Re: Game Engine Suggestions
Come on somebody must be a mod addict here! you know about that stuff !
OldBeane says- Hello. Just a quick note to say that intentional double-posting is against the rules at these forums... but since you're new, you prolly didn't notice the lil' edit button at the bottom of each post. Of course if you did notice, well now you know. Thats cool, but do it again and you will receive a warning, at which point we mods proceed to talk about you behind your back (muahaha) ![]() Thats it from me, I didn't really wanna break up your lovely conversation, so I just shoved this in here. Beane out.

Re: Game Engine Suggestions
What type of game are you attempting to produce? The Unreal, Havok, and various Quake and Halflife engine variations, all have very specific application. Even Havok, with its vast range of possibilities, comes in many forms for different purposes.
I know a lot of hobbiest game developers enjoy the use of GameMaker and the less legal RPGMaker PC versions. If you're serious about game development, you can always try writing your own engine. Or rather, you can use tutorials as a design base.

Re: Game Engine Suggestions
Unreal Tournament 2003/2004, Half-Life 2, Half-Life, Quake 3, Doom 3/Quake 4...
Most of these games are not out yet... And believe me, it's very hard to make a mod, so don't think you can do it all yourself.

Re: Game Engine Suggestions
Of course you can... But in this forum we have rules that say you cannot make such replies like you just did. Make a bit longer replies, or they count it as spam...

Further, if the popularity of Havok continues, we'll continue to have a standard development base. Already it's used in Half Life 2, Max Payne 2, and as the development base for 3D Director projects. It's also a completely different story if csbellina's intent on developing a completely independent game using an existing engine. It eliminates a lot of the concern regarding undocumented implementation in existing games, when modding. That said, it introduces its own set of problems... the obvious being having to establish one's own implementation, and expand without a structured base to work from. ![]() Anyone interested in game development should seriously give writing their own engine a shot. At the very least, it gives an appreciation for and understanding of some of the underpinnings of any other engine you ultimately decide to use. EDIT: Well, if you're just shooting for an RPG/adventure game, it'd make sense to give RPGMaker or GameMaker a shot. ![]()

Re: Game Engine Suggestions
Yes RPGMaker or GameMaker would be your best choices. If you're aiming for a 3D game, you should gather alot of people and modify an excisting engine.
This is what all current games do. Quake 4 will use the Doom 3 engine, Unreal Tournament is only one engine, altough it gets modified each time a new UT game is released. The game Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is using the Quake 3 engine. But it is heavily modified, believe me when I say that. I play this game often, and I can honestly say you would never tell (except that the console commands are the same as Quake 3) it is based on Quake 3. Judging by gameplay, of course, not the console or commands.

Re: Game Engine Suggestions
Take a look at darkbasic pro (not free, but its cheap...)
It has directx8 at its core, and uses the basic language for programming... But dont worry if you dont know any programming, since most of its functions are specific for this engine, and the basics of it are explained in the helpfiles... |
