Also, leave VIII until last. Its considered the worst in the series. And dont play X-2 until you've finished X, as X-2 is a REALLY cheesy spin-off and unless you played X you probably wont like X-2.
There was a thread on this not too long ago and I made a pretty big post on what games I recommend. It had links to clips and such. You can check it out here.
My post was the last one.
And I don't recommend just watching them. PS2s are pretty cheap now and there's such a huge selection of games for it so it's definitely worth the money. On top of that, you can play PS1 games as well since it's backwards compatible. Final Fantasy games are something you have to play and experience to enjoy. Just watching them won't cut it.
EDIT: You can actually download a demo of Final Fantasy VIII for PC here. No idea how it runs on computers nowadays, but I suggest checking it out.
EDIT Again: Actually, don't even bother. I just played through it and all it really consists of is some repetitive battles and the bland story bits have an emphasis on how whiney Squall is. I thought it was going to be the same as the awesome PS1 demo, but I guess not. So, on the FFVIII front, I recommend watching the fantastic opening FMV instead of playing the demo.
I tend to think FFIX is overlooked. I wouldn't say any of the main installments are bad, but IX seems to be written off. I guess part of it has to do with the style and that it was released right before the PS2 came out - those last games don't usually sell well, obviously. But I would definitely play it. It was the first Final Fantasy I experienced, so I may have a little bias. But I really think it is underated.
And I think you should watch Advent Children for the heck of it sometime.

The real "Golden Age" of Final Fantasy was back before Playstation even existed. When sprites ruled the FF universe. Those were the days...

I don't think VIII is the worst. I consider it the most technical of the series. And as for X-2, I found it more fun than the original X. Go Gullwings! ^_^
I think the most overlooked FF's are FF Tactics, Tactics Advance, and Crystal Chronicles. Are three were great games! FF Tactics is said to have the deepest storyline of any Final Fantasy game. Tactics Advance is an awesome FF for GBA.
If you ever buy a PS or PS2, I recommend you grab FF Origins (FF I and II), Tactics, and VII through X-2. The only Final Fantasy game the I haven't found very appealing was FF Legends for Gameboy, but that's just me.
Just in case anyone doesn't realise, but there are PS1 re-makes of all the main-series FF games before VII (except for III - you apparently need a DS for that -_-). Plus, if you have the money, I'd say getting everything from the original (Final Fantasy Origins, which has already been mentioned) right up to X ould be worth it. IV and V are bundled together as well, but VI is on it's own.
And agreed on IX being under-rated (I'm currently on disc three), but I hated X-2. At least Tedious wasn't in it. :/

Yep yep yep! Isn't that sweet?! Right now, I'm playing FF I from Origins. I also have FF III DS (BOOM BABY!), and it is easily one of my most favorite FF games. It got me to thinking that there should be a VII remake too. There have been plenty of rumors about that.
^ It has as much plot as the first Zelda did, Cez - and it's still a better game than 90% of more modern ones I've played.

You must die now, jellyfish. -_-
Oh, and a random question - is it worth getting FF: Crystal Chronicles for the 'cube if you don't have the GBA version? Because I'm thinking of picking up a few extra GC games when I get my Wii, and that might go on the list.
Crystal Chronicles is pretty crappy when you can't play it multiplayer. Luckily I got my copy for $13.99. It's pathetically short (15 hours at the most), lacks plot and character development, and is just very boring and repetitive. I wouldn't recommend paying more than $15 for it.
I don't know what you mean by "GBA version" though.
