Re: Halo

Halo was great, and while the graphics don't quite hold up in today's world of detail textures and ragdoll physics, they still don't look too bad for a two year old console game, practically the first one on the console at that. The music is also amazing in it, and I've been looking for songs from the game ever since I played it (which is only the PC demo). Gameplay wise, while it may not be the most original game out there, it's still an absolute blast to play, though I hear that the middle section of the game is a bit slow-paced. The slower than normal walking speed is great, really makes you feel like you're in a big suit, and the concept of holding two guns, despite what Lord Yoshi said, is realistic and provides some incredible strategic opportunities. First of all, you can't hold more than four weapons in real life. More than two is just plain cumbersome. Second of all, it allows for some great decisions. Do I drop my assault rifle for a sniper? I can pick people off from a distance, but if I'm caught in CQB, then I'm screwed. If I drop my plasma rifle for a rocket launcher, then I can take out Hunters in one hit, but then I can't take out smaller guys with the plasma rifle. Rocket ammo is also very scarce. Ingenious, if you ask me. The AI in the game is also the best I've seen, second to perhaps Half-Life 2, which isn't really quite the same, as the game world tells the characters what to do, rather than them deciding on their own. Still, the AI in Halo is great, with characters dodging bullets, throwing grenades, using the terrain to their absolute advantage, fleeing, getting support, charging when health is low, attacking melee, and many, many more great things. However, it does have a few shortcomings. It's substitute ragdolls are really bad at times, with characters suspended in midair, even when they shouldn't be. It isn't much of a problem most of the time, though, and rarely occurs unless you're trying to get it to mess up. The multiplayer side of things is good, but the banshee is overpowered, IMO, considering that lag will cause most of your shots to miss, and rockets are hard to find in most maps. Plus, the fact that you can simply run people over is incredibly annoying, with idiots dominating games with no skill at all. As for preformance, it sucks. That's all I can say. Yes, the game doesn't look bad, but come on! Even though it sports nice effects, dynamic lighting, and bump maps, the textures are weak, the models are low-poly, and considering that it runs horribly on anything but a monster system (lucky me ), it's definetly inexcusable.Aside from these minor shortcomings, I think it's great. While it's not the most revolutionary thing out there (although it did introduce vehicles into FPS games...hmm...), it's still a blast to play, and possibly one of the best games since Half-Life. |

Re: Halo
I have been a fan of the Bungie games pretty much since they first came out, back with games like Marathon and Myth. I got Halo for my compy when it first came out for it a month or two ago, and I must say I am a bit dissapointed.
First off, this game doesn't live up to the standards I expected. Instead of being a complex problem solving like game such as their old stuff and having a wild and cuucy(hah, spelled that so wrong) plotline, its more of just a straight forward shoot-em-up game. Not that I am opposed to that type of game. But it gets soooooooo freaking repetative in levels like "The Library" or whatever it is called. Room after room after room after room of the exact thing for about 2 1/2 hours. I was starting to hope that I would get killed, so that something else would happen. But it just wouldn't stop. However, I must admit that the graphics are wonderful, and probably the best I have ever seen in a video game. Cudo's to them on that. So I really just play the multi-player thing now. The singleperson game got to boreing for me. 7/10 |

Re: Halo
I know a cheat or two.
1. How to play the first snow level with no enemies. First make sure your on co-op mode. Second fight past all the enemies until you get to the first bridge. Turn left and look down the cliff. You will see a ledge. Jump onto it with you and your partner. Go to the very middle of the ledge where it dips down. H ave one player kill himself by jumping off. Then when he dies the other person should jump but be sure to hug the side of the cliff on the way down. The player will die but your friend should respond right on a ledge below the ledge you jumped off of. Wait til you respond and have one of you stay at your current positioin while the other heads to the right. Keep walking until you see some rocks below you. Jump off and if you land just right you can take little, alot or no damage. You will now be at the bottom. Have the other player kill himself and come over to you. Then the rest of the level will have no enemies and will be very easy. This is useful but cheap for the hardest mode. 2. How to escape the big multiplayer snow level (not the one I just mentioned). First have one player enter a tank. Make him drive up the hill to the place where the ground is sort of pushed in and fits a tank in perfectly. Have him put the tanks gun down as low as it can get. Then you hop in a ghost and drive up it like a ramp. You should make it out of the level. Now all of these cheats work cause I've experienced them. You may not get them on the first try so don't give up! |

Re: Halo
I hated Half-Life also for the same reason. Bad graphics and very slow. I need something that keeps me on the edge. Perfect Dark (my fav game of all time also) is the best FPS ever. Quake 3 is next (and my 3rd fav game ever) I need something full of action that will keep me bouncing all the walls for more. As for the future of FPS, I put all my chips on Doom 3 and raise you 10.

Re: Halo
Lord Yoshi, I'd say you're just being fanboyish... as usual.
Halo possesses all the qualities you say you care about, and a heck of a lot more.

Re: Halo
Yeah, it's definetly worth it...although I'm not sure how long it will last you with all of the new PC games coming out soon...Max Payne 2 (just got the demo...it's awesome...gotta love the Havok physics)...Half-Life 2 (delayed again, dammit)...DOOM III (sweet lighting)...and a few more.
Yep, it's a shooter fan's wet dream. |

Re: Halo
Quote:
![]() It's true that it does pale in certain respects compared to the old Marathon games, particularly in terms of variety and non-combat aspects. However, I'd never been a fan of the actual combat past the first game, and in my mind it's Halo's combat that truly makes the title shine. Not a perfect tradeoff, but certainly a reasonable one. On that note, I'd venture that the two-weapon system is one of the game's strengths. It prevents hording, yet allows for liberal weapon use, so long as you're actually killing things. There are no truly superior weapons for all situations. The weapon management and grenades add incredible depth. Halo was a really solid, fulfilling experience for me. It doesn't sell itself on blind novelty, but on really strong mechanics. The best console FPS I've played in ages.

Re: Halo
Yeah, but I don't think it's possible to get 16 people on the XBox version...then again, I may be wrong. Still, though, the PC version's multiplayer is significantly better than the XBox version's from what I've read, but it's still going to be similar...I've played with 16 people on Blood Gulch...it's tons of fun, though not as good as with everyone in person, I guess. The only gripe I have is that it's a bit too hard to kill people. They take just a few too many hits before they drop.

Re: Halo
Its to easy to kill people. Not to hard. I guess he was right. I am being fanboy like normal. But it is my honest opinion. :Holds up a flag with Nintendo, Blizzard and I.D logos and wavs it around. The Rare logo now has a knife in it with blood leaking out:
Halo didnt have me rushing back for more like Perfect Dark, Doom or the classic Goldeneye. I still spend my nights playing Quake 3 online because its 50 times more thrilling then Halo. Not to mention better looking. Well thats not hard to do. Quake 2 had better graphics then Halo.

Re: Halo
Quake 2 has better graphics? Here, let's compare a few things...
(sorry about the large screenshots...56kers be warned) Halo ![]() ![]() ![]() Graphical Features:
![]() [img]http://images.gameaholic.com/screenshots/quake2/quake201.jpg[/mg] ![]() Graphical Features:
Okay, that's enough. After comparing these, how in the world can you possible say that it doesn't look better than Quake 2? Unless you're running the game at lowest detail settings and resolution, it looks much, much nicer. Even though the two games were released a matter of years apart from each other, you can't say that Halo only looks "a little" better than Quake 2. Last edited by sea; 11-19-2003 at 04:23 PM. |
