The Official Star Fox Command Thread

Based on how much we all love Nintendo here at ZU, I'm sure many of you have heard about Star Fox Command for the Nintendo DS. I first heard about it when watching live coverage of E3 (thank you, G4) and heard nothing else for a few months. I even forgot about it for a little while. But, it's August, and the game has already been released in Japan. People have frantically gotten copies of the game to see what it's like before it's been translated and shipped stateside, and I've even seen a few clips on YouTube about it.

Anyways, I was wondering how many people here are eagerly waiting for Star Fox Command to come out. I know I am. I'm mostly looking forward to trying out the new control scheme and playing online multiplayer, but not having access to the Wolfen over Wi-Fi will be a bummer. Hell, I'm getting a DS Lite just to play this game online. No, my DS can't get online. It can't even do local wireless. I dropped it. :embrsd: Anyways, let me hear what you all think of this game! I'm hoping to see you all in the skies during the next few months!

Re: The Official Star Fox Command Thread

I've played it, it rocks, I'm buying it.

3 statments that convey more truth than the bible.

Not many people know that Star Fox command is actually a remake of the never released StarFox 2 for the SNES, there is a rom of the ill fated game however, the concept is exactly the same. Stategic ship placement followed by an actuall real time battle. It's a great system, the enemies are varried, the missions are different. Overall a blast to play.

the controls may take some getting used to. See, it's quite easy to control the ship, just use the touch screen like an analog stick, but things get confusing when your looking at your radar and touching your rader simultaneously. you make think that turning left on the radar will help you better face your ship, but really, the upper screen needs you to move right, it gets difficult to translate these movements sometimes, it's not a problem however after the initial few minuts.
the bombing mechaning however is brilliant. just drag a bomb to where you want in dropped on the radar, loop and hooks work fine also.

The game also looks brilliant for a DS game I was amazed the entire duration of my play time on how great and clean the whole game looks.

SFC is a definant buy for any person obsessed or even mildly interested in star fox.

I probably could have guessed that. I actually hae a copy of the ROM and a translation patch that removes a few bugs from the game. I have run into two, though, but they were purely cosmetic. Very fun game, Star Fox 2.

From what I've seen, the ships are highly maneuvearable. From doing somre research, though, those tricks aren't used in combat all too often. They're more of a retreating maneuver because you end up losing speed from doing them. But I'm not complaining.

From what I've seen, it's a very beautiful game. It easily surpasses the graphics of Star Fox 64, which is great. I do have a few complaints about the Arwing's design, but whatever.

Is there a level higher than obsession? Because I think I'm in there.

There's no ground missions, from what I've seen. It's all air-based all-range levels. From what I've seen, it's many better than Assault. It'll probably be the next greatest DS game, and may even rival the original Star Fox.

Re: The Official Star Fox Command Thread

Famitsu gave it a 32/40, so that made me raise some doubts. I've avoided all Star Fox since Adventure, and am planning the same with this one. But vacumgod's post is encouraging. I'm definately keeping an eye on it.

Re: The Official Star Fox Command Thread

^ You do realize that a 32/40 is an 8.0, right? That's actually pretty good, and a nice step-up from the last two Star Fox games.

I'm very excited about this game, and I'll definitely be picking it up the day it comes out. I've been waiting for a completely vehicle-based Star Fox for quite a while, but also with some kind of different gameplay other than "shoot everything in your sight". The strategy element sounds like it'll be great, as if it'll add some depth to the combat. I have faith in Command, a lot of faith.

Yeah, and Famitsu tends to over rate games depending on the developer. I'm not saying it's going to be bad. Adventures wasn't that bad. It just might have to be skipped for other things.

And with how most media rate things, I usually consider 8.0 to be only border-line good. But on the other hand, you can't really put any stock in any one single review. Like I said, I'm still watching it, just in case it does deserve the pick up.

Re: The Official Star Fox Command Thread

ratings aren't always a good indicator of the truth, if it's ever possible to play the game for yourself, you ought to, I have, and the game is wonderful, it's not about senseless air shooting with glitter here and there.
The strategy side of the game is wonderful, you have to carefully plan your movements ahead of time, save your fuel, and watch our for missles(they always bite you in the ass).
I dunno, famitstu can give SFC an 8.0 if they so wish it, but I give it a 9.3, it's one of the most fun DS games coming out.

Re: The Official Star Fox Command Thread

The 1up Show had a 7 or so minute segment about Command and how it plays. I would recommend simply downloading it and seeing it for yourself here, but to sum up some of the main points:

-6 Player download play is extremely fun.
-Touch Control Works, but Analog would have definately been better. While playing, they constantly said they wished they could be using Analog sticks.
-You can record your own voice for the characters, which the game automatically distorts.
-Most of the levels are open fields (which makes sense, with how the game works), and they yearn for the classic SF type of course just a teeny bit.
-Hands tend to cramp with stylus.
-Barrel rolling works well.
-The game has a very short drawing distance, which can be frusterating.
-The timer can get on your nerves.
-A lot of times, it actually feels like good old Star Fox.

And that's just the chunk of it. It sounds interesting, but unfortunately, the release coincides with Xenosaga. It will definately be picked up by me some day though.

Re: The Official Star Fox Command Thread

If this game is a remake of Starfox 2, does that mean the two characters from that game, Mieu and Faye, are in it? I thought they looked like pretty cool characters, and it was a shame they were scrapped. I'd take a poodle or a lynx over the loathesome Slippy anyday.

No, but we get Bill and Katt, their Star Fox 64 equivalents. I know, it really is a shame. Miyu was the better of the two new characters, for sure. Well, whatever. As long as I can use a Wolfen in local multiplayer, I'm not complaining.
